A molecular survey of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato in central-eastern Europe

Central-eastern Europe is an endemic region for cystic echinococcosis where multiple species of intermediate hosts are commonly infected with Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato tapeworms of major medical and veterinary importance. Investigations of the genetic variation of 25 Echinococcus isolates from five countries (Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, Poland) were undertaken using three mitochondrial DNA markers. The 18 isolates from pigs derived from Slovakia and Ukraine and the four human isolates from Slovakia, Poland and Ukraine were identified as E. canadensis G7, whereas the three human isolates from Romania and Hungary were classified as E. granulosus sensu stricto G1. This study reports the first confirmed human case of E. granulosus s.s. in Hungary. The haplotype G7A with two polymorphic sites relative to the most common regional variant of E. canadensis G7 was recorded in both pigs from Ukarine and in a single pig isolate from Slovakia. The results of this study support the circumstantial evidence that E. canadensis G7 with low infectivity for humans is highly prevalent in the northern parts of the region (Poland, Slovakia, forest-steppe zone of Ukraine),while infections with E. granulosus s.s. which are highly infectious for humans are more commonly encountered in Romania and Hungary

Publication Portfolio of the Czech Economists and Problems of Rankings

This paper presents "micro" results of empirical analysis of 1235 individual publication records of 1300 economists in the Czech Republic retrieved from international databases Web of Science and EconLit for the period 1994-2003. Publication portfolio described by research publication flows from particular institutions to particular journals is provided. Statistics on the Employment Situation of People With Disabilities: A Compendium of National Methodologies

[From Summary] This Compendium describes the methodologies currently in use in 95 countries to compile such statistics. The ILO Bureau of Statistics, in collaboration with the ILO Disability Programme within the InFocus Programme on Skills, Knowledge and Employability, has conducted a worldwide survey to analyse the different approaches currently used. A questionnaire was sent to ministries of labour and national statistical offices in early 2003, aimed at collecting information about the availability of statistics of disabled persons, especially their employment situation

Circulatory Disease in the NHS: Measuring Trends in Hospital Costs and Output

Following the publication of the Atkinson Review of the measurement of government outputs in the National Accounts, there has been great interest in measuring the productivity growth of the National Health Service. Such macro measures of productivity are important when deciding how much public money to devote to the NHS, and in holding the NHS to account. However, it is also important to gain an understanding of the productivity of individual programmes of care, so as to ensure that resources are allocated efficiently within the NHS. Hitherto, such information has not been available. This report is an exploratory study of the feasibility and usefulness of developing measures of growth in outputs, costs and productivity of a single programme of care within the NHS: hospital treatment of circulatory diseases.

Effects of Active Labor Market Programs on the Transition Rate from Unemployment into Regular Jobs in the Slovak Republic

The system of active labor market policies (ALMP) in the Slovak Republic consists to a large extent of the creation of socially purposeful and publicly useful jobs and of retraining of unemployed workers. So far, the effects of these types of active labor market policies have hardly been analyzed. This paper uses a unique administrative data from 20 Slovak districts to analyze to what extent it is beneficial for unemployed workers who want a regular job to accept a temporary ALMP-job or enter a retraining program. We find that indeed it is beneficial for workers to do so.models;unemployment;labour policy

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Library of Estonia organized a Conference on Union Catalogs which took place in Tallinn, in the National Library of Estonia on October 17–19, 2002.
