    Biologically Inspired Approaches to Automated Feature Extraction and Target Recognition

    Ongoing research at Boston University has produced computational models of biological vision and learning that embody a growing corpus of scientific data and predictions. Vision models perform long-range grouping and figure/ground segmentation, and memory models create attentionally controlled recognition codes that intrinsically cornbine botton-up activation and top-down learned expectations. These two streams of research form the foundation of novel dynamically integrated systems for image understanding. Simulations using multispectral images illustrate road completion across occlusions in a cluttered scene and information fusion from incorrect labels that are simultaneously inconsistent and correct.     A sensory system for robots using evolutionary artificial neural networks.

    The thesis presents the research involved with developing an Intelligent Vision System for an animat that can analyse a visual scene in uncontrolled environments. Inspiration was drawn both from Biological Visual Systems and Artificial Image Recognition Systems. Several Biological Systems including the Insect, Toad and Human Visual Systems were studied alongside popular Pattern Recognition Systems such as fully connected Feedforward Networks, Modular Neural Networks and the Neocognitron. The developed system, called the Distributed Neural Network (DNN) was based on the sensory-motor connections in the common toad, Bufo Bufo. The sparsely connected network architecture has features of modularity enhanced by the presence of lateral inhibitory connections. It was implemented using Evolutionary Artificial Neural Networks (EANN). A novel method called FUSION was used to train the DNN, which is an amalgamation of several concepts of learning in Artificial Neural Networks such as Unsupervised Learning, Supervised Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Competitive Learning, Self-organisation and Fuzzy Logic. The DNN has unique feature detecting capabilities. When the DNN was tested using images that comprised of combination of features used in the training set, the DNN was successful in recognising individual features. The combinations of features were never used in the training set. This is a unique feature of the DNN trained using Fusion that cannot be matched by any other popular ANN architecture or training method. The system proved to be robust in dealing with New and Noisy Images. The unique features of the DNN make the network suitable for applications in robotics such as obstacle avoidance and terrain recognition, where the environment is unpredictable. The network can also be used in the field of Medical Imaging, Biometrics (Face and Finger Print Recognition) and Quality Inspection in the Food Processing Industry and applications in other uncontrolled environments

    Investigating multisensory integration in emotion recognition through bio-inspired computational models

    Emotion understanding represents a core aspect of human communication. Our social behaviours are closely linked to expressing our emotions and understanding others emotional and mental states through social signals. The majority of the existing work proceeds by extracting meaningful features from each modality and applying fusion techniques either at a feature level or decision level. However, these techniques are incapable of translating the constant talk and feedback between different modalities. Such constant talk is particularly important in continuous emotion recognition, where one modality can predict, enhance and complement the other. This paper proposes three multisensory integration models, based on different pathways of multisensory integration in the brain; that is, integration by convergence, early cross-modal enhancement, and integration through neural synchrony. The proposed models are designed and implemented using third-generation neural networks, Spiking Neural Networks (SNN). The models are evaluated using widely adopted, third-party datasets and compared to state-of-the-art multimodal fusion techniques, such as early, late and deep learning fusion. Evaluation results show that the three proposed models have achieved comparable results to the state-of-the-art supervised learning techniques. More importantly, this paper demonstrates plausible ways to translate constant talk between modalities during the training phase, which also brings advantages in generalisation and robustness to noise.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Memory and information processing in neuromorphic systems

    A striking difference between brain-inspired neuromorphic processors and current von Neumann processors architectures is the way in which memory and processing is organized. As Information and Communication Technologies continue to address the need for increased computational power through the increase of cores within a digital processor, neuromorphic engineers and scientists can complement this need by building processor architectures where memory is distributed with the processing. In this paper we present a survey of brain-inspired processor architectures that support models of cortical networks and deep neural networks. These architectures range from serial clocked implementations of multi-neuron systems to massively parallel asynchronous ones and from purely digital systems to mixed analog/digital systems which implement more biological-like models of neurons and synapses together with a suite of adaptation and learning mechanisms analogous to the ones found in biological nervous systems. We describe the advantages of the different approaches being pursued and present the challenges that need to be addressed for building artificial neural processing systems that can display the richness of behaviors seen in biological systems.Comment: Submitted to Proceedings of IEEE, review of recently proposed neuromorphic computing platforms and system

    An investigation of the cortical learning algorithm

    Pattern recognition and machine learning fields have revolutionized countless industries and applications from biometric security to modern industrial assembly lines. The fields continue to accelerate as faster, more efficient processing hardware becomes commercially available. Despite the accelerated growth of the pattern recognition and machine learning fields, computers still are unable to learn, reason, and perform rudimentary tasks that humans and animals find routine. Animals are able to move fluidly, understand their environment, and maximize their chances of survival through adaptation - animals demonstrate intelligence. A primary argument in this thesis that we have not yet achieved a level of intelligence similar to humans and animals in the pattern recognition and machine learning fields, not due to a lack of computational power but, rather, due to lack of understanding of how the cortical structures of mammalian brain interact and operate. This thesis describes a cortical learning algorithm (CLA) that models how the cortical structures in the mammalian neocortex operate. Furthermore, a high level understanding of how the cortical structures in the mammalian brain interact, store semantic patterns, and auto-recall these patterns for future predictions are discussed. Finally, we demonstrate that the algorithm can build and maintain a model of its environment and provide feedback for actions and/or classification in a similar fashion to our understanding of cortical operation
