--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In recent decades, intermodal road-rail transportation (where rail is used in
medium and long distances combined with road for the first and last leg of the
journey) has turned out to be an attractive alternative (from the point of view of
transport sustainability) to freight transport solely by road. Nevertheless, the
measures implemented in Europe by the European Commission and by the member
countries to foment railway use have not brought about the increase desired.
Railway terminals play an important role within an intermodal transport
network, being the location where freight changes mode. For this reason, the study
of how they function could be considered a key aspect in increasing the
attractiveness of railway freight transport.
In this thesis, a modular and flexible approach has been applied to design
and develop a simulation tool that can be employed by users not knowledgeable in
programming:
· To model, in a realistic and simple way, a wide variety of rail container
terminals based on information (relating to their design and operation)
introduced through an user interface.
· To predict the productivity of these terminals, their level of service and the
use of their resources and infrastructures considering a railway plan.
· To evaluate alternative configurations which allow improving the initial
functioning of the terminals depicted.
The study of a series of cases has demonstrated the utility of the approach
applied to develop the simulation tool as well as the interest of its results. This tool
could be very useful for railway infrastructure administrators and railway operators
when making strategic and tactical decisions related, for example, to the design of
new terminals or the redesign of existing terminals to satisfy new demands.
In future work, the approach applied in this thesis could be extended to the
study of other terminals which are beyond the scope of this work, such as, for
example, maritime or river terminals
A survey on container processing in railway yards: Decision problems, optimization procedures and research challenges
In spite of extraordinary support programs initiated by the European Union and other national authorities, the percentage of overall freight traffic moved by train is in steady decline. This development is driven by the fact that macro-economic benefits of rail traffic, such as relief of overloaded road networks and reduced environmental impacts, are countervailed by severe disadvantages from the perspective of the shipper, e.g., low average delivery speed and general lack of reliability. Attracting a higher share of freight traffic on rail requires a more efficient freight handling in railway yards, which includes technical innovations as well as the development of suited decision support systems. This paper reviews container processing in railway yards from an operational research perspective and analyzes basic decision problems for the two most important yard types, namely conventional rail-road and modern rail-rail transshipment yards. Existing literature is reviewed and open research challenges are identified.Railway System, Railway Yard, Container Processing, Decision Support, Survey
