Metadata for describing learning scenarios under European Higher Education Area paradigm
In this paper we identify the requirements for creating formal descriptions of learning scenarios designed under the European Higher
Education Area paradigm, using competences and learning activities as the basic pieces of the learning process, instead of contents and learning resources, pursuing personalization. Classical arrangements of content based courses are no longer enough to describe all the richness of this new learning process, where user profiles, competences and complex hierarchical itineraries need to be properly combined. We study the intersection with the current IMS Learning Design specification and the
additional metadata required for describing such learning scenarios. This new approach involves the use of case based learning and collaborative
learning in order to acquire and develop competences, following adaptive learning paths in two structured levels
Integrating identity-based cryptography in IMS service authentication
Nowadays, the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a promising research field.
Many ongoing works related to the security and the performances of its
employment are presented to the research community. Although, the security and
data privacy aspects are very important in the IMS global objectives, they
observe little attention so far. Secure access to multimedia services is based
on SIP and HTTP digest on top of IMS architecture. The standard deploys AKA-MD5
for the terminal authentication. The third Generation Partnership Project
(3GPP) provided Generic Bootstrapping Architecture (GBA) to authenticate the
subscriber before accessing multimedia services over HTTP. In this paper, we
propose a new IMS Service Authentication scheme using Identity Based
cryptography (IBC). This new scheme will lead to better performances when there
are simultaneous authentication requests using Identity-based Batch
Verification. We analyzed the security of our new protocol and we presented a

Shortcomings of learning design approaches and a possible way out
Shifting away from traditional instructional design to younger research streams like personalized, workflow-based or collaborative e-learning, learning design (LD) has become an important issue in the field of technology-enhanced learning. Nevertheless, current LD approaches turn out to be rather unhandy or costly in teaching and research practice. In this paper, we discuss these shortcomings and propose an alternative solution approach which is based on a web application mashup, learner interactions, and a semantic layer for tool recommendations. As the evaluation of our first prototype is in progress, we can not highlight first experiences, but outline benefits and possible application scenarios in this position paper
Integrating Context-Awareness in the IP Multimedia Subsystem for Enhanced Session Control and Service Provisioning Capabilities
The 3GPP-defined IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is becoming the de-facto standard for IP-based multimedia communication services. It consists of an overlay control and service layer that is deployed on top of IP-based mobile and fixed networks. This layer encompasses a set of common functions (e.g. session control functions allowing the initiation/modification/termination of sessions) and service logics that are needed for the seamless provisioning of IP multimedia services to users, via different access technologies. As it continues to evolve, the IMS still faces several challenges including: the enabling of innovative and personalized services that would appeal to users and increase network operators' revenues; its interaction with other types of networks (e.g. wireless sensor networks) as means to enhance its capabilities; and the support of advanced QoS schemes that would manage the network resources in an efficient and adaptive manner. The context-awareness concept, which comes from the pervasive computing field, signifies the ability to use situational information (or context) in support to operations and decision making and for the provision of relevant services to the user. Context-awareness is considered to enhance users' experience and is seen as an enabler to adaptability and service personalization - two capabilities that could play important roles in telecommunication environments. This thesis focuses on the introduction of the context-awareness technology in the IMS, as means to enhance its session control and service provisioning capabilities. It starts by presenting the necessary background information, followed by a derivation of requirements and a review of the related work. To ensure the availability of contextual information within the network, we then propose an architecture for context information acquisition and management in the IMS. This architecture leverages and extends the 3GPP presence framework. Building on the capabilities of this architecture, we demonstrate how the managed information could be integrated in IMS operations, at the control and service levels. Showcasing control level integration, we propose a novel context-aware call differentiation framework as means to offer enhanced QoS support (for sessions/calls) in IMS-based networks. This framework enables the differentiation between different categories of calls at the IMS session control level, via dynamic and adaptive resource allocation, in addition to supporting a specialized charging model. Furthermore, we also propose a framework for enhanced IMS emergency communication services. This framework addresses the limitations of existing IP-based emergency solutions, by offering three main improvements: a QoS-enhanced emergency service; a context-aware personalized emergency service; and a conferencing-enhanced emergency service. We demonstrate the use of context awareness at the IMS service level using two new context-aware IMS applications. Finally, to validate our solutions and evaluate their performance, we build various proof-of-concept prototypes and OPNET simulation model
Creating virtual communities of practice for learning technology in higher education: Issues, challenges and experiences
The need for a Web portal to support the rapidly growing field of learning technology has been well established through a number of national surveys and scoping studies over recent years. The overarching vision has been the provision of a virtual environment to assist in informing and developing professional practice in the use of learning technologies. This paper outlines the issues and challenges in creating such a portal through the experiences of developing the RESULTs Network. In the paper, design and participation issues are considered within the wider context of online and networked approaches to supporting practice and professional development. User participation methodologies and technical developments for RESULTs are described in relation to a review of existing representations of practice and a comprehensive survey amongst the learning technology users’ community. An outline of key achievements and experiences is presented, followed by some conclusions regarding the cultural and political issues in creating a viable and sustainable facility and suggestions for possible future direction in national provision
Models, Techniques and Applications of e-Learning Personalization
In recent years Web has become mainstream medium for communication and information
dissemination. This paper presents approaches and methods for adaptive learning implementation, which are
used in some contemporary web-interfaced Learning Management Systems (LMSs). The problem is not how to
create electronic learning materials, but how to locate and utilize the available information in personalized way.
Different attitudes to personalization are briefly described in section 1. The real personalization requires a user
profile containing information about preferences, aims, and educational history to be stored and used by the
system. These issues are considered in section 2. A method for development and design of adaptive learning
content in terms of learning strategy system support is represented in section 3. Section 4 includes a set of
innovative personalization services that are suggested by several very important research projects (SeLeNe
project, ELENA project, etc.) dated from the last few years. This section also describes a model for role- and
competency-based learning customization that uses Web Services approach. The last part presents how
personalization techniques are implemented in Learning Grid-driven applications

NGN-compliant communications services to interoperate while being accessed
through different kinds of access networks, preferably broadband. IMS-NGN
services essential by both consumer and corporate users are by now used to
access services, even communications services through the web and web-based
communities and social networks, It is key for success of IMS-based services to
be provided with efficient web access, so users can benefit from those new
services by using web-based applications and user interfaces, not only NGN-IMS
User Equipments and SIP protocol. Many Service are under planning which
provided only under convergence of IMS & Web 2.0. Convergence between Web 2.0
and NGN-IMS creates and serves new invented innovative, entertainment and
information appealing as well as user centric services and applications. These
services merge features from WWW and Communication worlds. On the one hand,
interactivity, ubiquity, social orientation, user participation and content
generation, etc. are relevant characteristics coming from Web 2.0 services.
Parallel IMS enables services including multimedia telephony, media sharing
(video-audio), instant messaging with presence and context, online directory,
etc. all of them applicable to mobile, fixed or convergent telecom networks.
With this paper, this paper brings out the benefits of adopting web 2.0
