A Network Algorithm for 3D/2D IPTV Distribution using WiMAX and WLAN Technologies
The final publication is available at link.springer.comThe appearance of new broadband wireless technologies jointly with the ability to offer enough quality of service to provide IPTV over them, have made possible the mobility and ubiquity of any type of device to access the IPTV network. The minimum bandwidth required in the access network to provide appropriate quality 3D/2D IPTV services jointly with the need to guarantee the Quality of Experience (QoE) to the end user, makes the need of algorithms that should be able to combine different wireless standards and technologies. In this paper, we propose a network algorithm that manages the IPTV access network and decides which type of wireless technology the customers should connect with when using multiband devices, depending on the requirements of the IPTV client device, the available networks, and some network parameters (such as the number of loss packets and packet delay), to provide the maximum QoE to the customer. The measurements taken in a real environment from several wireless networks allow us to know the performance of the proposed system when it selects each one of them. The measurements taken from a test bench demonstrate the success of our system. This work has been partially supported by the Polytechnic University of Valencia, though the PAID-15-10 multidisciplinary projects, by the Instituto de Telecomunicacoes, Next Generation Networks and Applications Group (NetGNA), Portugal, and by National Funding from the FCT - Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia through the PEst-OE/EEI/LA0008/2011 Project.Lloret, J.; CĂĄnovas Solbes, A.; Rodrigues, JJPC.; Lin, K. Implementation and Performance Evaluation of an NGN prototype using WiMax as an Access Technology
Telecommunications networks have evolved to IP-based networks, commonly known as Next Generation Networks (NGN). The biggest challenge in providing high quality realtime multimedia applications is achieving a Quality of Service (QoS) consistent with user expectations. One of the key additional factors affecting QoS is the existence of different QoS mechanisms on the heterogeneous technologies used on NGN platforms. This research investigates the techniques used to achieve consistent QoS on network technologies that use different QoS techniques. Numerous proposals for solving the end-to-end QoS problem in IP networks have adopted policy-based management, use of signalling protocols for communicating applications QoS requirements across different Network Elements and QoS provisioning in Network Elements. Such solutions are dependent on the use of traffic classification and knowledge of the QoS requirements of applications and services on the networks. This research identifies the practical difficulties involved in meeting the QoS requirements of network traffic between WiMax and an IP core network. In the work, a solution based on the concept of class-of-service mapping is proposed. In the proposed solution, QoS is implemented on the two networks and the concept of class-of-service mapping is used to integrate the two QoS systems. This essentially provides consistent QoS to applications as they traverse the two network domains and hence meet end-user QoS expectations. The work is evaluated through a NGN prototype to determine the capabilities of the networks to deliver real-time media that meets user expectations
A Review on Provisioning Quality of Service of Wireless Telemedicine for E-Health Services
In general, on-line medical consultation reduces time required for medical consultation induces
improvement in the quality and efficiency of healthcare services. All major types of current e-health applications such as ECG, X-ray, video, diagnosis images and other common applications have been included in the scope of the study. In addition, the provision of Quality of Service (QoS) for the application of specific healthcare services in e-health, the scheme of priority for e-health services and the support of QoS in wireless networks and techniques or methods for IEEE 802.11 to guarantee the provision of QoS has also been assessed.
In e-health, medical services in remote locations such as rural healthcare centers, ambulances, ships as well as
home healthcare services can be supported through the applications of e-health services such as medical
databases, electronic health records and the routing of text, audio, video and images. Given this, an adaptive
resource allocation for a wireless network with multiple service types and multiple priorities have been
proposed. For the provision of an acceptable QoS level to users of e-health services, prioritization is an
important criterion in a multi-traffic network. The requirement for QoS provisioning in wireless broadband
medical networks have paved the pathway for bandwidth requirements and the real-time or live transmission
of medical applications. From the study, good performance of the proposed scheme has been validated by the
results obtained. The proposed wireless network is capable of handling medical applications for both normal
and life-threatening conditions as characterized by the level of emergencies. In addition, the bandwidth
allocation and admission control algorithm for IEEE 802.16- based design specifically for wireless
telemedicine/e-health services have also been presented in the study. It has been concluded that under busy
traffic conditions, the proposed architecture can used as a feasible and reliable infrastructure network for
telemedicine
Quality of Experience and Adaptation Techniques for Multimedia Communications
The widespread use of multimedia services on the World Wide Web and the advances
in end-user portable devices have recently increased the user demands for better quality.
