    A Survey of Spiking Neural Network Accelerator on FPGA

    Due to the ability to implement customized topology, FPGA is increasingly used to deploy SNNs in both embedded and high-performance applications. In this paper, we survey state-of-the-art SNN implementations and their applications on FPGA. We collect the recent widely-used spiking neuron models, network structures, and signal encoding formats, followed by the enumeration of related hardware design schemes for FPGA-based SNN implementations. Compared with the previous surveys, this manuscript enumerates the application instances that applied the above-mentioned technical schemes in recent research. Based on that, we discuss the actual acceleration potential of implementing SNN on FPGA. According to our above discussion, the upcoming trends are discussed in this paper and give a guideline for further advancement in related subjects

    Human activity recognition: suitability of a neuromorphic approach for on-edge AIoT applications

    Human activity recognition (HAR) is a classification problem involving time-dependent signals produced by body monitoring, and its application domain covers all the aspects of human life, from healthcare to sport, from safety to smart environments. As such, it is naturally well suited for on-edge deployment of personalized point-of-care (POC) analyses or other tailored services for the user. However, typical smart and wearable devices suffer from relevant limitations regarding energy consumption, and this significantly hinders the possibility for successful employment of edge computing for tasks like HAR. In this paper, we investigate how this problem can be mitigated by adopting a neuromorphic approach. By comparing optimized classifiers based on traditional deep neural network (DNN) architectures as well as on recent alternatives like the Legendre Memory Unit (LMU), we show how spiking neural networks (SNNs) can effectively deal with the temporal signals typical of HAR providing high performances at a low energy cost. By carrying out an application-oriented hyperparameter optimization, we also propose a methodology flexible to be extended to different domains, to enlarge the field of neuro-inspired classifier suitable for on-edge artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) applications

    Today we observe amazing performance achieved by Machine Learning (ML); for specific tasks it even surpasses human capabilities. Unfortunately, nothing comes for free: the hidden cost behind ML performance stems from its high complexity in terms of operations to be computed and the involved amount of data. For this reasons, custom Artificial Intelligence hardware accelerators based on alternative computing paradigms are attracting large interest. Such dedicated devices support the energy-hungry data movement, speed of computation, and memory resources that MLs require to realize their full potential. However, when ML is deployed on safety-/mission-critical applications, dependability becomes a concern. This paper presents the state of the art of custom Artificial Intelligence hardware architectures for ML, here Spiking and Convolutional Neural Networks, and shows the best practices to evaluate their dependability

    A spintronic Huxley-Hodgkin-analogue neuron implemented with a single magnetic tunnel junction

    Spiking neural networks aim to emulate the brain's properties to achieve similar parallelism and high-processing power. A caveat of these neural networks is the high computational cost to emulate, while current proposals for analogue implementations are energy inefficient and not scalable. We propose a device based on a single magnetic tunnel junction to perform neuron firing for spiking neural networks without the need of any resetting procedure. We leverage two physics, magnetism and thermal effects, to obtain a bio-realistic spiking behavior analogous to the Huxley-Hodgkin model of the neuron. The device is also able to emulate the simpler Leaky-Integrate and Fire model. Numerical simulations using experimental-based parameters demonstrate firing frequency in the MHz to GHz range under constant input at room temperature. The compactness, scalability, low cost, CMOS-compatibility, and power efficiency of magnetic tunnel junctions advocate for their broad use in hardware implementations of spiking neural networks.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

