A review of approaches to supply chain communications: from manufacturing to construction
With the increasing importance of computer-based communication technologies, communication networks are becoming crucial in supply chain management. Given the objectives of the supply chain: to have the right products in the right quantities, at the right place, at the right moment and at minimal cost, supply chain management is situated at the intersection of different professional sectors. This is particularly the case in construction, since building needs for its fabrication the incorporation of a number of industrial products. This paper provides a review of the main approaches to supply chain communications as used mainly in manufacturing industries. The paper analyses the extent to which these have been applied to construction. It also reviews the on-going developments and research activities in this domain
Location models in the public sector
The past four decades have witnessed an explosive growth in the field of networkbased facility location modeling. This is not at all surprising since location policy is one of the most profitable areas of applied systems analysis in regional science and ample theoretical and applied challenges are offered. Location-allocation models seek the location of facilities and/or services (e.g., schools, hospitals, and warehouses) so as to optimize one or several objectives generally related to the efficiency of the system or to the allocation of resources. This paper concerns the location of facilities or services in discrete space or networks, that are related to the public sector, such as emergency services (ambulances, fire stations, and police units), school systems and postal facilities. The paper is structured as follows: first, we will focus on public facility location models that use some type of coverage criterion, with special emphasis in emergency services. The second section will examine models based on the P-Median problem and some of the issues faced by planners when implementing this formulation in real world locational decisions. Scenario-based forecast for the electricity demand in Qatar and the role of energy efficiency improvements
We model the electricity consumption in the market segment that compose the Qatari electricity market. We link electricity consumption to GDP growth and Population Growth. Building on the estimated model, we develop long-range forecasts of electricity consumption from 2017 to 2030 over different scenarios for the economic drivers. In addition, we proxy for electricity efficiency improvements by reducing the long-run elasticity of electricity consumption to GDP and Population. We show that electricity efficiency has a crucial role in controlling the future development of electricity consumption. Energy policies should consider this aspect and support both electricity efficiency improvement programs, as well as a price reform
Modular System for Shelves and Coasts (MOSSCO v1.0) - a flexible and multi-component framework for coupled coastal ocean ecosystem modelling
Shelf and coastal sea processes extend from the atmosphere through the water
column and into the sea bed. These processes are driven by physical, chemical,
and biological interactions at local scales, and they are influenced by
transport and cross strong spatial gradients. The linkages between domains and
many different processes are not adequately described in current model systems.
Their limited integration level in part reflects lacking modularity and
flexibility; this shortcoming hinders the exchange of data and model components
and has historically imposed supremacy of specific physical driver models. We
here present the Modular System for Shelves and Coasts (MOSSCO,
http://www.mossco.de), a novel domain and process coupling system
tailored---but not limited--- to the coupling challenges of and applications in
the coastal ocean. MOSSCO builds on the existing coupling technology Earth
System Modeling Framework and on the Framework for Aquatic Biogeochemical
Models, thereby creating a unique level of modularity in both domain and
process coupling; the new framework adds rich metadata, flexible scheduling,
configurations that allow several tens of models to be coupled, and tested
setups for coastal coupled applications. That way, MOSSCO addresses the
technology needs of a growing marine coastal Earth System community that
encompasses very different disciplines, numerical tools, and research

Business model innovation: Creating value in times of change
We highlight business model innovation as a way for general managers and entrepreneurs to create and appropriate value, especially in times of economic change. Business model innovation, which involves designing a modified or new activity system, relies on recombining the existing resources of a firm and its partners, and it does not require significant investments in R&D.
