A Robust Transformation-Based Learning Approach Using Ripple Down Rules for Part-of-Speech Tagging
In this paper, we propose a new approach to construct a system of
transformation rules for the Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging task. Our approach is
based on an incremental knowledge acquisition method where rules are stored in
an exception structure and new rules are only added to correct the errors of
existing rules; thus allowing systematic control of the interaction between the
rules. Experimental results on 13 languages show that our approach is fast in
terms of training time and tagging speed. Furthermore, our approach obtains
very competitive accuracy in comparison to state-of-the-art POS and

An efficient method for multiobjective optimal control and optimal control subject to integral constraints
We introduce a new and efficient numerical method for multicriterion optimal
control and single criterion optimal control under integral constraints. The
approach is based on extending the state space to include information on a
"budget" remaining to satisfy each constraint; the augmented
Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman PDE is then solved numerically. The efficiency of our
approach hinges on the causality in that PDE, i.e., the monotonicity of
characteristic curves in one of the newly added dimensions. A semi-Lagrangian
"marching" method is used to approximate the discontinuous viscosity solution
efficiently. We compare this to a recently introduced "weighted sum" based
algorithm for the same problem. We illustrate our method using examples from
flight path planning and robotic navigation in the presence of friendly and

Concentration inequalities for random fields via coupling
We present a new and simple approach to concentration inequalities for
functions around their expectation with respect to non-product measures, i.e.,
for dependent random variables. Our method is based on coupling ideas and does
not use information inequalities. When one has a uniform control on the
coupling, this leads to exponential concentration inequalities. When such a
uniform control is no more possible, this leads to polynomial or
stretched-exponential concentration inequalities. Our abstract results apply to
Gibbs random fields, in particular to the low-temperature Ising model which is

A New Approach to Probabilistic Programming Inference
We introduce and demonstrate a new approach to inference in expressive
probabilistic programming languages based on particle Markov chain Monte Carlo.
Our approach is simple to implement and easy to parallelize. It applies to
Turing-complete probabilistic programming languages and supports accurate
inference in models that make use of complex control flow, including stochastic
recursion. It also includes primitives from Bayesian nonparametric statistics.
Our experiments show that this approach can be more efficient than previously

Coherent Quantum Optical Control with Subwavelength Resolution
We suggest a new method for quantum optical control with nanoscale
resolution. Our method allows for coherent far-field manipulation of individual
quantum systems with spatial selectivity that is not limited by the wavelength
of radiation and can, in principle, approach a few nanometers. The selectivity
is enabled by the nonlinear atomic response, under the conditions of
Electromagnetically Induced Transparency, to a control beam with intensity
vanishing at a certain location. Practical performance of this technique and
its potential applications to quantum information science with cold atoms,

Economic health-aware LPV-MPC based on system reliability assessment for water transport network
This paper proposes a health-aware control approach for drinking water transport networks. This approach is based on an economic model predictive control (MPC) that considers an additional goal with the aim of extending the components and system reliability. The components and system reliability are incorporated into the MPC model using a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) modeling approach. The MPC controller uses additionally an economic objective function that determines the optimal filling/emptying sequence of the tanks considering that electricity price varies between day and night and that the demand also follows a 24-h repetitive pattern. The proposed LPV-MPC control approach allows considering the model nonlinearities by embedding them in the parameters. The values of these varying parameters are updated at each iteration taking into account the new values of the scheduling variables. In this way, the optimization problem associated with the MPC problem is solved by means of Quadratic Programming (QP) to avoid the use of nonlinear programming. This iterative approach reduces the computational load compared to the solution of a nonlinear optimization problem. A case study based on the Barcelona water transport network is used for assessing the proposed approach performance.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
