    External Trade, Tourism and Economic Integration in Latin America

    We analyse the positive effects of industry, external trade and tourism on economic development, with a comparative study of twenty-two Latin American countries and an especial reference to the case of MERCOSUR and Andean Community. Besides tourism the industrial evolution is also very important to improve the development of services through some intersectoral relations. Our econometric model shows an important positive impact on the services sector of the industry and the tourism, which is included in the exports of the sector services.

    From the early seismic records various Japanese scientists found that the microseisms which are produced by traffic, industry, and meteorological conditions, as storms and surf, show certain prevailing periods which are different in different localities. Omori and Kikuchi have especially investigated this problem. Kikuchi expressed his opinion that the prevailing periods constituted the free periods of the ground and their harmonics. The problem of the connection between periods of microseisms produced by local causes and the free periods of the ground has been investigated frequently since. O. Geussenhainer in his investigation of microseisms in Göttingen with periods between 5 and 9 seconds found that they change gradually in the course of time in the vertical component, but that in the horizontal component periods of 6, 7.5, and 9 seconds prevail.     The author has identified the following significant results. The boundaries of application of ERTS-1 and aircraft data are established for St. Thomas harbor within which useful water quality information can be obtained. In situ physical, chemical, and biological water quality and benthic data were collected. Moored current meters were employed. Optical measurements of solar irradiance, color test panel radiance and water absorption were taken. Procedures for correlating in situ optical, biological, and chemical data with underflight aircraft I2S data and ERTS-1 MSS scanner data are presented. Comparison of bulk and precision CCT computer printout data for this application is made, and a simple method for geometrically locating bulk data individual pixels based on land-water interface is described. ERTS spacecraft data and I2S aircraft imagery are correlated with optical in situ measurements of the harbor water, with the aircraft green photographic and ERTS-1 MSS-4 bands being the most useful. The biological pigments correlate inversely with the optical data for inshore areas and directly further seaward. Automated computer data processing facilitated analysis

    The water footprint concept has been developed in order to have an indicator of water use in relation to consumption of people. The water footprint of a country is defined as the volume of water needed for the production of the goods and services consumed by the inhabitants of the country. Closely linked to the water footprint concept is the virtual water concept. Virtual water is defined as the volume of water required to produce a commodity or service. International trade of commodities implies flows of virtual water over large distances. The water footprint of a nation can be assessed by taking the use of domestic water resources, subtract the virtual water flow that leaves the country and add the virtual water flow that enters the country. The internal water footprint of a nation is the volume of water used from domestic water resources to produce the goods and services consumed by the inhabitants of the country. The external water footprint of a country is the volume of water used in other countries to produce goods and services imported and consumed by the inhabitants of the country. The study aims to calculate the water footprint for each nation of the world for the period 1997-2001
