    Modal Analysis of Blood Flow in Brain Aneurysms

    The evolution of blood flow is vital in understanding the pathogenesis of brain aneurysms. Several past studies have shown evidence for a turbulent inflow jet at the aneurysm neck. Although there is a great need for analyzing inflow jet dynamics in clinical practice, data summarized in noninvasive modalities such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging or Computed Tomography are usually limited by spatial and temporal resolutions, and thus cannot account for the hemodynamics. In this paper, Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) is used to pinpoint the dominant modes of the inflow jet in patient-specific models of sidewall aneurysms. This paper aims to prove that the dynamic modes are inflow jet interaction with the distal wall in addition to the hemodynamics of the parent artery. Our work indicates that DMD is an essential tool for analyzing blood flow patterns of brain aneurysms and is a promising tool to be used in in vivo context

    Volumetric velocimetry for fluid flows

    In recent years, several techniques have been introduced that are capable of extracting 3D three-component velocity fields in fluid flows. Fast-paced developments in both hardware and processing algorithms have generated a diverse set of methods, with a growing range of applications in flow diagnostics. This has been further enriched by the increasingly marked trend of hybridization, in which the differences between techniques are fading. In this review, we carry out a survey of the prominent methods, including optical techniques and approaches based on medical imaging. An overview of each is given with an example of an application from the literature, while focusing on their respective strengths and challenges. A framework for the evaluation of velocimetry performance in terms of dynamic spatial range is discussed, along with technological trends and emerging strategies to exploit 3D data. While critical challenges still exist, these observations highlight how volumetric techniques are transforming experimental fluid mechanics, and that the possibilities they offer have just begun to be explored.SD was partially supported under Grant No. DPI2016-79401-R funded by the Spanish State Research Agency (SRA) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).     Large Eddy Simulation and Analysis of Shear Flows in Complex Geometries

    In the present work, large eddy simulation is used to numerically investigate two types of shear flows in complex geometries, (i) a novel momentum driven countercurrent shear flow in dump geometry and (ii) a film cooling flow (inclined jet in crossflow). Verification of subgrid scale model is done through comparisons with measurements for a turbulent flow over back step, present cases of counter current shear and film cooling flow. In the first part, a three dimensional stability analysis is conducted for countercurrent shear flow using Dynamic mode decomposition and spectral analysis. Kelvin-Helmholtz is identified as primary instability mechanism and observed as global mode at a specific parameter. Mechanism of global mode synchronization over distinct spatial location is studied. In the second part, the flow physics of film cooling flows is analysed. The origin, evolution of various coherent flow structures and their role in film cooling heat transfer is studied based on detailed flow visualization. Further, the contribution of coherent structures in film cooling heat transfer and mixing is studied through modal analysis. Low frequency modes are found to have large contribution in cooling surface adiabatic temperature fluctuation while high frequency modes play larger role in bulk mixing. Finally, a new contoured crater shape is developed and shown to have improved performance at shallow depth compared to earlier designs