Moreover, providing these services seamlessly and ubiquitously on wireless networks and
with user mobility poses hard challenges. To meet these challenges and fulfill the end-user
requirements, suitable strategies need to be adopted at both application level and network
level. At the application level rate and quality have to be adapted to time-varying bandwidth
limitations, whereas on the network side a mechanism for efficient use of the network
resources has to be implemented, to provide a better end-user Quality of Experience (QoE)
through better Quality of Service (QoS). The work in this thesis addresses these issues by
first investigating multi-stream rate adaptation techniques for Scalable Video Coding (SVC)
applications aimed at a fair provision of QoE to end-users. Rate Distortion (R-D) models
for real-time and non real-time video streaming have been proposed and a rate adaptation
technique is also developed to minimize with fairness the distortion of multiple videos
with difference complexities. To provide resiliency against errors, the effect of Unequal
Error protection (UXP) based on Reed Solomon (RS) encoding with erasure correction has
been also included in the proposed R-D modelling. Moreover, to improve the support of
QoE at the network level for multimedia applications sensitive to delays, jitters and packet
drops, a technique to prioritise different traffic flows using specific QoS classes within an
intermediate DiffServ network integrated with a WiMAX access system is investigated.
Simulations were performed to test the network under different congestion scenarios

Performance evaluation of information and communications technology infrastructure for smart distribution network applications
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Current electrical networks require secure, scalable and cost-effective Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) solutions to facilitate the novel functionalities
required by Smart Grids. Countries around the globe are investigating alternative energy sources to mitigate the current energy crisis and environmental issues experienced by many countries due to global warming, rapid growth of population, inefficient energy management, dwindling fossil fuel resources, etc. Therefore, alternative or renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, hydro, combined heat and power, etc., are required to mitigate such a crisis and such sources will also need to be integrated in to the power grid
in a distributed manner. Such distributed energy sources are mainly connected to the
distribution networks and introduce huge challenges to the distribution network operator (DNO). Many of these challenges cannot be dealt with effectively using existing network operation mechanisms therefore the research and development of novel ICT solutions to support smart distribution network operation is required.
This research investigated suitable ICT solutions to enable the Smart Grid to tackle these challenges and proposes ICT infrastructure models that can be used for simulation studies in order to investigate cost-effective, scalable and secure solutions for the DNOs. Initially, a Quality of Service (QoS) monitoring test-bed was proposed to evaluate the performance of bandwidth intensive applications, such as smart meter data transmission. Simulation studies for different communication technologies, cellular and Power Line
Communication (PLC), were also carried out and the simulation models were verified
using experimental test results. Finally, the modelling and analysis of smart metering
infrastructure was carried out using simulation and extensive studies were performed to evaluate the data transmission rate performance for different configurations of smart meters and concentrators
Design and analysis of LTE-WLAN wireless router with QOS preservation
Future wireless networks are envisioned to embrace a higher level of heterogeneity whereby different wireless technologies such as Long Term Evolution UMTS (LTE), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), WCDMA/HSPA, WiMAX, etc, not only will coexist but will also cooperate more closely. This is motivated by the fact that several complementary characteristics exist between these technologies. For example, one technology can be used as access technology while the other can be used for backhaul. To interconnect two or more wireless technologies, the usage of routing device is inevitable. In order to preserve the Quality of Service (QoS) across these technologies which come with different QoS definitions, a more comprehensive approach is required to preserve QoS across two diverse wireless technologies i.e. Enhanced Distributed Coordination Function (EDCA) for WLAN and Uplink/Downlink packet scheduling for LTE. WLAN is reasonably priced, easy to deploy and has been enjoying a wide market acceptance especially in the indoor. The LTE is expected to be the dominant 4G cellular technology. However it will take some time before LTE can attain the same level of adoption as what WLAN has achieved especially in the consumer market.
The main objective of this research project is to design an access router that enables the interworking between WLAN and LTE with QoS preservation. First, the performance of both WLAN and LTE radio interfaces are investigated independently in terms of the data rates, user/system throughput, effect of multiple access and spectral efficiency. Next, different approaches and schemes which facilitate QoS preservation between WLAN and LTE over the router are investigated and evaluated in terms of different performance metrics (voice Mean Opinion Score, video delay, video traffic received, video jitter, video packet loss rate). The design and analysis of the performance are carried out through simulation as the only feasible approach to accomplish this work. OPNET Modeler is used to model the LTE-WLAN router as well as to perform the analysis.
The results of this research verify the feasibility of the proposed router architecture and the interworking paradigm. The elegance of the proposed router implementation is that it does not require massive change in the existing wireless systems, LTE and WLAN to preserve the QoS. The results of the performance analysis show that it is crucial to have a QoS preservation mechanism in the router IP layer at any potential congestion point in the wireless network, to ensure that delay-sensitive and loss-sensitive applications, such as real-time video and voice, pass through unimpeded, relative to the loss-tolerant and delay-tolerant data applications. The comparison of the designed IP QoS preservation scheme namely, Priority Queuing without Block Acknowledgement (PQ noBA) shows that it can support 50% more multimedia application across the router than the other scheme
