A Model Taxonomy of Learning Objectives for the Online Learning Environment
Although course content at institutions of higher education is delivered through a variety of ways that include; online, blended, mobile learning, and others, the teaching methodology adopted by many senior faculty members has largely remained unchanged. Traditional teaching methodologies that are based on a cognitivist-oriented approach continue to serve as the foundation for structuring course content and assessing student achievement. Cognitivism includes the subcategories of multiple intelligences, brain-based learning, and learning styles. Through a cognitivist-orientated approach, faculty place greater emphasis on assessing a learner\u27s knowledge, feelings, and creativity. However, in many instances processes such as memory, problem-solving, comprehension, and attention are also measured.
In contrast, the development of 21st century skills and understandings among online learners requires that faculty adopt a social-constructivist approach to teaching and learning. Constructivist theory is founded on the assertion that individuals construct new understandings by reflecting on prior knowledge and experience. A social-constructivist approach to teaching requires learners to actively seek knowledge, interpret information, and work collaboratively for the purpose of generating new knowledge.
Drawing on an understanding of the importance for situating educational learning outcomes within a socio-cultural context, this session presents research findings that support the continued development of a model taxonomy of educational objectives for the online learning environment. These research findings are based on an 8 year investigation that explored the use of the Blackboard Instructional Management System for delivering online graduate teacher education courses. Seven levels for the assessment of educational objectives were developed and are categorized according to the ways that adult learners assimilate information and communicate in an online learning environment.
This presentation offers practical recommendations for using the taxonomy as a framework to guide the development or revision of online courses. Methods for the development of benchmark assessments at each level in the taxonomy are included
Teaching and learning in virtual worlds: is it worth the effort?
Educators have been quick to spot the enormous potential afforded by virtual worlds for situated and authentic learning, practising tasks with potentially serious consequences in the real world and for bringing geographically dispersed faculty and students together in the same space (Gee, 2007; Johnson and Levine, 2008). Though this potential has largely been realised, it generally isnât without cost in terms of lack of institutional buy-in, steep learning curves for all participants, and lack of a sound theoretical framework to

Transforming pre-service teacher curriculum: observation through a TPACK lens
This paper will discuss an international online collaborative learning experience through the lens of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework. The teacher knowledge required to effectively provide transformative learning experiences for 21st century learners in a digital world is complex, situated and changing. The discussion looks beyond the opportunity for knowledge development of content, pedagogy and technology as components of TPACK towards the interaction between those three components. Implications for practice are also discussed. In todayâs technology infused classrooms it is within the realms of teacher educators, practising teaching and pre-service teachers explore and address effective practices using technology to enhance learning

Methods and models of next generation technology enhanced learning - White Paper
Our understanding of learning with technology is increasingly lagging behind technological advancements, such that it is no longer possible to fully understand learning with technologies without bringing together evidence from practice-based experiences and theoretical insight to inform research, design, policy and practice. Furthermore, whilst practical experiences and theoretical insights make significant contributions towards understanding learning with new technologies, the dynamic nature of learner practices and study contexts make it difficult to predict future requirements in terms of methods and models for next generation technology enhanced learning.
We therefore require formal and comprehensive methods and models of learning with technology that accommodate theory and practice whilst allowing us to anticipate methodological innovations that capture future transitions and changes in learner practices and study contexts, in order to inform research, design, policy and practice.
Workshop participants represented different communities of interest including research, design, evaluation and assessment. The overall objective was to anticipate methodological innovations in technology enhanced learning research and design over the next 5/10 years
Understanding Cognition Across Modalities for the Assessment of Digital Resources
Drawing from the theories of the cognitive process, this paper explores the transmission, retention and transformation of information across oral, written, and digital modes of communication and how these concepts can be used to examine the assessment of digital resource tools. The exploration of interactions across modes of communication is used to gain an understanding of the interaction between the student, digital resource and teacher. Cognitive theory is considered as a basis for the assessment of digital resource tools. Lastly, principles for the assessment of digital resource tools are presented along with how assessment can be incorporated in the educational practice to enhance learning in higher education
Facilitating argumentative knowledge construction with computer-supported collaboration scripts
Online discussions provide opportunities for learners to engage in argumentative debate, but learners rarely formulate well-grounded arguments or benefit individually from participating in online discussions. Learners often do not explicitly warrant their arguments and fail to construct counterarguments (incomplete formal argumentation structure), which is hypothesized to impede individual knowledge acquisition. Computer-supported scripts have been found to support learners during online discussions. Such scripts can support specific discourse activities, such as the construction of single arguments, by supporting learners in explicitly warranting their claims or in constructing specific argumentation sequences, e.g., argumentâcounterargument sequences, during online discussions. Participation in argumentative discourse is seen to promote both knowledge on argumentation and domain-specific knowledge. However, there have been few empirical investigations regarding the extent to which computer-supported collaboration scripts can foster the formal quality of argumentation and thereby facilitate the individual acquisition of knowledge. One hundred and twenty (120) students of Educational Science participated in the study with a 2Ă2-factorial design (with vs. without script for the construction of single arguments and with vs. without script for the construction of argumentation sequences) and were randomly divided into groups of three. Results indicated that the collaboration scripts could improve the formal quality of single arguments and the formal quality of argumentation sequences in online discussions. Scripts also facilitated the acquisition of knowledge on argumentation, without affecting the acquisition of domainspecific knowledge
Building Collaborative Capacities in Learners: The M/cyclopedia Project Revisited
In this paper we trace the evolution of a project using a wiki-based learning environment in a tertiary education setting. The project has the pedagogical goal of building learnersâ capacities to work effectively in the networked, collaborative, creative environments of the knowledge economy. The paper explores the four key characteristics of a âprodusageâ environment and identifies four strategic capacities that need to be developed in learners to be effective âprodusersâ (user-producers). A case study is presented of our experiences with the subject New Media Technologies, run at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia.
