    A Termination Detection Protocol for Use in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

    As computing devices become smaller and wireless networking technologies improve, the popularity of mobile computing continues to rise. In today\u27s business world, many consider devices such as cell phones, PDAs, and laptops as essential tools. As these and other devices become increasingly independent of the wired infrastructure, new kinds of applications that assume an ad hoc network infrastructure will need to be deployed. Such a setting poses new challenges for the software developer, e.g., the lack of an established network topology, bandwidth limitations, and frequent disconnections. In this paper, we begin to explore design strategies for developing applications over ad hoc networks. The study of termination detection in diffusing computations, along with the formulation of an algorithmic solution amenable to usage in mobile ad joc networks, gives us the opportunity to bring to light several important software engineering concerns and design strategies one might employ in a mobile setting. We view this effort as a first step towards creating a repertoire of commonly used design solutions for frequently encountered problems in the development of applications over mobile ad hoc networks

    Wireless Broadcast with Network Coding in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks: DRAGONCAST

    Network coding is a recently proposed method for transmitting data, which has been shown to have potential to improve wireless network performance. We study network coding for one specific case of multicast, broadcasting, from one source to all nodes of the network. We use network coding as a loss tolerant, energy-efficient, method for broadcast. Our emphasis is on mobile networks. Our contribution is the proposal of DRAGONCAST, a protocol to perform network coding in such a dynamically evolving environment. It is based on three building blocks: a method to permit real-time decoding of network coding, a method to adjust the network coding transmission rates, and a method for ensuring the termination of the broadcast. The performance and behavior of the method are explored experimentally by simulations; they illustrate the excellent performance of the protocol

    A quick termination detection protocol by reducing overload for mobile ad hoc networks

    An ad hoc network is characterized by the fact that there is no fixed topology due to the mobility of nodes, interference, multipath propagation and path loss. Execution of applications in such kind of networks typically consists of a number of successive phases such as network reprogramming, localization, power monitoring, and parameter updates. Termination detection of a phase is therefore a critical operation to safely execute a new phase on some or all of the network nodes. In resource constrained network environment the overhead should be minimum in order to increase throughput and minimize delay. This paper studies the existing solutions for termination detection by analyzing their effectiveness. Moreover, in this paper, we propose an efficient algorithmic solution to encounter termination detection by minimizing the network overloads
