    Exploratory study to explore the role of ICT in the process of knowledge management in an Indian business environment

    In the 21st century and the emergence of a digital economy, knowledge and the knowledge base economy are rapidly growing. To effectively be able to understand the processes involved in the creating, managing and sharing of knowledge management in the business environment is critical to the success of an organization. This study builds on the previous research of the authors on the enablers of knowledge management by identifying the relationship between the enablers of knowledge management and the role played by information communication technologies (ICT) and ICT infrastructure in a business setting. This paper provides the findings of a survey collected from the four major Indian cities (Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Villupuram) regarding their views and opinions about the enablers of knowledge management in business setting. A total of 80 organizations participated in the study with 100 participants in each city. The results show that ICT and ICT infrastructure can play a critical role in the creating, managing and sharing of knowledge in an Indian business environment

The outcomes for this study are expected to improve the understanding the enabling factors in implementing mobile KMS in Australian healthcare, as well as provide better guidelines for this process

    The paper examines the advice and support provided by seven major Internet Service Providers in Australia through late 2009 and early 2010 in relation to computer and network security. Previous research has indicated that many end-users will attempt to utilise the support provided by Internet Service Providers as a simple and effective method by which to obtain key information in regards to computer security. This paper demonstrates that in many cases the individuals working at the help desk are either reluctant to provide IT security support or have insufficient skill to provide the correct information

    Atmospheric trace metal deposition from natural and anthropogenic sources in Western Australia

    Aerosols from Western Australia supply micronutrient trace elements including Fe into the western shelf of Australia and further afield into the Southern and Indian Oceans. However, regional observations of atmospheric trace metal deposition are limited. Here, we applied a series of leaching experiments followed by total analysis of bulk aerosol samples to a unique time-series of aerosol samples collected in Western Australia to determine atmospheric concentrations and solubilities of Fe and V, Mn, Co, Zn, and Pb. Positive matrix factorisation analysis indicated that mineral dust, biomass burning particulates, sea salt, and industrial emissions were the major types of aerosols. Overall, natural sources dominated Fe deposition. Higher atmospheric concentrations of mineral dust (sixfold) and biomass burning emissions were observed in warmer compared to cooler months. The fraction of labile Fe (0.6–6.0%) was lower than that reported for other regions of Australia. Bushfire emissions are a temporary source of labile Fe and may cause a peak in the delivery of its more easily available forms to the ocean. Increased labile Fe deposition may result in higher ocean productivity in regions where Fe is limiting, and the effect of aerosol deposition on ocean productivity in this region requires further study

    Detecting Slow DDos Attacks on Mobile Devices

    Denial of service attacks, distributed denial of service attacks and reflector attacks are well known and documented events. More recently these attacks have been directed at game stations and mobile communication devices as strategies for disrupting communication. In this paper we ask, How can slow DDos attacks be detected? The similarity metric is adopted and applied for potential application. A short review of previous literature on attacks and prevention methodologies is provided and strategies are discussed. An innovative attack detection method is introduced and the processes and procedures are summarized into an investigation process model. The advantages and benefits of applying the metric are demonstrated and the importance of trace back preparation discussed

    Long term fine aerosols at the Cape Grim global baseline station: 1998 to 2016

    Fine aerosol measurements have been undertaken at the Cape Grim global baseline station since 1992. Ion beam analysis techniques were then used to determine the elemental composition of the samples from which source fingerprints can be determined. In this study six source fingerprints were identified to contribute to the measurements of PM2.5 at Cape Grim (from 1998 to 2016); fresh sea salt (57%), secondary sulfate and nitrates (14%), smoke (13%), aged sea salt (the product of NaCl reactions with SO2; 12%), soil dust (2.4%) and industrial metals (1.5%). Back trajectory analysis showed that local Tasmanian sources of soil dust contributed to the high soil dust measurements. High measurements of secondary aerosols were recorded when air masses were arriving from the Australian mainland, in the direction of the Victorian power stations. When air masses were arriving from the baseline sector, the maximum concentration of aged sea salt was 1.3 μg/m3, compared to overall maximum of 4.9 μg/m3. For secondary sulfates and nitrates the maximum concentrations were 2.5 and 7.5 μg/m3 from the baseline sector and overall, respectively. While measurements at Cape Grim can be affected from long range transport from mainland Australia and some local Tasmanian sources, the average concentrations of anthropogenic sources are still considerably lower than those measured at more populated areas. For example, at Lucas Heights (located south-west of the Sydney central business district, with little local sources) the average concentrations of secondary sulfates/nitrates and aged sea air were 1.4 and 1.0 μg/m3, respectively; compared to average concentrations of 0.8 and 0.6 μg/m3, at Cape Grim. The average concentrations of smoke were compatible at the two sites. The impact of primary aerosols from vehicle exhaust at Cape Grim was limited and no corresponding fingerprint was resolved.Crown Copyright © 2017 Published by Elsevier Lt

    Rethinking english language support : reflections from chinese international students on communicating orally in english in the study abroad context

    Australian universities are currently emphasizing such graduate qualities as English language proficiency. However, this can be problematic for many international students who may still be struggling to communicate orally in English while participating in their chosen course of study. Indeed, the English language proficiency of international students has often received negative attention from the Australian media, employers, and academics. Several government reviews have recommended ongoing English language support for international students that extends beyond existing English language entry requirements, English Academic Preparation programs, and Post-entry Language Assessments. At the same time, there has been a critique of responses to these issues which focus on language proficiency—and simply place the onus on international students to increase their English language proficiency—without taking issues of intercultural communicative competence into account, along with calls for institutional frameworks to better support student experience. This thesis is one contribution to this debate, supported and informed by an exploration of lived experiences of Chinese students engaging with oral English language use and other supports. Not only are Chinese students the largest cohort of international students in Australia, but English education in China also does not appear to prepare them effectively to communicate orally in English. Very different sociocultural backgrounds can also make it difficult for this cohort to engage both academically and socially in Australian higher education. These issues comprise road blockers that can limit English language practice opportunities and negatively affect academic success. iii This thesis shines a light on this cohort’s oral English language experiences in the study abroad context via engagement of Max van Manen’s (1990, 2014) frameworks for phenomenologically oriented qualitative research. Drawing on the lived experiences of Chinese students and a critical review of the regulatory frameworks that inform sectoral and institutional English language proficiency models, this thesis argues for an English language proficiency support framework that integrates insights from intercultural communicative competence into oral English language proficiency as well as the development of curriculum, course delivery, and assessments.Doctor of Philosoph
