    Civil aircraft advanced avionics architectures - an insight into saras avionics, present and future perspective

    Traditionally, the avionics architectures being implemented are of federated nature, which means that each avionics function has its own independent, dedicated fault-tolerant computing resources. Federated architecture has great advantage of inherent fault containment and at the same time envelops a potential risk of massive use of resources resulting in increase in weight, looming, cost and maintenance as well. With the drastic advancement in the computer and software technologies, the aviation industry is gradually moving towards the use of Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) for civil transport aircraft, potentially leading to multiple avionics functions housed in each hardware platform. Integrated Modular Avionics is the most important concept of avionics architecture for next generation aircrafts. SARAS avionics suite is purely federated with almost glass cockpit architecture complying to FAR25. The Avionics activities from the inception to execution are governed by the regulations and procedures under the review of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Every phase of avionics activity has got its own technically involvement to make the system perfect. In addition the flight data handling, monitoring and analysis is again a thrust area in the civil aviation industry leading to safety and reliability of the machine and the personnel involved. NAL has been in this area for more than two decades and continues to excel in these technologies

    Two problems were investigated: inter-equipment data transfer, both on board the aircraft and between air and ground; and crew equipment communication via the cockpit displays and controls. Inter-equipment data transfer is discussed in terms of data bus and data link requirements. Crew equipment communication is discussed regarding the availability of CRT display systems for use in research simulators to represent flat panel displays of the future, and of software controllable touch panels

    Market driven product design decisions are receiving increasing attention in the engineering design research literature. Econometric models and marketing research techniques are being integrated into engineering design in order to assist with profit maximizing product design decisions. This stream of research is referred to as "Design for Market Systems" (DMS). The existing DMS approaches fall short when the market environment is complex. The complexity can be incurred by the uncertain action-reactions of market players which impose unexpected market responses to a new design. The complexity can originate from the emergence of a niche product which creates a new product market by integrating the features of two or more existing products categories. The complexity can also arise when the designer is challenged to handle the couplings of outsourced subsystems from suppliers and explore the integration of the product with service providers. The objective of the thesis is to overcome such limitations and facilitate design decisions by modeling and interpreting the complex market environment. The research objective is achieved by three research thrusts. Thrust 1 examines the impact of action-reactions of market players on the long and short term design decisions for single category products using an agent based simulation approach. Thrust 2 concerns the design decisions for "convergence products". A convergence product physically integrates two or more existing product categories into a common product form. Convergence products make the consumer choice behavior and profit implications of design alternatives differ significantly from the situation where only a single product market is involved. Thrust 3 explores product design decisions while considering the connection to the upstream suppliers and downstream service providers. The connection is achieved by a quantitative understanding of interoperability of physical product modules as well as between a physical product and a service provider

    Application of multifunction display and control systems to the NASA Orbiter spacecraft offers the potential for reducing crew workload and improving the presentation of system status and operational data to the crew. A design concept is presented for the application of a multifunction display and control system (MFDCS) to the Orbital Maneuvering System and Electrical Power Distribution and Control System on the Orbiter spacecraft. The MFDCS would provide the capability for automation of procedures, fault prioritization and software reconfiguration of the MFDCS data base. The MFDCS would operate as a stand-alone processor to minimize the impact on the current Orbiter software. Supervisory crew command of all current functions would be retained through the use of several operating modes in the system. Both the design concept and the processes followed in defining the concept are described
