    A Coreference Service for Enterprise Application Integration using Linked Data

    The use of semantic and Linked Data technologies for Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) is increasing in recent years. Linked Data and Semantic Web technologies such as the Resource Description Framework (RDF) data model provide several key advantages over the current de-facto Web Service and XML based integration approaches. The flexibility provided by representing the data in a more versatile RDF model using ontologies enables avoiding complex schema transformations and makes data more accessible using Web standards, preventing the formation of data silos. These three benefits represent an edge for Linked Data-based EAI. However, work still has to be performed so that these technologies can cope with the particularities of the EAI scenarios in different terms, such as data control, ownership, consistency, or accuracy. The first part of the paper provides an introduction to Enterprise Application Integration using Linked Data and the requirements imposed by EAI to Linked Data technologies focusing on one of the problems that arise in this scenario, the coreference problem, and presents a coreference service that supports the use of Linked Data in EAI systems. The proposed solution introduces the use of a context that aggregates a set of related identities and mappings from the identities to different resources that reside in distinct applications and provide different views or aspects of the same entity. A detailed architecture of the Coreference Service is presented explaining how it can be used to manage the contexts, identities, resources, and applications which they relate to. The paper shows how the proposed service can be utilized in an EAI scenario using an example involving a dashboard that integrates data from different systems and the proposed workflow for registering and resolving identities. As most enterprise applications are driven by business processes and involve legacy data, the proposed approach can be easily incorporated into enterprise applications

    MODI framework - A model-based approach to data integration

    In this thesis we propose a model-based approach to support data integration between heterogeneous enterprise systems. It reviews literature about interoperability, and presents several aspects of data integration problems. Further, it intends to give the reader an understanding of model-driven development which offers different standards for modeling and model transformation. The work of this thesis presents difficulties encountered in data integration by analysing problem examples. Based on the analysis, data integration problems are defined. We examine technologies related to interoperability, data integration and mapping. In addition, we present existing solution approaches to deal with the problem examples. The main goal is to specify how to develop tools for solving data integration problems by describing and realizing mapping between models. The technique which is specified to realize the mapping is presented in our proposed solution, which we have called the MODI Framework

    Ontology-based patterns for the integration of business processes and enterprise application architectures

    Increasingly, enterprises are using Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) as an approach to Enterprise Application Integration (EAI). SOA has the potential to bridge the gap between business and technology and to improve the reuse of existing applications and the interoperability with new ones. In addition to service architecture descriptions, architecture abstractions like patterns and styles capture design knowledge and allow the reuse of successfully applied designs, thus improving the quality of software. Knowledge gained from integration projects can be captured to build a repository of semantically enriched, experience-based solutions. Business patterns identify the interaction and structure between users, business processes, and data. Specific integration and composition patterns at a more technical level address enterprise application integration and capture reliable architecture solutions. We use an ontology-based approach to capture architecture and process patterns. Ontology techniques for pattern definition, extension and composition are developed and their applicability in business process-driven application integration is demonstrated

    Informal Practices of Ethnic Entrepreneurs Operating Micro Sized Enterprises

    This research aims to develop a more nuanced understanding of informal practices that have manifested specifically in the operations of South Asian entrepreneurs operating micro sized enterprises. This research focuses on the experiences of entrepreneurs and the enterprises they operate in order to explore and comprehend the boundaries of informality and illegality. The study is underpinned by structuration theory, i.e. agency, the actions of entrepreneurs, and structure, internal and external influences that promote entrepreneurs to engage in informal activities. To support the focus on the enterprises of respondents, I created a Hexagon model canvas that is utilised to present the operations of micro enterprises which assists in demonstrating the integration of informal practices. A qualitative inductive approach was incorporated to gather data through semi-structured and unstructured interviews, and conversations with South Asian entrepreneurs operating micro sized enterprises within South Yorkshire. A thematic data analysis enabled the production of themes such as employment and health and safety that revolve around cash transactions. Findings suggest that the above types of activities and the avoidance of regulations has become an integral aspect of business operations that manifest as informal practices. In addition to the creation of the Hexagon model canvas to analyse business models, this research proposes an enterprise framework that highlights five specific types of micro sized enterprises owned and managed by South Asian entrepreneurs. This research also includes entrepreneurial concepts that demonstrates South Asian entrepreneurs are predominantly opportunity driven and operate either Type 2, The Legal Enterprise with Marginal Illegal Activity, or Type 3, The Opportunistic Enterprise

    Towards a flexible service integration through separation of business rules

    Driven by dynamic market demands, enterprises are continuously exploring collaborations with others to add value to their services and seize new market opportunities. Achieving enterprise collaboration is facilitated by Enterprise Application Integration and Business-to-Business approaches that employ architectural paradigms like Service Oriented Architecture and incorporate technological advancements in networking and computing. However, flexibility remains a major challenge related to enterprise collaboration. How can changes in demands and opportunities be reflected in collaboration solutions with minimum time and effort and with maximum reuse of existing applications? This paper proposes an approach towards a more flexible integration of enterprise applications in the context of service mediation. We achieve this by combining goal-based, model-driven and serviceoriented approaches. In particular, we pay special attention to the separation of business rules from the business process of the integration solution. Specifying the requirements as goal models, we separate those parts which are more likely to evolve over time in terms of business rules. These business rules are then made executable by exposing them as Web services and incorporating them into the design of the business process.\ud Thus, should the business rules change, the business process remains unaffected. Finally, this paper also provides an evaluation of the flexibility of our solution in relation to the current work in business process flexibility research

    Innovative product usually refers to product that comprises of creativity and new ideas. In the development of such a new product, there is often a lack of historical knowledge and data available to be used to perform cost estimation accurately. This is due to the fact that traditional cost estimation methods are used to predict costs only after a product model has been built, and not at an early design stage when there is little data and information available. In light of this, original equipment manufacturers are also facing critical challenges of becoming globally competitive and increasing demands from customer for continuous innovation.     Combining goal-oriented and model-driven approaches to solve the Payment Problem Scenario