    Neuromorphic Computing Systems for Tactile Sensing Perception

    Touch sensing plays an important role in humans daily life. Tasks like exploring, grasping and manipulating objects deeply rely on it. As such, Robots and hand prosthesis endowed with the sense of touch can better and more easily manipulate objects, and physically collaborate with other agents. Towards this goal, information about touched objects and surfaces has to be inferred from raw data coming from the sensors. The orientation of edges, which is employed as a pre-processing stage in both artificial vision and touch, is a key indication for object discrimination. Inspired on the encoding of edges in human first-order tactile afferents, we developed a biologically inspired, spiking models architecture that mimics human tactile perception with computational primitives that are implementable on low-power subthreshold neuromorphic hardware. The network architecture uses three layers of Leaky Integrate and Fire neurons to distinguish different edge orientations of a bar pressed on the artificial skin of the iCub robot. We demonstrated that the network architecture can learn the appropriate connectivity through unsupervised spike-based learning, and that the number and spatial distribution of sensitive areas within receptive fields are important in edge orientation discrimination. The unconstrained and random structure of the connectivity among layers can produce unbalanced activity in the output neurons, which are driven by a variable amount of synaptic inputs. We explored two different mechanisms of synaptic normalization (weights normalization and homeostasis), defining how this can be useful during the learning phase and inference phase. The network is successfully able to discriminate between 35 orientations of 36 (0 degree to 180 degree with 5 degree step increments) with homeostasis and weights normalization mechanism. Besides edge orientation discrimination, we modified the network architecture to be able to classify six different touch modalities (e.g. poke, press, grab, squeeze, push, and rolling a wheel). We demonstrated the ability of the network to learn appropriate connectivity patterns for the classification, achieving a total accuracy of 88.3 %. Furthermore, another application scenario on the tactile object shapes recognition has been considered because of its importance in robotic manipulation. We illustrated that the network architecture with 2 layers of spiking neurons was able to discriminate the tactile object shapes with accuracy 100 %, after integrating to it an array of 160 piezoresistive tactile sensors where the object shapes are applied

    Event-based Vision: A Survey

    Event cameras are bio-inspired sensors that differ from conventional frame cameras: Instead of capturing images at a fixed rate, they asynchronously measure per-pixel brightness changes, and output a stream of events that encode the time, location and sign of the brightness changes. Event cameras offer attractive properties compared to traditional cameras: high temporal resolution (in the order of microseconds), very high dynamic range (140 dB vs. 60 dB), low power consumption, and high pixel bandwidth (on the order of kHz) resulting in reduced motion blur. Hence, event cameras have a large potential for robotics and computer vision in challenging scenarios for traditional cameras, such as low-latency, high speed, and high dynamic range. However, novel methods are required to process the unconventional output of these sensors in order to unlock their potential. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging field of event-based vision, with a focus on the applications and the algorithms developed to unlock the outstanding properties of event cameras. We present event cameras from their working principle, the actual sensors that are available and the tasks that they have been used for, from low-level vision (feature detection and tracking, optic flow, etc.) to high-level vision (reconstruction, segmentation, recognition). We also discuss the techniques developed to process events, including learning-based techniques, as well as specialized processors for these novel sensors, such as spiking neural networks. Additionally, we highlight the challenges that remain to be tackled and the opportunities that lie ahead in the search for a more efficient, bio-inspired way for machines to perceive and interact with the world

    Plasticity and Adaptation in Neuromorphic Biohybrid Systems

    Neuromorphic systems take inspiration from the principles of biological information processing to form hardware platforms that enable the large-scale implementation of neural networks. The recent years have seen both advances in the theoretical aspects of spiking neural networks for their use in classification and control tasks and a progress in electrophysiological methods that is pushing the frontiers of intelligent neural interfacing and signal processing technologies. At the forefront of these new technologies, artificial and biological neural networks are tightly coupled, offering a novel \u201cbiohybrid\u201d experimental framework for engineers and neurophysiologists. Indeed, biohybrid systems can constitute a new class of neuroprostheses opening important perspectives in the treatment of neurological disorders. Moreover, the use of biologically plausible learning rules allows forming an overall fault-tolerant system of co-developing subsystems. To identify opportunities and challenges in neuromorphic biohybrid systems, we discuss the field from the perspectives of neurobiology, computational neuroscience, and neuromorphic engineering. \ua9 2020 The Author(s
