    An Universal Image Attractiveness Ranking Framework

    We propose a new framework to rank image attractiveness using a novel pairwise deep network trained with a large set of side-by-side multi-labeled image pairs from a web image index. The judges only provide relative ranking between two images without the need to directly assign an absolute score, or rate any predefined image attribute, thus making the rating more intuitive and accurate. We investigate a deep attractiveness rank net (DARN), a combination of deep convolutional neural network and rank net, to directly learn an attractiveness score mean and variance for each image and the underlying criteria the judges use to label each pair. The extension of this model (DARN-V2) is able to adapt to individual judge's personal preference. We also show the attractiveness of search results are significantly improved by using this attractiveness information in a real commercial search engine. We evaluate our model against other state-of-the-art models on our side-by-side web test data and another public aesthetic data set. With much less judgments (1M vs 50M), our model outperforms on side-by-side labeled data, and is comparable on data labeled by absolute score.Comment: Accepted by 2019 Winter Conference on Application of Computer Vision (WACV

    Determining the most representative image on a Web page

    We investigate how to determine the most representative image on a Web page. This problem has not been thoroughly investigated and, up to today, only expert-based algorithms have been proposed in the literature. We attempt to improve the performance of known algorithms with the use of Support Vector Machines (SVM). Besides, our algorithm distinguishes itself from existing literature with the introduction of novel image features, including previously unused meta-data protocols. Also, we design and attempt a less-restrictive ranking methodology in the image preprocessing stage of our algorithm. We find that the application of the SVM framework with our improved classification methodology increases the F1 score from 27.2% to 38.5%, as compared to a state-of-the-art method. Introducing novel image features and applying backward feature selection, we find that the F1 score rises to 40.0%. Lastly, we use a class-weighted SVM in order to resolve the imbalance in number of representative images. This final modification improves the classification performance of our algorithm even further to 43.9%, outperforming our benchmark algorithms, including those of Facebook and Google.     Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective. The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines. From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research

    An integrated ranking algorithm for efficient information computing in social networks

    Social networks have ensured the expanding disproportion between the face of WWW stored traditionally in search engine repositories and the actual ever changing face of Web. Exponential growth of web users and the ease with which they can upload contents on web highlights the need of content controls on material published on the web. As definition of search is changing, socially-enhanced interactive search methodologies are the need of the hour. Ranking is pivotal for efficient web search as the search performance mainly depends upon the ranking results. In this paper new integrated ranking model based on fused rank of web object based on popularity factor earned over only valid interlinks from multiple social forums is proposed. This model identifies relationships between web objects in separate social networks based on the object inheritance graph.
