Racism and anti-racism in Europe: a critical analysis of concepts and frameworks

    No full text
The targets and expressions of racism vary across Europe. This article discusses the relevance of different descriptions and analyses of racism despite the different terms used in different countries such as ‘ethnic minority’, ‘foreigner’ or ‘black’ and different interpretations of which differences matter. It shows the significance of a cross-national European perspective on racism. There are important convergences across European countries in the discourses and practices of racism, particularly the distinction between ‘useful’ and ‘abusive’ migrants. A cross-European perspective can be an important inspiration for anti-racist struggles

Galaxy Cluster Scaling Relations between Bolocam Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect and Chandra X-ray Measurements

We present scaling relations between the integrated Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (SZE) signal, YSZY_{\rm SZ}, its X-ray analogue, YXMgasTXY_{\rm X}\equiv M_{\rm gas}T_{\rm X}, and total mass, MtotM_{\rm tot}, for the 45 galaxy clusters in the Bolocam X-ray-SZ (BOXSZ) sample. All parameters are integrated within r2500r_{2500}. Y2500Y_{2500} values are measured using SZE data collected with Bolocam, operating at 140 GHz at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). The temperature, TXT_{\rm X}, and mass, Mgas,2500M_{\rm gas,2500}, of the intracluster medium are determined using X-ray data collected with Chandra, and MtotM_{\rm tot} is derived from MgasM_{\rm gas} assuming a constant gas mass fraction. Our analysis accounts for several potential sources of bias, including: selection effects, contamination from radio point sources, and the loss of SZE signal due to noise filtering and beam-smoothing effects. We measure the Y2500Y_{2500}--YXY_{\rm X} scaling to have a power-law index of 0.84±0.070.84\pm0.07, and a fractional intrinsic scatter in Y2500Y_{2500} of (21±7)%(21\pm7)\% at fixed YXY_{\rm X}, both of which are consistent with previous analyses. We also measure the scaling between Y2500Y_{2500} and M2500M_{2500}, finding a power-law index of 1.06±0.121.06\pm0.12 and a fractional intrinsic scatter in Y2500Y_{2500} at fixed mass of (25±9)%(25\pm9)\%. While recent SZE scaling relations using X-ray mass proxies have found power-law indices consistent with the self-similar prediction of 5/3, our measurement stands apart by differing from the self-similar prediction by approximately 5σ\sigma. Given the good agreement between the measured Y2500Y_{2500}--YXY_{\rm X} scalings, much of this discrepancy appears to be caused by differences in the calibration of the X-ray mass proxies adopted for each particular analysis.Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, accepted by ApJ 04/11/2015. Did Enron Pillage California?

    Get PDF
Revelations this summer about Enron Energy Services' byzantine electricity-trading practices have fueled charges that merchant power producers and traders artificially engineered the California electricity crisis of 2000-01. A careful examination of the suspect trading practices, however, reveals that there's less to those charges than meets the eye. The trading strategies in question all involved the pursuit of arbitrage opportunities, which arise when price discrepancies exist for a commodity in different locations or time periods. Exploiting arbitrage opportunities generally enhances economic efficiency by ensuring that electricity is reallocated where it is needed most. While some of the arbitrage opportunities were artificially manufactured by the companies themselves (in ways that may or may not have violated the law), most of them arose as a natural consequence of the market structure imposed by the California political system. In any case, it's unclear whether the trading strategies in question actually served to increase prices on balance. Even economists who are convinced that they did contribute to the increase in electricity prices attribute only about 5 percent of the alleged overcharges to the strategies at issue. Most of the price spike of 2000-01 is explained by drought, increased natural gas prices, the escalating cost of nitrogen oxide emissions credits, increases in consumer demand stemming from a hot summer and then a cold winter, and retail price controls that prevented market signals from disciplining producers or consumers. The price collapse in the summer of 2001 stemmed from a reversal of those conditions, not the imposition of federal price controls or the elimination of the trading practices in question

AMiBA: scaling relations between the integrated Compton-y and X-ray derived temperature, mass, and luminosity

We investigate the scaling relations between the X-ray and the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (SZE) properties of clusters of galaxies, using data taken during 2007 by the Y.T. Lee Array for Microwave Background Anisotropy (AMiBA) at 94 GHz for the six clusters A1689, A1995, A2142, A2163, A2261, and A2390. The scaling relations relate the integrated Compton-y parameter Y_{2500} to the X-ray derived gas temperature T_{e}, total mass M_{2500}, and bolometric luminosity L_X within r_{2500}. Our results for the power-law index and normalization are both consistent with the self-similar model and other studies in the literature except for the Y_{2500}-L_X relation, for which a physical explanation is given though further investigation may be still needed. Our results not only provide confidence for the AMiBA project but also support our understanding of galaxy clusters.Comment: Accepted by ApJ; 8 pages, 3 figures, 5 table

Flow structure in a model of aircraft trailing vortices

    Get PDF
We consider a model of incompressible trailing vortices consisting of an array of counter-rotating structures in a doubly periodic domain, infinite in the vertical direction. The two-dimensional vortex array of Mallier and Maslowe is combined with an axial velocity profile chosen proportional to the initial axial vorticity to provide an initial condition for the vortex wake. This base flow is a weak solution of the steady Euler equations with three velocity components that are functions of two spatial coordinates, thus allowing its linear stability properties to be investigated. These are used to interpret several stages in the development of vortex structure observed in fully three-dimensional direct numerical simulation (DNS) at Reynolds numbers Gamma/(2pinu)=[script O](1000). For sufficiently high axial velocity, its effect can be seen, in that each vortex in the linear array first develops helical structures before undergoing a period of relaminarization. At later times the more slowly growing cooperative elliptical instabilities become apparent, but the helical structure persists and the observed vortical structures remain coherent for longer periods than in the absence of axial velocity. Using the stretched-vortex subgrid model, large-eddy simulation runs are performed at large Reynolds numbers and a mixing transition identified at about Re=1–2×10^4. Similar phenomena are observed in these simulations as are seen in the DNS

Follow-Up Study of Emotionally Disturbed Children to Assess Community Services Available After Treatment

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research project would be to discover, by means of a follow-up study, the kinds of community services most needed for children returning to the community from residential treatment centres for the emotionally disturbed, in their attempts to resume normal and improved levels of functioning, and to maintain this improvement, if not in fact stabilizing and bettering their adjustment still further
