Piloting Service Oriented Architecture—A Case Study in the Oil Industry

The Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm introduced a few years back has already become the driving force behind enterprise systems. It is also a force behind most cutting edge technologies today. Although much is written about SOA, empirical studies on its implementation are next to none. This exploratory case study examines a pilot implementation at an oil-drilling equipment manufacturing company to understand the process and issues involved in SOA adoption. The study depicts the implementation methodology and the roadmap adopted by this organization to help connect its disparate systems using enterprise SOA. This paper can help researcher better understand SOA implementation and help them further explore the managerial issues involved in implementing this new technology

VORGEHENSMODELLE ZUR ENTWICKLUNG SERVICEORIENTIERTER SOFTWARESYSTEME

Bei der Entwicklung von Softwaresystemen auf Basis eines serviceorientierten Architekturparadigmas stellt sich die Frage, welches Vorgehensmodell zur Projektabwicklung herangezogen werden kann. In der Literatur werden unterschiedliche Vorgehensmodelle zur serviceorientierten Softwareentwicklung vorgeschlagen. Aus diesen werden 17 Modelle ausgewählt, charakterisiert sowie mit Hilfe eines allgemeinen Rahmens klassifiziert und verglichen. Dabei werden sowohl generelle Merkmale von Vorgehensmodellen als auch SOA-spezifische Vorgehensmerkmale herangezogen

A Procedure Model for Integrating Retailers into Digital Platforms

The integration into digital platforms is a vital countermeasure for retailers to counter rising customer expectations, emerging competition, and rapid technological developments. To break down the behemoth of integration projects into smaller steps, we synthesized a procedure model incorporating requirements from scientific literature and practice. We applied design science research to derive a well-structured and scientifically sound artifact that was evaluated in eleven interviews with practitioners. Our analysis revealed that integrating retailers into digital platforms can be standardized for different types and depths following specific guidelines outlined in the proposed procedure model of this work. Furthermore, the integration shows many similarities to other domains, especially when considering small- and medium-sized organisations. However, there are some peculiarities for retailers that could rationalize a distinct view on the integration

Konzeption für die Gestaltung von Manufacturing Execution Systems in serviceorientierten Architekturen

During globalization companies today are strongly under competitive pressure. It is necessary, that they are able to adapt to fast changing market situations. There are many possible solutions for this problem.For example Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) should locate unknown opti-mization potentials and improve the value chain. These goals can be achieved by improving the processes and the process capability of the company.The required adaptability has to be provided by companies IT systems. The characteristics and the architecture goals of service oriented architectures (SOA) should deliver this flexibility. The SOA provides business functions as loose coupled software services. Thus business process changes should be implemented fast and easy.The benefits of both concepts are similar, but until now there is no analysis about the ability of SOA to implement an MES. In this diploma thesis I made this analysis. Thereby I created especially the business view of the software architecture considering the special requirements of MES.At the beginning I educed the SOA architecture goals from these requirements. Using these goals I compared existing service oriented design methods. After this I combined useful approaches to a new design method. Using these method I realized an exemplarily service architecture of a MES. The ability of SOA to implement an MES could be proved with the design method and the realized service architecture.These prove based on the educed architecture goals. The characteristics and the architecture goals of SOA are especially qualified to realize the special requirements of an MES.Durch die Globalisierung sehen sich die Unternehmen zunehmend einem stärker werdenden Wettbewerbsdruck ausgesetzt. Zusätzlich müssen sie sich an immer schneller ändernde Marktsituationen anpassen. In diesem Zusammenhang wurden verschiedene Konzepte zu Verbesserung der Konkurrenzfähigkeit entwickelt. Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) sollen beispielsweise auf Ebene des Pro-duktionsmanagements versteckte Optimierungspotentiale finden und die Wertschöpfung dadurch dauerhaft erhöhen. Dieses Ziel soll durch die Verbesserung der Prozesse und der Prozessfähigkeit des Unternehmens erreicht werden. Die von den Unternehmen geforderte Anpassungsfähigkeit muss in hohem Maße durch die IT-Systeme unterstützt werden. Die Eigenschaften und Architekturziele einer serviceorientierten Architektur (SOA) versprechen genau diese Flexibilität. Durch die Bereitstellung von fachlichen Funktionen durch lose gekoppelte Softwareservices sollen Änderungen der Geschäftsprozesse schnell und einfach realisiert werden. Obwohl sich die versprochenen Vorteile beider Konzepte ähneln, wurde bisher noch nicht untersucht, ob sich die Umsetzung eines MES auf Basis einer SOA anbietet. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Diplomarbeit wurde diese Untersuchung durchgeführt. Dabei wurde im Besonderen der fachliche Entwurf der Softwarearchitektur unter Berücksichtigung der speziellen Anforderungen eines MES umgesetzt. Aus diesen Anforderungen wurden zunächst relevante SOA-Architekturziele abgeleitet. Auf dieser Grundlage wurden existierende serviceorientierte Entwurfsmethoden miteinander verglichen. Die zur Erfüllung der Anforderungen geeigneten Ansätze wurden anschließend zu einer neuen Entwurfsmethode kombiniert. Unter Verwendung dieser Methode wurde schließlich ein exemplarischer fachlicher Serviceentwurf eines MES erstellt. Die besondere Eignung einer SOA zur Umsetzung eines MES wurde an der Entwurfsmethode und an der fertigen Servicearchitektur nachgewiesen. Der Beweis wurde auf Basis der abgeleiteten Architekturziele erbracht. Diese Ziele wurden durch die Entwurfsmethode nachweislich umgesetzt.
