    Trialing project-based learning in a new EAP ESP course: A collaborative reflective practice of three college English teachers

    Currently in many Chinese universities, the traditional College English course is facing the risk of being ‘marginalized’, replaced or even removed, and many hours previously allocated to the course are now being taken by EAP or ESP. At X University in northern China, a curriculum reform as such is taking place, as a result of which a new course has been created called ‘xue ke’ English. Despite the fact that ‘xue ke’ means subject literally, the course designer has made it clear that subject content is not the target, nor is the course the same as EAP or ESP. This curriculum initiative, while possibly having been justified with a rationale of some kind (e.g. to meet with changing social and/or academic needs of students and/or institutions), this is posing a great challenge for, as well as considerable pressure on, a number of College English teachers who have taught this single course for almost their entire teaching career. In such a context, three teachers formed a peer support group in Semester One this year, to work collaboratively co-tackling the challenge, and they chose Project-Based Learning (PBL) for the new course. This presentation will report on the implementation of this project, including the overall designing, operational procedure, and the teachers’ reflections. Based on discussion, pre-agreement was reached on the purpose and manner of collaboration as offering peer support for more effective teaching and learning and fulfilling and pleasant professional development. A WeChat group was set up as the chief platform for messaging, idea-sharing, and resource-exchanging. Physical meetings were supplementary, with sound agenda but flexible time, and venues. Mosoteach cloud class (lan mo yun ban ke) was established as a tool for virtual learning, employed both in and after class. Discussions were held at the beginning of the semester which determined only brief outlines for PBL implementation and allowed space for everyone to autonomously explore in their own way. Constant further discussions followed, which generated a great deal of opportunities for peer learning and lesson plan modifications. A reflective journal, in a greater or lesser detailed manner, was also kept by each teacher to record the journey of the collaboration. At the end of the semester, it was commonly recognized that, although challenges existed, the collaboration was overall a success and they were all willing to continue with it and endeavor to refine it to be a more professional and productive approach

    Information and Communication Technologies as means for self-improvement at remote universities: the example of Urgench State University, Uzbekistan

    This paper describes the research conducted at the Information Resource Center of Urgench State University, located in the Khorezm region of Uzbekistan, on the possibilities and challenges the students and lecturers face in their pursuit for self-improvement and self-education. The article discloses new qualitative approaches and IT methods in the teaching and educational processes in higher education of Central Asian countries in transition, the overall aim of which is to close the gap and shape the spiritual values of the young generation in the globalizing world. The framework conditions for this have been set by the Government of Uzbekistan through particular Decrees, aiming at the creation of e-education at universities and institutions throughout the country and specifically in the remote regions as to improve the access to regularly updated information, to motivate the use of IT in classes as well as to enhance the responsibility of the information services of universities for assuring the quality of research and teaching (pedagogical) activities of the lecturers. The research showed that the Internet can function inter alia as a controlling device when education is delivered through the web. Collection, analysis and preparation of educational-methodological materials on specific subjects and extracurricular activities require specific knowledge on IT and information literacy both in the teaching staff and the students

    International Research on Translation Teaching: A Review (2008-2017)

    This paper generally reviews the situation of international translation teaching research from five perspectives: research trends, subjects, contents, research nature, and the authors’ disciplinary backgrounds. The results indicate that: (1) on the whole, the number of papers published steadily increases; (2) the undergraduates majoring in translation take up a dominant percentage of the subjects; (3) the content focuses on thematic research and applied research; (4) speculative research are accounting for the main part in methodology, in which literature method is usually employed as research instrument; (5) the authors’ academic backgrounds mainly focus on the fields of linguistics and translation, presenting a multi-disciplinary feature. Finally, the characteristics and development trends of international translation teaching and research are summarized and enlightened

    Business Process Management Education in Academia: Status, challenges, and Recommendations

    In response to the growing proliferation of Business Process Management (BPM) in industry and the demand this creates for BPM expertise, universities across the globe are at various stages of incorporating knowledge and skills in their teaching offerings. However, there are still only a handful of institutions that offer specialized education in BPM in a systematic and in-depth manner. This article is based on a global educators’ panel discussion held at the 2009 European Conference on Information Systems in Verona, Italy. The article presents the BPM programs of five universities from Australia, Europe, Africa, and North America, describing the BPM content covered, program and course structures, and challenges and lessons learned. The article also provides a comparative content analysis of BPM education programs illustrating a heterogeneous view of BPM. The examples presented demonstrate how different courses and programs can be developed to meet the educational goals of a university department, program, or school. This article contributes insights on how best to continuously sustain and reshape BPM education to ensure it remains dynamic, responsive, and sustainable in light of the evolving and ever-changing marketplace demands for BPM expertise

    Enhancing Students’ Mobile-Assisted Language Learning through Self-Assessment in a Chinese College EFL Context

    The rapid development of mobile communication technology, high penetration of mobile devices as well as the increasing number of mobile English learning applications all together facilitate the feasibility and popularity of mobile-assisted English learning among Chinese college students. Self-assessment is always recommended as a powerful strategy to enhance learning by helping learners regulate their study and improve their motivation and engagement, so it may also offer the potential to evaluate students’ mobile autonomous learning in the new era. This study investigates the current condition of Chinese college students’ mobile-assisted English learning, and which self-assessment strategies are employed during the process. Data collected from the questionnaire, which surveyed about 300 undergraduates from 7 Chinese public and private universities, show the popularity of mobile-assisted English learning among Chinese undergraduates. However, in terms of self-assessment strategies, the results are less optimistic, for only about half of the respondents use it with a medium to high frequency. The reasons, analyzed through a follow-up interview, mainly lie in the lack of strong will and motivation, the loneliness of learning alone and the difficulty in finding the perfect application. Suggestions for strengthening self-assessment include improving knowledge of what self-assessment is and its benefits, planning one’s study properly, improving collaboration with classmates, involving teachers as supporters and paying more attention to subsequent reflection

    Affordances and limitations of learning analytics for computer-assisted language learning: a case study of the VITAL project

    Learning analytics (LA) has emerged as a field that offers promising new ways to support failing or weaker students, prevent drop-out and aid retention. However, other research suggests that large datasets of learner activity can be used to understand online learning behaviour and improve pedagogy. While the use of LA in language learning has received little attention to date, available research suggests that understanding language learner behaviour could provide valuable insights into task design for instructors and materials designers, as well as help students with effective learning strategies and personalised learning pathways. This paper first discusses previous research in the field of language learning and teaching based on learner tracking and the specific affordances of LA for CALL, as well as its inherent limitations and challenges. The second part of the paper analyses data arising from the European Commission (EC) funded VITAL project that adopted a bottom-up pedagogical approach to LA and implemented learner activity tracking in different blended or distance learning settings. Referring to data arising from 285 undergraduate students on a Business French course at Hasselt University which used a flipped classroom design, statistical and process-mining techniques were applied to map and visualise actual uses of online learning resources over the course of one semester. Results suggested that most students planned their self-study sessions in accordance with the flipped classroom design, both in terms of their timing of online activity and selection of contents. Other metrics measuring active online engagement – a crucial component of successful flipped learning - indicated significant differences between successful and non-successful students. Meaningful learner patterns were revealed in the data, visualising students’ paths through the online learning environment and uses of the different activity types. The research implied that valuable insights for instructors, course designers and students can be acquired based on the tracking and analysis of language learner data and the use of visualisation and process-mining tools
