    Desegregating HRM: A Review and Synthesis of Micro and Macro Human Resource Management Research

    Since the early 1980’s the field of HRM has seen the independent evolution of two independent subfields (strategic and functional), which we believe is dysfunctional to the field as a whole. We propose a typology of HRM research based on two dimensions: Level of analysis (individual/ group or organization) and number of practices (single or multiple). We use this framework to review the recent research in each of the four sub-areas. We argue that while significant progress has been made within each area, the potential for greater gains exists by looking across each area. Toward this end we suggest some future research directions based on a more integrative view of HRM. We believe that both areas can contribute significantly to each other resulting in a more profound impact on the field of HRM than each can contribute independently

    Citizen Science 2.0 : Data Management Principles to Harness the Power of the Crowd

    Citizen science refers to voluntary participation by the general public in scientific endeavors. Although citizen science has a long tradition, the rise of online communities and user-generated web content has the potential to greatly expand its scope and contributions. Citizens spread across a large area will collect more information than an individual researcher can. Because citizen scientists tend to make observations about areas they know well, data are likely to be very detailed. Although the potential for engaging citizen scientists is extensive, there are challenges as well. In this paper we consider one such challenge – creating an environment in which non-experts in a scientific domain can provide appropriate and accurate data regarding their observations. We describe the problem in the context of a research project that includes the development of a website to collect citizen-generated data on the distribution of plants and animals in a geographic region. We propose an approach that can improve the quantity and quality of data collected in such projects by organizing data using instance-based data structures. Potential implications of this approach are discussed and plans for future research to validate the design are described

    The structuration theory originally provided by Anthony Giddens and the advance improvement of the theory has been trying to solve the dilemma came up in the epistemological aspects of the social sciences and humanity. Social scientists apparently have to choose whether they are too sociological or too psychological. Nonetheless, in the works of the classical sociologist, Emile Durkheim, this thing has been stated long time ago. The usage of some models to construct the bottom-up theories has followed the vast of computational technology. This model is well known as the agent based modeling. This paper is giving a philosophical perspective of the agent-based social sciences, as the sociology to cope the emergent factors coming up in the sociological analysis. The framework is made by using the artificial neural network model to show how the emergent phenomena came from the complex system. Understanding the society has self-organizing (autopoietic) properties, the Kohonen’s self-organizing map is used in the paper. By the simulation examples, it can be seen obviously that the emergent phenomena in social system are seen by the sociologist apart from the qualitative framework on the atomistic sociology. In the end of the paper, it is clear that the emergence sociology is needed for sharpening the sociological analysis in the emergence sociology

    A Cognitive Model of Information Requirement Analysis on the Basis of Structure Building Theory of Language Comprehension

    In order to identify the factors important for getting information requirements right, the research in information requirement analysis has investigated the analytical behavior of information analysts in specifying information requirements. One stream of research has focused on the differences between novice and expert information analysts. Richer domain knowledge and modeling knowledge have been recognized as main qualities of expert information analysts for better performance in information requirement analysis (Adelson and Soloway, 1985; Sutcliffe and Maiden, 1990; Vitalari and Dickson, 1983). Another stream of research has focused on comparing the effectiveness of various information requirement analysis techniques in specifying information requirements. However, the research results show that no information requirement analysis technique has consistently better performance than others (Kim and Lerch, 1992; Vessey and Cogner; 1994; Yadav, Bravoco, Chatfield, and Raikumar; 1988)
