Internet enabled modelling of extended manufacturing enterprises using the process based techniques
The paper presents the preliminary results of an ongoing research project on Internet enabled process-based modelling of extended manufacturing enterprises. It is proposed to apply the Open System Architecture for CIM (CIMOSA) modelling framework alongside with object-oriented Petri Net models of enterprise processes and object-oriented techniques for extended enterprises modelling. The main features of the proposed approach are described and some components discussed. Elementary examples of object-oriented Petri Net implementation and real-time visualisation are presented
A review of information flow diagrammatic models for product-service systems
A product-service system (PSS) is a combination of products and services to
create value for both customers and manufacturers. Modelling a PSS based on
function orientation offers a useful way to distinguish system inputs and
outputs with regards to how data are consumed and information is used, i.e.
information flow. This article presents a review of diagrammatic information
flow tools, which are designed to describe a system through its functions. The
origin, concept and applications of these tools are investigated, followed by an
analysis of information flow modelling with regards to key PSS properties. A
case study of selection laser melting technology implemented as PSS will then be
used to show the application of information flow modelling for PSS design. A
discussion based on the usefulness of the tools in modelling the key elements of
PSS and possible future research directions are also presented
Heuristic Approaches for Generating Local Process Models through Log Projections
Local Process Model (LPM) discovery is focused on the mining of a set of
process models where each model describes the behavior represented in the event
log only partially, i.e. subsets of possible events are taken into account to
create so-called local process models. Often such smaller models provide
valuable insights into the behavior of the process, especially when no adequate
and comprehensible single overall process model exists that is able to describe
the traces of the process from start to end. The practical application of LPM
discovery is however hindered by computational issues in the case of logs with
many activities (problems may already occur when there are more than 17 unique
activities). In this paper, we explore three heuristics to discover subsets of
activities that lead to useful log projections with the goal of speeding up LPM
discovery considerably while still finding high-quality LPMs. We found that a
Markov clustering approach to create projection sets results in the largest
improvement of execution time, with discovered LPMs still being better than
with the use of randomly generated activity sets of the same size. Another
heuristic, based on log entropy, yields a more moderate speedup, but enables
the discovery of higher quality LPMs. The third heuristic, based on the
relative information gain, shows unstable performance: for some data sets the
speedup and LPM quality are higher than with the log entropy based method,

Process Mining of Programmable Logic Controllers: Input/Output Event Logs
This paper presents an approach to model an unknown Ladder Logic based
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) program consisting of Boolean logic and
counters using Process Mining techniques. First, we tap the inputs and outputs
of a PLC to create a data flow log. Second, we propose a method to translate
the obtained data flow log to an event log suitable for Process Mining. In a
third step, we propose a hybrid Petri net (PN) and neural network approach to
approximate the logic of the actual underlying PLC program. We demonstrate the
applicability of our proposed approach on a case study with three simulated
scenarios
An Evaluation of Inter-Organizational Workflow Modelling Formalisms
This paper evaluates the dynamic aspects of the UML in the context of inter-organizational workflows. Two evaluation methodologies are used. The first one is ontological and is based on the BWW (Bunge-Wand-Weber) models. The second validation is based on prototyping and consists in the development of a workflow management system in the aerospace industry. Both convergent and divergent results are found from the two validations. Possible enhancements to the UML formalism are suggested from the convergent results. On the other hand, the divergent results suggest the need for a contextual specification in the BWW models. Ce travail consiste en une évaluation des aspects dynamiques du language UML dans un contexte de workflow inter-organisationnel. Le choix du language par rapport à d'autres est motivé par sa richesse grammaticale lui offrant une très bonne adaptation à ce contexte. L'évaluation se fait par une validation ontologique basée sur les modèles BWW (Bunge-Wand-Weber) et par la réalisation d'un prototype de système de gestion de workflows inter-organisationnels. À partir des résultats convergents obtenus des deux différentes analyses, des améliorations au formalisme UML sont suggérées. Enhancing the Supply Chain Performance by Integrating Simulated and Physical Agents into Organizational Information Systems
As the business environment gets more complicated, organizations must be able to respond to the business changes and adjust themselves quickly to gain their competitive advantages. This study proposes an integrated agent system, called SPA, which coordinates simulated and physical agents to provide an efficient way for organizations to meet the challenges in managing supply chains. In the integrated framework, physical agents coordinate with inter-organizations\' physical agents to form workable business processes and detect the variations occurring in the outside world, whereas simulated agents model and analyze the what-if scenarios to support physical agents in making decisions. This study uses a supply chain that produces digital still cameras as an example to demonstrate how the SPA works. In this example, individual information systems of the involved companies equip with the SPA and the entire supply chain is modeled as a hierarchical object oriented Petri nets. The SPA here applies the modified AGNES data clustering technique and the moving average approach to help each firm generalize customers\' past demand patterns and forecast their future demands. The amplitude of forecasting errors caused by bullwhip effects is used as a metric to evaluate the degree that the SPA affects the supply chain performance. The experimental results show that the SPA benefits the entire supply chain by reducing the bullwhip effects and forecasting errors in a dynamic environment.Supply Chain Performance Enhancement; Bullwhip Effects; Simulated Agents; Physical Agents; Dynamic Customer Demand Pattern Discovery

Simulation and modeling tools and techniques are most important in this day and age. While simulation carries the needed work, tools for visualizing the results help in the decision-making process. Simulation ranges from a simple queue to molecular dynamics, including seismic reliability analysis, structural integrity assessment, games, reliability engineering, and system safety.
