Sparse Radial Sampling LBP for Writer Identification
In this paper we present the use of Sparse Radial Sampling Local Binary
Patterns, a variant of Local Binary Patterns (LBP) for text-as-texture
classification. By adapting and extending the standard LBP operator to the
particularities of text we get a generic text-as-texture classification scheme
and apply it to writer identification. In experiments on CVL and ICDAR 2013
datasets, the proposed feature-set demonstrates State-Of-the-Art (SOA)
performance. Among the SOA, the proposed method is the only one that is based
on dense extraction of a single local feature descriptor. This makes it fast
and applicable at the earliest stages in a DIA pipeline without the need for
segmentation, binarization, or extraction of multiple features.Comment: Submitted to the 13th International Conference on Document Analysis

Construction and evaluation of classifiers for forensic document analysis
In this study we illustrate a statistical approach to questioned document
examination. Specifically, we consider the construction of three classifiers
that predict the writer of a sample document based on categorical data. To
evaluate these classifiers, we use a data set with a large number of writers
and a small number of writing samples per writer. Since the resulting
classifiers were found to have near perfect accuracy using leave-one-out
cross-validation, we propose a novel Bayesian-based cross-validation method for

Digital Palaeography
This article seeks to explore new digital ways of distinguishing between scribal hands in medieval manuscripts. An analysis of traditional palaeographical approaches to hand identification will be followed by a discussion in which attention will be paid both to the use of computer software to enhance existing methods of scribal identification, and to the benefits of "Quill", an innovative automatic writer identification tool. A case study involving a manuscript of the collected works of Christine de Pizan (London, British Library, Harley 4431) will serve to demonstrate that traditional palaeographical methods of analysing scribal hands can greatly benefit from the use of specialised computer software
Classification and Verification of Online Handwritten Signatures with Time Causal Information Theory Quantifiers
We present a new approach for online handwritten signature classification and
verification based on descriptors stemming from Information Theory. The
proposal uses the Shannon Entropy, the Statistical Complexity, and the Fisher
Information evaluated over the Bandt and Pompe symbolization of the horizontal
and vertical coordinates of signatures. These six features are easy and fast to
compute, and they are the input to an One-Class Support Vector Machine
classifier. The results produced surpass state-of-the-art techniques that
employ higher-dimensional feature spaces which often require specialized
software and hardware. We assess the consistency of our proposal with respect
to the size of the training sample, and we also use it to classify the
