    Continuous-variable quantum neural networks

    We introduce a general method for building neural networks on quantum computers. The quantum neural network is a variational quantum circuit built in the continuous-variable (CV) architecture, which encodes quantum information in continuous degrees of freedom such as the amplitudes of the electromagnetic field. This circuit contains a layered structure of continuously parameterized gates which is universal for CV quantum computation. Affine transformations and nonlinear activation functions, two key elements in neural networks, are enacted in the quantum network using Gaussian and non-Gaussian gates, respectively. The non-Gaussian gates provide both the nonlinearity and the universality of the model. Due to the structure of the CV model, the CV quantum neural network can encode highly nonlinear transformations while remaining completely unitary. We show how a classical network can be embedded into the quantum formalism and propose quantum versions of various specialized model such as convolutional, recurrent, and residual networks. Finally, we present numerous modeling experiments built with the Strawberry Fields software library. These experiments, including a classifier for fraud detection, a network which generates Tetris images, and a hybrid classical-quantum autoencoder, demonstrate the capability and adaptability of CV quantum neural networks

    Strawberry Detection Under Various Harvestation Stages

    This paper analyzes three techniques attempting to detect strawberries at various stages in its growth cycle. Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) were implemented on a limited custom-built dataset. The methodologies were compared in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. Computational efficiency is defined in terms of image resolution as testing on a smaller dimensional image is much quicker than larger dimensions. The CNN based implementation obtained the best results with an 88% accuracy at the highest level of efficiency as well (600x800). LBP generated moderate results with a 74% detection accuracy at an inefficient rate (5000x4000). Finally, HOG’s results were inconclusive as it performed poorly early on, generating too many misclassifications

    Transfer learning for time series classification

    Transfer learning for deep neural networks is the process of first training a base network on a source dataset, and then transferring the learned features (the network's weights) to a second network to be trained on a target dataset. This idea has been shown to improve deep neural network's generalization capabilities in many computer vision tasks such as image recognition and object localization. Apart from these applications, deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have also recently gained popularity in the Time Series Classification (TSC) community. However, unlike for image recognition problems, transfer learning techniques have not yet been investigated thoroughly for the TSC task. This is surprising as the accuracy of deep learning models for TSC could potentially be improved if the model is fine-tuned from a pre-trained neural network instead of training it from scratch. In this paper, we fill this gap by investigating how to transfer deep CNNs for the TSC task. To evaluate the potential of transfer learning, we performed extensive experiments using the UCR archive which is the largest publicly available TSC benchmark containing 85 datasets. For each dataset in the archive, we pre-trained a model and then fine-tuned it on the other datasets resulting in 7140 different deep neural networks. These experiments revealed that transfer learning can improve or degrade the model's predictions depending on the dataset used for transfer. Therefore, in an effort to predict the best source dataset for a given target dataset, we propose a new method relying on Dynamic Time Warping to measure inter-datasets similarities. We describe how our method can guide the transfer to choose the best source dataset leading to an improvement in accuracy on 71 out of 85 datasets.Comment: Accepted at IEEE International Conference on Big Data 201

    Plant Disease Detection Through Convolutional Neural Networks: A Survey of Existing Literature, Best Practices, and Implementation

    In the United States alone, common diseases spread among plants account for billions of dollars lost in crop yield each year. This issue is exacerbated in countries with less infrastructure to defend against crop epidemics, and can lead to famine and forced migration. Farmers can seek the help of plant pathology experts to defend against diseases and detect crop irregularities early on. However, access to experts can be difficult, and even those trained in the field may miss symptoms before it is too late. To assist in early disease detection, a number of papers have been released on the potential for machine learning image classifiers to identify healthy plants from infected ones using convolutional neural networks. While these papers are promising, they often fail to implement a set of standardized practices in their model implementation or make use of realistic data sets. This thesis outlines a set of best practices to use when creating a convolutional neural network for plant disease detection. These principles were selected through a combination of related work analysis and generalized best practices on machine learning. A selection of 11 research articles that discuss their own plant disease image classifiers are analyzed on the grounds of these principles to assess their validity. Then, to demonstrate these principles in practice, we trained six models that each follow our set of guidelines to distinguish healthy strawberry plant images from diseased ones. While the focus of our paper centers on the need to use these practices to create field-realistic models, we achieved the best results on our strawberry image classifier using a VGG16 model architecture. We hope that this work will inspire a set of standardized practices to follow when developing a plant disease image classifier, and allow for more accurate model comparisons in the future

