    User-Oriented Summaries Using a PSO Based Scoring Optimization Method

    Automatic text summarization tools have a great impact on many fields, such as medicine, law, and scientific research in general. As information overload increases, automatic summaries allow handling the growing volume of documents, usually by assigning weights to the extracted phrases based on their significance in the expected summary. Obtaining the main contents of any given document in less time than it would take to do that manually is still an issue of interest. In this article, a new method is presented that allows automatically generating extractive summaries from documents by adequately weighting sentence scoring features using Particle Swarm Optimization. The key feature of the proposed method is the identification of those features that are closest to the criterion used by the individual when summarizing. The proposed method combines a binary representation and a continuous one, using an original variation of the technique developed by the authors of this paper. Our paper shows that using user labeled information in the training set helps to find better metrics and weights. The empirical results yield an improved accuracy compared to previous methods used in this field.Instituto de Investigación en Informátic

    Holistic biomimicry: a biologically inspired approach to environmentally benign engineering

    Humanity's activities increasingly threaten Earth's richness of life, of which mankind is a part. As part of the response, the environmentally conscious attempt to engineer products, processes and systems that interact harmoniously with the living world. Current environmental design guidance draws upon a wealth of experiences with the products of engineering that damaged humanity's environment. Efforts to create such guidelines inductively attempt to tease right action from examination of past mistakes. Unfortunately, avoidance of past errors cannot guarantee environmentally sustainable designs in the future. One needs to examine and understand an example of an environmentally sustainable, complex, multi-scale system to engineer designs with similar characteristics. This dissertation benchmarks and evaluates the efficacy of guidance from one such environmentally sustainable system resting at humanity's doorstep - the biosphere. Taking a holistic view of biomimicry, emulation of and inspiration by life, this work extracts overarching principles of life from academic life science literature using a sociological technique known as constant comparative method. It translates these principles into bio-inspired sustainable engineering guidelines. During this process, it identifies physically rooted measures and metrics that link guidelines to engineering applications. Qualitative validation for principles and guidelines takes the form of review by biology experts and comparison with existing environmentally benign design and manufacturing guidelines. Three select bio-inspired guidelines at three different organizational scales of engineering interest are quantitatively validated. Physical experiments with self-cleaning surfaces quantify the potential environmental benefits generated by applying the first, sub-product scale guideline. An interpretation of a metabolically rooted guideline applied at the product / organism organizational scale is shown to correlate with existing environmental metrics and predict a sustainability threshold. Finally, design of a carpet recycling network illustrates the quantitative environmental benefits one reaps by applying the third, multi-facility scale bio-inspired sustainability guideline. Taken as a whole, this work contributes (1) a set of biologically inspired sustainability principles for engineering, (2) a translation of these principles into measures applicable to design, (3) examples demonstrating a new, holistic form of biomimicry and (4) a deductive, novel approach to environmentally benign engineering. Life, the collection of processes that tamed and maintained themselves on planet Earth's once hostile surface, long ago confronted and solved the fundamental problems facing all organisms.     Is collaborative re-use a solution to help reduce waste production while maintaining economic growth? The organisational level study in the UK

    The current dominant waste management techniques (recycling, recovery and disposal), which are ‘science first’ solutions, are failing to achieve a middle ground between conventional economic growth and decreasing wastefulness. This thesis, therefore, focuses on exploring re-use, a ‘human action’ solution. The overall aim is to investigate perceptions of re-use among UK corporations and their re-use supply chains, and the factors facilitating and preventing the re-use of materials becoming normal practice. The study focuses on those organisations that are regarded as leaders in the field of waste management. To carry out this investigation, the research uses a sequential mixed-methods approach, wherein the findings provided by the content analysis are utilised to develop the semi-structured interview questions. In doing so, a pro-environmental framework, CEBA (Communication, Engagement/action, Behavioural maintenance, and Avoidance of the value action gap), is used as an analytical tool. The research findings show that there are ways in which organisations can collaborate to deliver re-use activities that can play a role in achieving a middle ground between conventional economic growth and decreasing wastefulness where third sector organisations (TSOs) are identified as key facilitators. These findings are presented in the form of collaborative re-use models. Conversely, findings also indicate that there are two key reasons behind corporations’ lack of engagement in re-use behaviour. Firstly, there are ambiguities and variations in the understanding of re-use. Secondly, corporations’ primary motivation is to increase profitability, which supersedes any social benefits that are attained through re-use practices. The research concludes that, depending on the type of organisation and the type of materials, engagement in and perceptions of re-use varies. This further indicates that re-use is a complex phenomenon which is in its nascent stages of development, and still far from becoming a norm. The research recommends exploring re-use longevity for future studies

    ICMR2013 was organised by Cranfield University on the 19-20 September 2013. The conference focuses on any aspects of product development, manufacturing technology, manufacturing systems, information systems and digital technologies. It provides an excellent avenue for researchers to present state-of-the-art multidisciplinary manufacturing research and exchange ideas. In addition to the four keynote speeches from Airbus and Rolls-Royce and three invited presentations, there are 108 papers in these proceedings. These papers are split into 24 technical sessions. The International Conference on Manufacturing Research is a major event for academics and industrialists engaged in manufacturing research. Held annually in the UK since the late 1970s, the conference is renowned as a friendly and inclusive environment that brings together a broad community of researchers who share a common goal; developing and managing the technologies and operations that are key to sustaining the success of manufacturing businesses. For over two decades, ICMR has been the main manufacturing research conference organised in the UK, successfully bringing researchers, academics and industrialists together to share their knowledge and experiences. Initiated a National Conference by the Consortium of UK University Manufacturing Engineering Heads (COMEH), it became an International Conference in 2003. COMEH is an independent body established in 1978. Its main aim is to promote manufacturing engineering education, training and research. To achieve this, the Consortium maintains a close liaison with government bodies concerned with the training and continuing development of professional engineers, while responding to the appropriate consultative and discussion documents and other initiatives. COMEH is represented on the Engineering Professor’s council (EPC) and it organises and supports national manufacturing engineering education research conferences and symposia
