A normative approach to multi-agent systems for intelligent buildings
Building Management Systems (BMS) are widely adopted in modern buildings around the world in order to
provide high-quality building services, and reduce the running cost of the building. However, most BMS are
functionality-oriented and do not consider user personalization. The aim of this research is to capture and
represent building management rules using organizational semiotics methods. We implement Semantic
Analysis, which determines semantic units in building management and their relationship patterns of
behaviour, and Norm Analysis, which extracts and specifies the norms that establish how and when these
management actions occur. Finally, we propose a multi-agent framework for norm based building
management. This framework contributes to the design domain of intelligent building management system
by defining a set of behaviour patterns, and the norms that govern the real-time behaviour in a building

Knowledge-based clinical pathway for medical quality improvement
Clinical pathways have been adopted for various diseases in clinical departments for quality improvement as a result of standardization of medical activities in treatment process. Using knowledge-based decision support on the basis
of clinical pathways is a promising strategy to improve
medical quality effectively. However, the clinical pathway
knowledge has not been fully integrated into treatment process and thus cannot provide comprehensive support to the actual work practice. Therefore this paper proposes a knowledgebased clinical pathway management method which contributes to make use of clinical knowledge to support and
optimize medical practice. We have developed a knowledgebased clinical pathway management system to demonstrate how the clinical pathway knowledge comprehensively supports the treatment process. The experiences from the use of this system show that the treatment quality can be effectively improved by the extracted and classified clinical pathway knowledge, seamless integration of patient-specific clinical
pathway recommendations with medical tasks and the

Understanding behaviour patterns of multi-agents in digital business ecosystems: an organisational semiotics inspired framework
Digital business ecosystem (DBE) is a collaborative network of organisations, processes and technologies that collectively create value. Thus, value creation in DBEs is jointly undertaken by multiple human and digital agents. To aid appropriate apportionment of work and design of information systems, it is essential to understand behaviour of both human and digital agents. However limited attention has been paid to agents’ behaviour in the extant DBEs literature. Moreover, multi-agent research has also largely focused on technical issues while limited research exists on agents’ behaviour. As such, in this paper, we develop a framework to understand behaviour patterns of multi-agent in DBEs. This framework builds its foundation on the theoretical lens of Organisational Semiotics, a sociotechnical theory towards contribution to DBE research
An integrative semiotic methodology for IS research
Semiotics studies the production, transmission and interpretation of meaning represented symbolically in signs and messages, primarily but not exclusively in language. For information systems (IS) the domain of semiosis consists of human and non-human interactions based on technologically-mediated communication in the social, material and personal worlds. The paper argues that semiosis has immense bearing on processes of communication central to the advanced information and communications technologies studied by IS scholars. Its use separately, or in mixed methods approaches, enriches areas of central concern to the IS field, and is particularly apt when researching internet-based development and applications, for example virtual worlds and social media. This paper presents a four step structured methodology, informed by a central theoretical semiotic framework to provide practical guidelines for operationalizing semiotics in IS research. Thus, using illustrative examples, the paper provides a step-by-step semiotics approach to research based on distinctive semiotic concepts and their relationships – producer, consumer, medium, code, message and content – and how, at an integrating level, the personal, social and material worlds relate through sociation, embodiment and socio-materiality

A semiotic multi-agent modeling approach for clinical pathway management
Clinical pathway (CP) is the standard way to manage medical activities in order to improve the efficiency and minimize the cost of healthcare service. However current application of CPs can hardly adapt to the dynamic and complex clinical processes which involve the coordination of social agents in hospital. This paper focuses on developing a multi-agent modeling method to build up the system that can increase the execution efficiency of clinical pathway. In particular, we present a semiotic approach to analyze the requirement of clinical pathway. Furthermore we describe how the EDA (Epistemic, Deontic, and Axiological) agent and the negotiation model are realized and applied to support the clinical pathway management. Finally, the clinical pathway of breast cancer is presented to demonstrate our methods