    L*a*b*fruits : a rapid and robust outdoor fruit detection system combining bio-inspired features with one-stage deep learning networks

    Automation of agricultural processes requires systems that can accurately detect and classify produce in real industrial environments that include variation in fruit appearance due to illumination, occlusion, seasons, weather conditions, etc. In this paper we combine a visual processing approach inspired by colour-opponent theory in humans with recent advancements in one-stage deep learning networks to accurately, rapidly and robustly detect ripe soft fruits (strawberries) in real industrial settings and using standard (RGB) camera input. The resultant system was tested on an existent data-set captured in controlled conditions as well our new real-world data-set captured on a real strawberry farm over two months. We utilise F1 score, the harmonic mean of precision and recall, to show our system matches the state-of-the-art detection accuracy ( F1 : 0.793 vs. 0.799) in controlled conditions; has greater generalisation and robustness to variation of spatial parameters (camera viewpoint) in the real-world data-set ( F1 : 0.744); and at a fraction of the computational cost allowing classification at almost 30fps. We propose that the L*a*b*Fruits system addresses some of the most pressing limitations of current fruit detection systems and is well-suited to application in areas such as yield forecasting and harvesting. Beyond the target application in agriculture this work also provides a proof-of-principle whereby increased performance is achieved through analysis of the domain data, capturing features at the input level rather than simply increasing model complexity

    SketchyGAN: Towards Diverse and Realistic Sketch to Image Synthesis

    Synthesizing realistic images from human drawn sketches is a challenging problem in computer graphics and vision. Existing approaches either need exact edge maps, or rely on retrieval of existing photographs. In this work, we propose a novel Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) approach that synthesizes plausible images from 50 categories including motorcycles, horses and couches. We demonstrate a data augmentation technique for sketches which is fully automatic, and we show that the augmented data is helpful to our task. We introduce a new network building block suitable for both the generator and discriminator which improves the information flow by injecting the input image at multiple scales. Compared to state-of-the-art image translation methods, our approach generates more realistic images and achieves significantly higher Inception Scores.Comment: Accepted to CVPR 201

    Viewpoint Optimization for Autonomous Strawberry Harvesting with Deep Reinforcement Learning

    Autonomous harvesting may provide a viable solution to mounting labor pressures in the United States\u27 strawberry industry. However, due to bottlenecks in machine perception and economic viability, a profitable and commercially adopted strawberry harvesting system remains elusive. In this research, we explore the feasibility of using deep reinforcement learning to overcome these bottlenecks and develop a practical algorithm to address the sub-objective of viewpoint optimization, or the development of a control policy to direct a camera to favorable vantage points for autonomous harvesting. We evaluate the algorithm\u27s performance in a custom, open-source simulated environment and observe affirmative results. Our trained agent yields 8.7 times higher returns than random actions and 8.8 percent faster exploration than our best baseline policy, which uses visual servoing. Visual investigation shows the agent is able to fixate on favorable viewpoints, despite having no explicit means to propagate information through time. Overall, we conclude that deep reinforcement learning is a promising area of research to advance the state of the art in autonomous strawberry harvesting

    Effectiveness of Deep Feature Extraction Algorithm in Determining the Maturity of Fruits: A Review

    Intelligent farming technology helps farmers overcome tough obstacles in the farming process, such as increased sup-plier costs, a lack of labour, customer satisfaction, and more. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a remarkable technology in smart farming because it deeply understands the issue and can help farmers make decisions. This article's main objective is to identify and examine the concepts and techniques of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) technology that could aid in classifying the ripeness stages of fruit in intelligent farming. This paper systematically reviews 18 previous works for classifying the ripeness stages of fruit. This review outlines the most commonly used algorithms, activation functions, optimisation functions, and platforms for algorithm implementation. In addition, found that not all algorithms are suitable for even near-equivalent processes. Therefore, this study suggests the intensity of the CNN algorithms concerning various metrics to find the suitability for the operations/applications. Finally, this paper offers some future research directions in the ripeness classification of fruits
