Will SDN be part of 5G?
For many, this is no longer a valid question and the case is considered
settled with SDN/NFV (Software Defined Networking/Network Function
Virtualization) providing the inevitable innovation enablers solving many
outstanding management issues regarding 5G. However, given the monumental task
of softwarization of radio access network (RAN) while 5G is just around the
corner and some companies have started unveiling their 5G equipment already,
the concern is very realistic that we may only see some point solutions
involving SDN technology instead of a fully SDN-enabled RAN. This survey paper
identifies all important obstacles in the way and looks at the state of the art
of the relevant solutions. This survey is different from the previous surveys
on SDN-based RAN as it focuses on the salient problems and discusses solutions
proposed within and outside SDN literature. Our main focus is on fronthaul,
backward compatibility, supposedly disruptive nature of SDN deployment,
business cases and monetization of SDN related upgrades, latency of general
purpose processors (GPP), and additional security vulnerabilities,
softwarization brings along to the RAN. We have also provided a summary of the
architectural developments in SDN-based RAN landscape as not all work can be
covered under the focused issues. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on
the state of the art of SDN-based RAN and clearly points out the gaps in the

Design and evaluation of dynamic policy-based flow redirection for multihomed mobile netwotks
This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a solution for dynamic redirection of traffic flows for multihomed mobile networks. The solution was developed for a mobile user that disposes of a Personal Area Network (PAN) with a Personal Mobile Router (PMR), in order to achieve Always Best Connected(ABC) service by distributing flows belonging to different applications among the most appropriate access networks. Designed in a modular way for a NEMO based mobility and multihoming support, the proposed flow redirection solution can be easily coupled with and controlled by dynamic traffic policies that come from advanced network intelligence, according to the currently available network resources and user and application requirements. A prototype implementation was validated and assessed on a testbed as proof-of-concept
Design of an intelligent waterway ambient infrastructure based on Multiagent Systems and Wireless Sensor Networks
Lately Maritime research areas have moved their interests from traditional ship studies and traffic systems to new areas that confer a more general character to them as, for example, environmental monitoring. BOYAS project is proposed including these new perspectives as well as more classical ones. Trying to get this integral character for the waterway ambient and its activities management, the confluence between two recent research areas is studied. Intelligent Multi-Modal Sensing-Communication Integration: Synesthesia of Machines
In the era of sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications, integrated
sensing and communications (ISAC) is recognized as a promising solution to
upgrade the physical system by endowing wireless communications with sensing
capability. Existing ISAC is mainly oriented to static scenarios with
radio-frequency (RF) sensors being the primary participants, thus lacking a
comprehensive environment feature characterization and facing a severe
performance bottleneck in dynamic environments. To date, extensive surveys on
ISAC have been conducted but are limited to summarizing RF-based radar sensing.
Currently, some research efforts have been devoted to exploring multi-modal
sensing-communication integration but still lack a comprehensive review.
Therefore, we generalize the concept of ISAC inspired by human synesthesia to
establish a unified framework of intelligent multi-modal sensing-communication
integration and provide a comprehensive review under such a framework in this
paper. The so-termed Synesthesia of Machines (SoM) gives the clearest cognition
of such intelligent integration and details its paradigm for the first time. We
commence by justifying the necessity of the new paradigm. Subsequently, we
offer a definition of SoM and zoom into the detailed paradigm, which is
summarized as three operation modes. To facilitate SoM research, we overview
the prerequisite of SoM research, i.e., mixed multi-modal (MMM) datasets. Then,
we introduce the mapping relationships between multi-modal sensing and
communications. Afterward, we cover the technological review on
SoM-enhance-based and SoM-concert-based applications. To corroborate the
superiority of SoM, we also present simulation results related to dual-function
waveform and predictive beamforming design. Finally, we propose some potential

Insights from computational modelling and simulation towards promoting public health among African countries
One of the problems associated with some African countries is the increasing trend of
road mortality as a result of road fatalities. This has been a major concern. The negative
impacts of these on public health cannot be underestimated. An issue of concern is the
high record of casualties being recorded on an annual basis as a result of over-speeding,
overtaking at dangerous bends, alcohol influence and non-chalant attitude of drivers to
driving. The aim of this research is to explore and adapt the knowledge of finite state
algorithm, modeling and simulation to design and implement a novel prototype of an
advanced traffic light system towards promoting public health among African countries.
Here, we specify and built a model of an advanced wireless traffic control system, which
will help complement existing traffic control systems among African countries. This
prototype is named Advanced Wireless Traffic Control System (WPDTCS). We developed
this model using an event-driven programming approach. The technical details of the
model were based on knowledge adapted from the Finite State Automation Transition
algorithm. It is expected that the AWTCS will promote the evolution of teaching in
modeling, simulation, public safety by offering trainees an advanced pedagogical
product. It will also permit to strengthen the collaboration of knowledge from the fields
of Computer Science, Public health, and Electrical Engineering.
