    Multi-layer Architecture For Storing Visual Data Based on WCF and Microsoft SQL Server Database

    In this paper we present a novel architecture for storing visual data. Effective storing, browsing and searching collections of images is one of the most important challenges of computer science. The design of architecture for storing such data requires a set of tools and frameworks such as SQL database management systems and service-oriented frameworks. The proposed solution is based on a multi-layer architecture, which allows to replace any component without recompilation of other components. The approach contains five components, i.e. Model, Base Engine, Concrete Engine, CBIR service and Presentation. They were based on two well-known design patterns: Dependency Injection and Inverse of Control. For experimental purposes we implemented the SURF local interest point detector as a feature extractor and KK-means clustering as indexer.     Using level-2 fuzzy sets to combine uncertainty and imprecision in fuzzy regions

    In many applications, spatial data need to be considered but are prone to uncertainty or imprecision. A fuzzy region - a fuzzy set over a two dimensional domain - allows the representation of such imperfect spatial data. In the original model, points of the fuzzy region where treated independently, making it impossible to model regions where groups of points should be considered as one basic element or subregion. A first extension overcame this, but required points within a group to have the same membership grade. In this contribution, we will extend this further, allowing a fuzzy region to contain subregions in which not all points have the same membership grades. The concept can be used as an underlying model in spatial applications, e.g. websites showing maps and requiring representation of imprecise features or websites with routing functions needing to handle concepts as walking distance or closeby

    Comparison of Latent Semantic Analysis and Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis for Documents Clustering

    In this paper we compare usefulness of statistical techniques of dimensionality reduction for improving clustering of documents in Polish. We start with partitional and agglomerative algorithms applied to Vector Space Model. Then we investigate two transformations: Latent Semantic Analysis and Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis. The obtained results showed advantage of Latent Semantic Analysis technique over probabilistic model. We also analyse time and memory consumption aspects of these transformations and present runtime details for IBM BladeCenter HS21 machine

    Differential Evolution Algorithm in the Construction of Interpretable Classification Models

    In this chapter, the application of a differential evolution-based approach to induce oblique decision trees (DTs) is described. This type of decision trees uses a linear combination of attributes to build oblique hyperplanes dividing the instance space. Oblique decision trees are more compact and accurate than the traditional univariate decision trees. On the other hand, as differential evolution (DE) is an efficient evolutionary algorithm (EA) designed to solve optimization problems with real-valued parameters, and since finding an optimal hyperplane is a hard computing task, this metaheuristic (MH) is chosen to conduct an intelligent search of a near-optimal solution. Two methods are described in this chapter: one implementing a recursive partitioning strategy to find the most suitable oblique hyperplane of each internal node of a decision tree, and the other conducting a global search of a near-optimal oblique decision tree. A statistical analysis of the experimental results suggests that these methods show better performance as decision tree induction procedures in comparison with other supervised learning approaches

    Fast Nonnegative Matrix Factorization Algorithms Using Projected Gradient Approaches for Large-Scale Problems

    Recently, a considerable growth of interest in projected gradient (PG) methods has been observed due to their high efficiency in solving large-scale convex minimization problems subject to linear constraints. Since the minimization problems underlying nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) of large matrices well matches this class of minimization problems, we investigate and test some recent PG methods in the context of their applicability to NMF. In particular, the paper focuses on the following modified methods: projected Landweber, Barzilai-Borwein gradient projection, projected sequential subspace optimization (PSESOP), interior-point Newton (IPN), and sequential coordinate-wise. The proposed and implemented NMF PG algorithms are compared with respect to their performance in terms of signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) and elapsed time, using a simple benchmark of mixed partially dependent nonnegative signals
