Unconventional Charge Ordering in Na0.70CoO2 below 300 K
We present the results of measurements of the dc-magnetic susceptibility
chi(T) and the 23Na-NMR response of Na_{0.70}CoO_{2} at temperatures between 50
and 340 K. The chi(T) data suggest that for T > 75 K, the Co ions adopt an
effective configuration of Co^{3.4+}. The 23Na-NMR response reveals pronounced
anomalies near 250 and 295 K, but no evidence for magnetic phase transitions is
found in chi(T). Our data suggest the onset of a dramatic change in the Co
3d-electron spin dynamics at 295 K. This process is completed at 230 K. Our
results maybe interpreted as evidence for either a tendency to electron
localization or an unconventional charge-density wave phenomenon within the
cobalt oxide layer, CoO_2, 3d electron system near room temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, re-submitted to Physical Review Letters. The

Spin polarization of the magnetic spiral in NaCu_2O_2, as seen by NMR
The incommensurate (IC) spin ordering in quasi-1D edge-shared cuprate
NaCu_2O_2 has been studied by ^{23}Na nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy
in an external magnetic field near 6 Tesla applied along the main
crystallographic axes. The NMR lineshape evolution above and below T_N\approx12
K yields a clear signature of an IC static modulation of the local magnetic
field consistent with a Cu^{2+} spin spiral polarized in the bc-plane rather
than in the ab-plane as reported from earlier neutron diffraction data.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
23Na NMR study of non-superconducting double-layer hydrate NaxCoO2.yH2O
We report 23Na NMR studies of the polycrystalline samples of double-layer
hydrated cobalt oxides NaxCoO2.yH2O (x ~ 0.35 and y ~ 1.3) with the
superconducting transition temperatures Tc < 1.8K and ~4.5K, and the dehydrated
NaxCoO2 (x ~ 0.35). The hyperfine field and the electric field gradient at the
Na sites in the non-hydrated Na0.7CoO2 and the dehydrated Na0.35CoO2 are found
to be significantly reduced by the hydration, which indicates a strong
shielding effect of the intercalated water molecules on the Na sites. The
temperature dependence of 23 Na nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/23T1 of
the non-superconducting double-layer hydrate NaxCoO2.yH2O is found to be
similar to that of the non-hydrated Na0.7CoO2, whose spin dynamics is
understood by A-type (intra-layer ferromagnetic and inter-layer
antiferromagnetic) spin fluctuations. The superconducting phase is located
close to the quantum critical point with the A-type magnetic instability.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
A low-dimensional spin S = 1/2 system at the quantum critical limit: Na2V2O7
We report the results of measurements of the dc-susceptibility and the
23Na-NMR response of Na2V2O7, a recently synthesized, non metallic low
dimensional spin system. Our results indicate that upon reducing the
temperature to below 100 K, the V^{4+} moments are gradually quenched, leaving
only one moment out of 9 active. The NMR data reveal a phase transition at very
low temperatures. With decreasing applied field H, the critical temperature
shifts towards T = 0 K, suggesting that Na2V2O7 may be regarded as an insulator
reaching a quantum critical point at H = 0.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
NMR studies of Successive Phase Transitions in Na0.5CoO2 and K0.5CoO2
59Co- and 23Na-NMR measurements have been carried out on polycrystalline and
c-axis aligned samples of Na0.5CoO2, which exhibits successive transitions at
temperatures T = 87 K (= Tc1) and T = 53 K (= Tc2). 59Co-NMR has also been
carried out on c-axis aligned crystallites of K0.5CoO2 with similar successive
transitions at Tc1 ~ 60 K and Tc2 ~ 20 K. For Na0.5CoO2, two sets of three NMR
lines of 23Na nuclei explained by considering the quadrupolar frequencies nuQ
~1.32 and 1.40 MHz have been observed above Tc1, as is expected from the
crystalline structure. Rather complicated but characteristic variation of the
23Na-NMR spectra has been observed with varying T through the transition
temperatures, and the internal fields at two crystallographically distinct Na
sites are discussed on the basis of the magnetic structures reported
previously. The internal fields at two distinct Co sites observed below Tc1 and
the 591/T1-T curves of Na0.5CoO2 and K0.5CoO2 are also discussed in a
comparative way.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, submitted to J. Phys. Soc. Jpn, correction is
