An Overview of the Use of Neural Networks for Data Mining Tasks
In the recent years the area of data mining has experienced a considerable demand for technologies that extract knowledge from large and complex data sources. There is a substantial commercial interest as well as research investigations in the area that aim to develop new and improved approaches for extracting information, relationships, and patterns from datasets. Artificial Neural Networks (NN) are popular biologically inspired intelligent methodologies, whose classification, prediction and pattern recognition capabilities have been utilised successfully in many areas, including science, engineering, medicine, business, banking, telecommunication, and many other fields. This paper highlights from a data mining perspective the implementation of NN, using supervised and unsupervised learning, for pattern recognition, classification, prediction and cluster analysis, and focuses the discussion on their usage in bioinformatics and financial data analysis tasks
DeepLOB: Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Limit Order Books
We develop a large-scale deep learning model to predict price movements from
limit order book (LOB) data of cash equities. The architecture utilises
convolutional filters to capture the spatial structure of the limit order books
as well as LSTM modules to capture longer time dependencies. The proposed
network outperforms all existing state-of-the-art algorithms on the benchmark
LOB dataset [1]. In a more realistic setting, we test our model by using one
year market quotes from the London Stock Exchange and the model delivers a
remarkably stable out-of-sample prediction accuracy for a variety of
instruments. Importantly, our model translates well to instruments which were
not part of the training set, indicating the model's ability to extract
universal features. In order to better understand these features and to go
beyond a "black box" model, we perform a sensitivity analysis to understand the
rationale behind the model predictions and reveal the components of LOBs that
are most relevant. The ability to extract robust features which translate well
to other instruments is an important property of our model which has many other

Modelling tourism demand to Spain with machine learning techniques. The impact of forecast horizon on model selection
This study assesses the influence of the forecast horizon on the forecasting performance of several machine learning techniques. We compare the fo recastaccuracy of Support Vector Regression (SVR) to Neural Network (NN) models, using a linear model as a benchmark. We focus on international tourism demand to all seventeen regions of Spain. The SVR with a Gaussian radial basis function kernel outperforms the rest of the models for the longest forecast
horizons. We also find that machine learning methods improve their
forecasting accuracy with respect to linear models as forecast horizons increase.
This results shows the suitability of SVR for medium and long term

An academic review: applications of data mining techniques in finance industry
With the development of Internet techniques, data volumes are doubling every two years, faster than predicted by Moore’s Law. Big Data Analytics becomes particularly important for enterprise business. Modern computational technologies will provide effective tools to help understand hugely accumulated data and leverage this information to get insights into the finance industry. In order to get actionable insights into the business, data has become most valuable asset of financial organisations, as there are no physical products in finance industry to manufacture. This is where data mining techniques come to their rescue by allowing access to the right information at the right time. These techniques are used by the finance industry in various areas such as fraud detection, intelligent forecasting, credit rating, loan management, customer profiling, money laundering, marketing and prediction of price movements to name a few. This work aims to survey the research on data mining techniques applied to the finance industry from 2010 to 2015.The review finds that Stock prediction and Credit rating have received most attention of researchers, compared to Loan prediction, Money Laundering and Time Series prediction. Due to the dynamics, uncertainty and variety of data, nonlinear mapping techniques have been deeply studied than linear techniques. Also it has been proved that hybrid methods are more accurate in prediction, closely followed by Neural Network technique. This survey could provide a clue of applications of data mining techniques for finance industry, and a summary of methodologies for researchers in this area. Especially, it could provide a good vision of Data Mining Techniques in computational finance for beginners who want to work in the field of computational finance
Time Series Trend Analysis Based on K-Means and Support Vector Machine
In this paper, we apply both supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques to predict the trend of financial time series based on trading rules. These techniques are K-means for clustering the similar group of data and support vector machine for training and testing historical data to perform a one-day-ahead trend prediction. To evaluate the method, we compare the proposed method with traditional back-propagation neural network and a standalone support vector machine. In addition, to implement this combination method, we use the financial time series data obtained from Yahoo Finance website and the experimental results also validate the effectiveness of the method
