    Efficient Opportunistic Sensing using Mobile Collaborative Platform MOSDEN

    Mobile devices are rapidly becoming the primary computing device in people's lives. Application delivery platforms like Google Play, Apple App Store have transformed mobile phones into intelligent computing devices by the means of applications that can be downloaded and installed instantly. Many of these applications take advantage of the plethora of sensors installed on the mobile device to deliver enhanced user experience. The sensors on the smartphone provide the opportunity to develop innovative mobile opportunistic sensing applications in many sectors including healthcare, environmental monitoring and transportation. In this paper, we present a collaborative mobile sensing framework namely Mobile Sensor Data EngiNe (MOSDEN) that can operate on smartphones capturing and sharing sensed data between multiple distributed applications and users. MOSDEN follows a component-based design philosophy promoting reuse for easy and quick opportunistic sensing application deployments. MOSDEN separates the application-specific processing from the sensing, storing and sharing. MOSDEN is scalable and requires minimal development effort from the application developer. We have implemented our framework on Android-based mobile platforms and evaluate its performance to validate the feasibility and efficiency of MOSDEN to operate collaboratively in mobile opportunistic sensing applications.     Combining Mobile Crowdsensing and Ecological Momentary Assessments in the Healthcare Domain

    The increasing prevalence of smart mobile devices (e.g., smartphones) enables the combined use of mobile crowdsensing (MCS) and ecological momentary assessments (EMA) in the healthcare domain. By correlating qualitative longitudinal and ecologically valid EMA assessment data sets with sensor measurements in mobile apps, new valuable insights about patients (e.g., humans who suffer from chronic diseases) can be gained. However, there are numerous conceptual, architectural and technical, as well as legal challenges when implementing a respective software solution. Therefore, the work at hand (1) identifies these challenges, (2) derives respective recommendations, and (3) proposes a reference architecture for a MCS-EMA-platform addressing the defined recommendations. The required insights to propose the reference architecture were gained in several large-scale mHealth crowdsensing studies running for many years and different healthcare questions. To mention only two examples, we are running crowdsensing studies on questions for the tinnitus chronic disorder or psychological stress. We consider the proposed reference architecture and the identified challenges and recommendations as a contribution in two respects. First, they enable other researchers to align our practical studies with a baseline setting that can satisfy the variously revealed insights. Second, they are a proper basis to better compare data that was gathered using MCS and EMA. In addition, the combined use of MCS and EMA increasingly requires suitable architectures and associated digital solutions for the healthcare domain

    Efficient Processing of Geospatial mHealth Data Using a Scalable Crowdsensing Platform

    Smart sensors and smartphones are becoming increasingly prevalent. Both can be used to gather environmental data (e.g., noise). Importantly, these devices can be connected to each other as well as to the Internet to collect large amounts of sensor data, which leads to many new opportunities. In particular, mobile crowdsensing techniques can be used to capture phenomena of common interest. Especially valuable insights can be gained if the collected data are additionally related to the time and place of the measurements. However, many technical solutions still use monolithic backends that are not capable of processing crowdsensing data in a flexible, efficient, and scalable manner. In this work, an architectural design was conceived with the goal to manage geospatial data in challenging crowdsensing healthcare scenarios. It will be shown how the proposed approach can be used to provide users with an interactive map of environmental noise, allowing tinnitus patients and other health-conscious people to avoid locations with harmful sound levels. Technically, the shown approach combines cloud-native applications with Big Data and stream processing concepts. In general, the presented architectural design shall serve as a foundation to implement practical and scalable crowdsensing platforms for various healthcare scenarios beyond the addressed use case

This statement is particularly true when considering human activity traces, which tend to be highly unpredictable. In this paper, we therefore introduce APISENSE, a distributed crowdsensing platform for collecting realistic activity traces. In particular, APISENSE provides to scientists a participative platform to help them to easily deploy their sensing experiments in the wild. Beyond the scientific contributions of this platform, the technical originality of APISENSE lies in its Cloud orientation and the dynamic deployment of scripts within the mobile devices of the participants.We validate this platform by reporting on various crowdsensing experiments we deployed using Android smartphones and comparing our solution to existing crowdsensing platforms

    MOSDEN: A Scalable Mobile Collaborative Platform for Opportunistic Sensing Applications

    Mobile smartphones along with embedded sensors have become an efficient enabler for various mobile applications including opportunistic sensing. The hi-tech advances in smartphones are opening up a world of possibilities. This paper proposes a mobile collaborative platform called MOSDEN that enables and supports opportunistic sensing at run time. MOSDEN captures and shares sensor data across multiple apps, smartphones and users. MOSDEN supports the emerging trend of separating sensors from application-specific processing, storing and sharing. MOSDEN promotes reuse and re-purposing of sensor data hence reducing the efforts in developing novel opportunistic sensing applications. MOSDEN has been implemented on Android-based smartphones and tablets. Experimental evaluations validate the scalability and energy efficiency of MOSDEN and its suitability towards real world applications.     Design and Implementation of a Scalable Crowdsensing Platform for Geospatial Data of Tinnitus Patients

    Smart devices and low-powered sensors are becoming increasingly ubiquitous and nowadays almost all of these devices are connected, which is a promising foundation for crowdsensing of data related to various environmental phenomena. Resulting data is especially meaningful when it is related to time and location. Interestingly, many existing approaches built their solution on monolithic backends that process data on a per-request basis. However, for many scenarios, such technical setting is not suitable for managing data requests of a large crowd. For example, when dealing with millions of data points, still many challenges arise for modern smartphones if calculations or advanced visualization features must be accomplished directly on the smartphone. Therefore, the work at hand proposes an architectural design for managing geospatial data of tinnitus patients, which combines a cloudnative approach with Big Data concepts used in the Internet of Things. The presented architectural design shall serve as a generic foundation to implement (1) a scalable backend for a platform that covers the aforementioned crowdsensing requirements as well as to provide (2) a sophisticated stream processing concept to calculate and pre-aggregate incoming measurement data of tinnitus patients. Following this, this paper presents a visualization feature to provide users with a comprehensive overview of noise levels in their environment based on noise measurements. This shall help tinnitus or hearing-impaired patients to avoid locations with a burdensome sound level
