A Review of Audio Features and Statistical Models Exploited for Voice Pattern Design
Audio fingerprinting, also named as audio hashing, has been well-known as a
powerful technique to perform audio identification and synchronization. It
basically involves two major steps: fingerprint (voice pattern) design and
matching search. While the first step concerns the derivation of a robust and
compact audio signature, the second step usually requires knowledge about
database and quick-search algorithms. Though this technique offers a wide range
of real-world applications, to the best of the authors' knowledge, a
comprehensive survey of existing algorithms appeared more than eight years ago.
Thus, in this paper, we present a more up-to-date review and, for emphasizing
on the audio signal processing aspect, we focus our state-of-the-art survey on
the fingerprint design step for which various audio features and their

A Conceptual Framework for Motion Based Music Applications
Imaginary projections are the core of the framework for motion
based music applications presented in this paper. Their design depends
on the space covered by the motion tracking device, but also
on the musical feature involved in the application. They can be considered
a very powerful tool because they allow not only to project
in the virtual environment the image of a traditional acoustic instrument,
but also to express any spatially defined abstract concept.
The system pipeline starts from the musical content and, through a
geometrical interpretation, arrives to its projection in the physical
space. Three case studies involving different motion tracking devices
and different musical concepts will be analyzed. The three
examined applications have been programmed and already tested
by the authors. They aim respectively at musical expressive interaction
(Disembodied Voices), tonal music knowledge (Harmonic
Walk) and XX century music composition (Hand Composer)

The words mobility and network are found together in many contexts. The issue alone of modeling geographical user mobility in wireless networks has countless applications. Depending on one’s background, the concept is investigated with very different tools and aims.
Moreover, the last decade saw also a growing interest in code mobility, i.e. the possibility for soft-ware applications (or parts thereof) to migrate and keeps working in different devices and environ-ments. A notable real-life and successful application is distributed computing, which under certain hypothesis can void the need of expensive supercomputers. The general rationale is splitting a very demanding computing task into a large number of independent sub-problems, each addressable by limited-power machines, weakly connected (typically through the Internet, the quintessence of a wired network).
Following this lines of thought, we organized this thesis in two distinct and independent parts:
Part I
It deals with audio fingerprinting, and a special emphasis is put on the application of broadcast mon-itoring and on the implementation aspects. Although the problem is tackled from many sides, one of the most prominent difficulties is the high computing power required for the task. We thus devised and operated a distributed-computing solution, which is described in detail. Tests were conducted on the computing cluster available at the Department of Engineering of the University of Ferrara.
Part II
It focuses instead on wireless networks. Even if the approach is quite general, the stress is on WiFi networks. More specifically, we tried to evaluate how mobile-users’ experience can be improved. Two tools are considered. In the first place, we wrote a packet-level simulator and used it to esti-mate the impact of pricing strategies in allocating the bandwidth resource, finding out the need for such solutions. Secondly, we developed a high-level simulator that strongly advises to deepen the topic of user cooperation for the selection of the “best” point of access, when many are available. Brain mechanisms underlying cue-based memorizing during free viewing of movie Memento
How does the human brain recall and connect relevant memories with unfolding events? To study this, we presented 25 healthy subjects, during functional magnetic resonance imaging, the movie 'Memento' (director C. Nolan). In this movie, scenes are presented in chronologically reverse order with certain scenes briefly overlapping previously presented scenes. Such overlapping "key-frames" serve as effective memory cues for the viewers, prompting recall of relevant memories of the previously seen scene and connecting them with the concurrent scene. We hypothesized that these repeating key-frames serve as immediate recall cues and would facilitate reconstruction of the story piece-by-piece. The chronological version of Memento, shown in a separate experiment for another group of subjects, served as a control condition. Using multivariate event-related pattern analysis method and representational similarity analysis, focal fingerprint patterns of hemodynamic activity were found to emerge during presentation of key-frame scenes. This effect was present in higher-order cortical network with regions including precuneus, angular gyrus, cingulate gyrus, as well as lateral, superior, and middle frontal gyri within frontal poles. This network was right hemispheric dominant. These distributed patterns of brain activity appear to underlie ability to recall relevant memories and connect them with ongoing events, i.e., "what goes with what" in a complex story. Given the real-life likeness of cinematic experience, these results provide new insight into how the human brain recalls, given proper cues, relevant memories to facilitate understanding and prediction of everyday life events.Peer reviewe
