The Role of Document Embedding in Research Paper Recommender Systems: To Breakdown or to Bolster Disciplinary Borders?

In the extensive recommender systems literature, novelty and diversity have been identified as key properties of useful recommendations. However, these properties have received limited attention in the specific sub-field of research paper recommender systems. In this work, we argue for the importance of offering novel and diverse research paper recommendations to scientists. This approach aims to reduce siloed reading, break down filter bubbles, and promote interdisciplinary research. We propose a novel framework for evaluating the novelty and diversity of research paper recommendations that leverages methods from network analysis and natural language processing. Using this framework, we show that the choice of representational method within a larger research paper recommendation system can have a measurable impact on the nature of downstream recommendations, specifically on their novelty and diversity. We introduce a novel paper embedding method, which we demonstrate offers more innovative and diverse recommendations without sacrificing precision, compared to other state-of-the-art baselines.Comment: Under Review at Scientometric

Recommendation agents have been used to assist consumers in online purchase for almost 20 years. Their use has been studied in academic research with two different approaches. The first one addresses computational problems related to generating accurate recommendations. The other seeks to understand how user interaction with recommendation agents can alter behaviors in online shopping. Through bibliometric and scientometric methods, this study looked for the most influential papers, authors and journals in the field of behavioral recommendation research. In the present work, only articles investigating behavioral aspects of recommendation usage were considered. The identified articles were analyzed in terms of their methodology, variables and repercussion. At the end, a total of 175 articles published in journals from many different fields of academic research were found, attesting the multidisciplinary nature of this topic. Most of the studies were empirical investigations using experimental methodology, however theoretical papers showed to be more influential. It was possible to identify 29 different dependent variables used to measure the effects of recommendations in online assisted purchase. The 19 independent variables used in these studies were related to characteristics of the recommendation agent, user characteristics or vendor characteristics. Results also showed that the field still lacks confirmatory studies capable of creating a greater assurance for the knowledge already developed in the field.um período de cerca de 20 anos.

This study focus on the growth and development of drone technology research in forms of publications reflected in Web of Science database, during the span of 1998-2017. A total 3433 publications were found and the highest 1040 (30.29%) publications published in 2017. The average number of 343.3 publications were published per year in the study field and there was a variation in Annual Growth, because there is no constant growth of publications every year in the area of study. Out of total publications, 3123 (90.97%) contributed by collaboration of multiple authors and 310 (9.03%) by single authors. Authors from United States of America (USA) published the highest number of publications with a total of 774 (22.55%), followed by China and South Korea with 618 (18.00%) and 238 (6.93%) publications were produced respectively. It exposed that the most prolific author is Kim Y secured first place by contributing 31 (0.90%) publications, followed by Zarco 21(0.61%), and Zhang 17 (0.50%) publications were published in drone technology. The collaborative index range from 3.43 (2008) to 4.19 (2012) with an average of 3.88 and 3.79 (2013) to 4.45 (2017) with an average of 4.16 per joint authored paper. For a total of 3123 multiple authored publications has 4.13 of an average per joint authors. It implies the research team falls between 3 and 4 authorship pattern in field of drone technology. It is identified the domination of Chinese institutions by contributing 23.77% (816) of a total research output in drone technology. In respect to, 7.31% (251) form Chines Academy of Science, 6.26% (215) from Beihang University, 5.33% (183) from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics

This study presents a method to analyze textual data and applying it to the field of Library and Information Science. This paper subsumes a special case of Latent Dirichlet Allocation and Author-Topic models where each article has one unique author and each author has one unique topic. Topic Modeling Toolkit is used to perform the author-topic modeling. The study further which considers topics and their changes over time by taking into account both the word co-occurrence pattern and time. 393 full-text articles were downloaded from DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology and were analyzed accordingly. 16 core topics have been identified throughout the period of ten years. These core topics can be considered as the core area of research in the journal from 2008 to 2017. This paper further identifies top five authors associated with the representative articles for each studied year. These authors can be treated as the subject-experts for the modeled topics as indicated. The results of the study can serve as a platform to determine the research trend; core areas of research; and the subject-experts related to those core areas in the field the Library and Information Science in India

Reducing semantic complexity in distributed Digital Libraries: treatment of term vagueness and document re-ranking

    Get PDF
The purpose of the paper is to propose models to reduce the semantic complexity in heterogeneous DLs. The aim is to introduce value-added services (treatment of term vagueness and document re-ranking) that gain a certain quality in DLs if they are combined with heterogeneity components established in the project "Competence Center Modeling and Treatment of Semantic Heterogeneity". Empirical observations show that freely formulated user terms and terms from controlled vocabularies are often not the same or match just by coincidence. Therefore, a value-added service will be developed which rephrases the natural language searcher terms into suggestions from the controlled vocabulary, the Search Term Recommender (STR). Two methods, which are derived from scientometrics and network analysis, will be implemented with the objective to re-rank result sets by the following structural properties: the ranking of the results by core journals (so-called Bradfordizing) and ranking by centrality of authors in co-authorship networks.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
