    Dynamic Model-based Management of Service-Oriented Infrastructure.

    Models are an effective tool for systems and software design. They allow software architects to abstract from the non-relevant details. Those qualities are also useful for the technical management of networks, systems and software, such as those that compose service oriented architectures. Models can provide a set of well-defined abstractions over the distributed heterogeneous service infrastructure that enable its automated management. We propose to use the managed system as a source of dynamically generated runtime models, and decompose management processes into a composition of model transformations. We have created an autonomic service deployment and configuration architecture that obtains, analyzes, and transforms system models to apply the required actions, while being oblivious to the low-level details. An instrumentation layer automatically builds these models and interprets the planned management actions to the system. We illustrate these concepts with a distributed service update operation

    A diagnostic service tool using FMEA

    The use of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) as the basis for a Diagnostic Service Tool (DST) is discussed in the context of Design for Service. Designers are assisted in developing diagnostic service tools early in the design process rather than this being a post-production activity. A system for computerised interactive FMEA generation from FMEA elements has been created by enhancing an existing object-oriented FMEA model to generate the FMEA elements and Diagnostic FMEA. The use of an object-oriented FMEA environment and FMEA object libraries promotes the reuse of information and increases data availability for diagnostic tool development. The Diagnostic Service Tool (DST) uses existing failure mode data to determine further characteristics of the failure of parts. The prototype software has been evaluated in a field service application using four automatic transmission problem cases. There was significant difference in repair times between the use of conventional repair manuals and DST. The research has demonstrated that the prototype software is successful in providing effective field service tools and suggests a method of providing feedback to the designer. In this way knowledge sharing between engineering and field service can be continuous and provide a significant improvement in product development. The approach has validity across many domains but has so far only been evaluated in the context of automotive systems and in particular automatic transmissions. Application in other areas would require substantial efforts in knowledge acquisition but the same general methods would be used

    An ontology-based model management architecture for service innovation

    Organizations have indicated renewed interest in service innovation, design and management, given the growth of service sector. Decision support systems (DSS) play an important role in supporting this endeavor, through management of organizational resources such as data and models. Given the global nature of service value chains, there have been ever increasing demands on managing, sharing, and reusing these heterogeneous and distributed resources, both within and across organizational boundaries, through DSS consisting of database management systems (DBMS) and model management systems (MMS). Analogous to DBMS, model management systems focus on the management of decision models, dealing with representation, storage, and retrieval of models as well as a variety of applications such as analysis, reuse, sharing, and composition of models. Recent developments in the areas of semantic web and ontologies have provided a rich tool set for computational reasoning about these resources in an intelligent manner. In this chapter, we leverage these advances and apply service-oriented design principles to propose an ontology-based model management architecture supporting service innovation. The architecture is illustrated with case study scenarios and current state of implementation. The role of potential information technologies in supporting the architecture is also discussed. We then provide a roadmap to make advancements in research in this direction

    OMiLAB: the Role of Model-driven Digital Innovation in Information Systems Development

    OMiLAB is a community of practice interested in the value of conceptual models and the role they play in Information Systems development or operation. One key value proposition of the OMiLAB is a Digital Innovation environment having conceptual modeling at its core, as a means for integrating a business-oriented view with a technical view. The business-oriented view is based on a Digital Design Thinking method, whereas the technical view benefits from a diverse set of model-driven IoT devices for cyber-physical experimentation. The semantic and functional integrator between the two views is the BEE-UP modeling tool, together with the Agile Modeling Method Engineering framework - which can be employed to expand the modeling tool\u27s semantic space with domain-specific and technology-specific concepts or functionality. Academic and industry partners are joining the OMiLAB ecosystem as OMiLAB Nodes, sharing knowledge assets and artifacts developed with the help of OMiLAB\u27s Digital Innovation environment. These are disseminated via dedicated research streams and scientific events such as the NEMO summer school (initiated in 2014), the PROSE workshop (initiated in 2017) and a Springer book series on domain-specific conceptual modeling (initiated in 2016). Tool-specific tutorials have been held in recent Business Informatics and Information Systems conferences (e.g. HICSS, BIR, PoEM) to raise awareness on the value of conceptual models for such communities. Recently, the OMiLAB-FSEGA node was established at Babeș-Bolyai University, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. The thematic focus of the node is Digital Business Models, targeting topics such as semantics of Product-Service Systems, their dynamic pricing, supplying and automated delivery from a design-oriented research perspective. In relation to this thematic specificity, the talk will highlight the value of this node for both research and education

    The paper describes the SysMan approach to interactive configuration management of distributed software components (objects). Domains are used to group objects to apply policy and for convenient naming of objects. Configuration Management involves using a domain browser to locate relevant objects within the domain service; creating new objects which form a distributed service; allocating these objects to physical nodes in the system and binding the interfaces of the objects to each other and to existing services. Dynamic reconfiguration of the objects forming a service can be accomplished using this tool.     From LCA to PSS – Making leaps towards sustainability by applying product/service-system thinking in product development

    Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the standardised and globally recognised tool for quantifying environmental impact of goods and services. A key aspect in LCA is the consideration of whole life cycle systems. The application of LCA in product development inherently comprises the quest for optimisations on all system levels. However, as the act of ecodesign conventionally focuses on physical products, the search for potential optimisations is usually directed 'downwards', i.e. towards lower system levels, resulting in optimised components within products rather than optimised products within their surrounding systems. This paper will exemplify that when broadening the ecodesign horizon to environmental product/service system (PSS) design, there is a better possibility of applying a system-oriented life cycle thinking approach, and therefore a potential to yield extreme improvements towards sustainability

    Technologies for Social Justice: Lessons from Sex Workers on the Front Lines

    This paper provides analysis and insight from a collaborative process with a Canadian sex worker rights organization called Stella, l'amie de Maimie, where we reflect on the use of and potential for digital technologies in service delivery. We analyze the Bad Client and Aggressor List - a reporting tool co-produced by sex workers in the community and Stella staff to reduce violence against sex workers. We analyze its current and potential future formats as an artefact for communication, in a context of sex work criminalization and the exclusion of sex workers from traditional routes for reporting violence and accessing governmental systems for justice. This paper addresses a novel aspect of HCI research that relates to digital technologies and social justice. Reflecting on the Bad Client and Aggressor List, we discuss how technologies can interact with justice-oriented service delivery and develop three implications for design

    Halogen is one of the leading digital design consultancies in Norway, with expertise in design of critical systems and applications, websites, intranets, products and processes. One common denominator in all of Halogen’s services and projects is a human-centered design approach aiming for holistic user experiences. The company has through recent years gone from being experts in digital user experience to become a strategic design expertise with focus on service design, design of critical systems, innovation and work processes. This means that projects are much more complex on many levels such as operation, process and deliveries. Halogen has established a partnership with The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) by applying the proven methods and techniques of Systems Oriented Design into a practical and commercial context. Through the last couple of years Halogen has carried out more than 20 design projects using System Oriented Design as a central approach. Our experience with applying Systems Oriented Design in a commercial context has led us to develop new techniques and expand the usage of the method. This includes: 1. The use of predesigned GIGA-map layouts. 2. The development of four main GIGA-map typologies. 3. Commercial usage of the concept of establishing ceative spaces both at company office and mirrored to our clients. 4. Developing techniques for selling Systems Oriented Design.
