Automatic face alignment by maximizing similarity score
Accurate face registration is of vital importance to the performance of a face recognition algorithm. We propose a face registration method which searches for the optimal alignment by maximizing the score of a face recognition algorithm. In this paper we investigate the practical usability of our face registration method. Experiments show that our registration method achieves better results in face verification than the landmark based registration method. We even obtain face verification results which are similar to results obtained using landmark based registration with manually located eyes, nose and mouth as landmarks. The performance of the method is tested on the FRGCv1 database using images taken under both controlled and uncontrolled conditions

Hand2Face: Automatic Synthesis and Recognition of Hand Over Face Occlusions
A person's face discloses important information about their affective state.
Although there has been extensive research on recognition of facial
expressions, the performance of existing approaches is challenged by facial
occlusions. Facial occlusions are often treated as noise and discarded in
recognition of affective states. However, hand over face occlusions can provide
additional information for recognition of some affective states such as
curiosity, frustration and boredom. One of the reasons that this problem has
not gained attention is the lack of naturalistic occluded faces that contain
hand over face occlusions as well as other types of occlusions. Traditional
approaches for obtaining affective data are time demanding and expensive, which
limits researchers in affective computing to work on small datasets. This
limitation affects the generalizability of models and deprives researchers from
taking advantage of recent advances in deep learning that have shown great
success in many fields but require large volumes of data. In this paper, we
first introduce a novel framework for synthesizing naturalistic facial
occlusions from an initial dataset of non-occluded faces and separate images of
hands, reducing the costly process of data collection and annotation. We then
propose a model for facial occlusion type recognition to differentiate between
hand over face occlusions and other types of occlusions such as scarves, hair,
glasses and objects. Finally, we present a model to localize hand over face
occlusions and identify the occluded regions of the face.Comment: Accepted to International Conference on Affective Computing and

3-D Face Analysis and Identification Based on Statistical Shape Modelling
This paper presents an effective method of statistical shape representation for automatic face analysis and identification in 3-D. The method combines statistical shape modelling techniques and the non-rigid deformation matching scheme. This work is distinguished by three key contributions. The first is the introduction of a new 3-D shape registration method using hierarchical landmark detection and multilevel B-spline warping technique, which allows accurate dense correspondence search for statistical model construction. The second is the shape representation approach, based on Laplacian Eigenmap, which provides a nonlinear submanifold that links underlying structure of facial data. The third contribution is a hybrid method for matching the statistical model and test dataset which controls the levels of the model’s deformation at different matching stages and so increases chance of the successful matching. The proposed method is tested on the public database, BU-3DFE. Results indicate that it can achieve extremely high verification rates in a series of tests, thus providing real-world practicality
