A Delirious Welcome to Anyone in Uniform: The GI Experience in Paris, July - September 1944

Previous studies of relationships between American GIs and the French population during and after Liberation paint two extremes: one of a perfectly handsome American man doling out candy, cigarettes, and kisses, and the other of a rapist and conqueror. In reality, the situation proved to be somewhere between these two realities. In this paper, I will argue that the Franco-American relationship in the months of July, August, and September 1944 was one of utility and necessity that left the French vulnerable and powerless. mLearning: the classroom in your pocket?

This paper reports the findings of a 1 year project which focussed solely on the potential of handheld computers for teacher professional development. The paper considers the fit between theory and practice, viewing the developing literature on mLearning as it might apply to teacher professional development, in the light of research evidence from project teachers using handheld computers. The teachers themselves used the analytical framework for teacher professional knowledge developed by Banks, Leach and Moon to consider their own experiences with the handheld computers. The study finds that handheld digital tools hold a number of pedagogic and pragmatic advantages over laptop or desktop computers for teachers, especially in rural communities; however, further technical development is required to fully orient the devices to classroom rather than office practices

Intraspinal Drug Delivery Reservoir Refill Procedure by Non-Physician Clinicians: A Nation-Wide Survey of Training, Pocket Fill Experience, and Life-Long Learning Behaviors

Intraspinal drug delivery (IDD) is a safe and efficacious method used to deliver medications for the treatment of chronic neurologic disease that requires periodic reservoir refills that can place patients at risk for a rare, accidental but potentially life-threatening, pocket fill. In the United States (US), non-physician clinicians perform this procedure. This study reports the results of a nationwide survey completed by 65 non-physician clinicians, obtained through social media, who performed the reservoir refill procedure. The results of the survey showed no standardized training was used, lack of attention to existing clinical practice guidelines in the training given, lack of supervision and mentoring for inexperienced clinicians, an unexpected number of pocket fills, and limited participation in professional meetings where intraspinal therapy is discussed. Keytag It: An Exploration of a Creative and Customizable Research Guide Promotion

The research guide is a common tool librarians use to communicate with and instruct their audiences. Despite their prevalence and value to users, research guides remain underused. There are many examples of efforts encouraging guide use, but few studies have measured the effectiveness of that promotion. Academic Outreach librarians at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) promote research guides through inexpensive and small keytags--similar to retail customer loyalty keychain tags. Findings of a quantitative analysis suggest the keytags have positively influenced guide use and support anecdotal reports of increased interaction with intended audiences
