DMN for Data Quality Measurement and Assessment
Data Quality assessment is aimed at evaluating the suitability
of a dataset for an intended task. The extensive literature on data
quality describes the various methodologies for assessing data quality
by means of data profiling techniques of the whole datasets. Our investigations
are aimed to provide solutions to the need of automatically
assessing the level of quality of the records of a dataset, where data profiling
tools do not provide an adequate level of information. As most of
the times, it is easier to describe when a record has quality enough than
calculating a qualitative indicator, we propose a semi-automatically business
rule-guided data quality assessment methodology for every record.
This involves first listing the business rules that describe the data (data
requirements), then those describing how to produce measures (business
rules for data quality measurements), and finally, those defining how to
assess the level of data quality of a data set (business rules for data quality
assessment). The main contribution of this paper is the adoption of
the OMG standard DMN (Decision Model and Notation) to support the
data quality requirement description and their automatic assessment by
using the existing DMN engines.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología RTI2018-094283-B-C33Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología RTI2018-094283-B-C31European Regional Development Fund SBPLY/17/180501/00029
Integrating the common variability language with multilanguage annotations for web engineering
Web applications development involves managing a high diversity of files and resources like code, pages or style sheets, implemented in different languages. To deal with the automatic generation of
custom-made configurations of web applications, industry usually adopts annotation-based approaches even though the majority of studies encourage the use of composition-based approaches to implement
Software Product Lines. Recent work tries to combine both approaches to get the complementary benefits. However, technological companies are reticent to adopt new development paradigms
such as feature-oriented programming or aspect-oriented programming.
Moreover, it is extremely difficult, or even impossible, to apply
these programming models to web applications, mainly because of
their multilingual nature, since their development involves multiple
types of source code (Java, Groovy, JavaScript), templates (HTML,
Markdown, XML), style sheet files (CSS and its variants, such as
SCSS), and other files (JSON, YML, shell scripts). We propose to
use the Common Variability Language as a composition-based approach
and integrate annotations to manage fine grained variability
of a Software Product Line for web applications. In this paper, we (i)
show that existing composition and annotation-based approaches,
including some well-known combinations, are not appropriate to
model and implement the variability of web applications; and (ii)
present a combined approach that effectively integrates annotations
into a composition-based approach for web applications. We implement
our approach and show its applicability with an industrial
real-world system.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech
Augmented Business Process Management Systems: A Research Manifesto
Augmented Business Process Management Systems (ABPMSs) are an emerging class
of process-aware information systems that draws upon trustworthy AI technology.
An ABPMS enhances the execution of business processes with the aim of making
these processes more adaptable, proactive, explainable, and context-sensitive.
This manifesto presents a vision for ABPMSs and discusses research challenges
that need to be surmounted to realize this vision. To this end, we define the
concept of ABPMS, we outline the lifecycle of processes within an ABPMS, we
discuss core characteristics of an ABPMS, and we derive a set of challenges to
realize systems with these characteristics.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figur

DEVELOPMENT OF A MEASUREMENT SCALE FOR BUSINESS PROCESS STANDARDIZATION
Process-oriented companies face the dichotomy of process standardization versus process diversity. On the one hand, multinational companies try to realize returns of scale by standardization. On the other hand, markets require businesses to adapt to local needs and government regulations. As of to-day, there is no framework available to measure the degree of process standardization. This is both a problem for companies that want to assess their degree of standardization as well as for research that aims to investigate standardization and its connection with other concepts. In this paper, we address this research gap from the perspective of scale development. We utilize a well-acknowledged method for devising a measurement instrument to specifically and directly measure the degree of standardiza-tion in business processes. Various application scenarios and future research areas are pointed out
WeaFQAs: A Software Product Line Approach for Customizing and Weaving Efficient Functional Quality Attributes
Measuring the Cognitive Complexity in the Comprehension of Modular Process Models
Modularization in process models is a method to cope with the inherent complexity in such models (e.g., model size reduction). Modularization is capable to increase the quality, the ease of reuse, and the scalability of process models. Prior conducted research studied the effects of modular process models to enhance their comprehension. However, the effects of modularization on cognitive factors during process model comprehension are less understood so far. Therefore, this paper presents the results of two exploratory studies (i.e., a survey research study with N = 95 participants; a follow-up eye tracking study with N = 19 participants), in which three types of modularization (i.e., horizontal, vertical, orthogonal) were applied to process models expressed in terms of the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) 2.0. Further, the effects of modularization on the cognitive load, the level of acceptability, and the performance in process model comprehension were investigated. In general, the results revealed that participants were confronted with challenges during the comprehension of modularized process models. Further, performance in the comprehension of modularized process models showed only a few significant differences, however, the results obtained regarding the cognitive load revealed that the complexity and concept of modularization in process models were misjudged initially. The insights unraveled that the attitude towards the application and the behavioral intention to apply modularization in process model is still not clear. In this context, horizontal modularization appeared to be the best comprehensible modularization approach leading to a more fine-grained comprehension of respective process models. The findings indicate that alterations in modular process models (e.g., change in the representation) are important to foster and enable their comprehension. Finally, based on our results, implications for research and practice as well as directions for future work are discussed in this paper
A Vision for Flexibile GLSP-based Web Modeling Tools
In the past decade, the modeling community has produced many feature-rich
modeling editors and tool prototypes not only for modeling standards but
particularly also for many domain-specific languages. More recently, however,
web-based modeling tools have started to become increasingly popular for
visualizing and editing models adhering to such languages in the industry. This
new generation of modeling tools is built with web technologies and offers much
more flexibility when it comes to their user experience, accessibility, reuse,
and deployment options. One of the technologies behind this new generation of
tools is the Graphical Language Server Platform (GLSP), an open-source
client-server framework hosted under the Eclipse foundation, which allows tool
providers to build modern diagram editors for modeling tools that run in the
browser or can be easily integrated into IDEs such as Eclipse, VS Code, or
Eclipse Theia. In this paper, we describe our vision of more flexible modeling
tools which is based on our experiences from developing several GLSP-based
modeling tools. With that, we aim at sparking a new line of research and
innovation in the modeling community for modeling tool development practices
and to explore opportunities, advantages, or limitations of web-based modeling
tools, as well as bridge the gap between scientific tool prototypes and
industrial tools being used in practice.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Software product line engineering: a practical experience
The lack of mature tool support is one of the main reasons that make the industry to be reluctant to adopt Software Product Line (SPL) approaches. A number of systematic literature reviews exist that identify the main characteristics offered by existing tools and the SPL phases in which they can be applied. However, these reviews do not really help to understand if those tools are offering what is really needed to apply SPLs to complex projects. These studies are mainly based on information extracted from the tool documentation or published papers. In this paper, we follow a different approach, in which we firstly identify those characteristics that are currently essential for the development of an SPL, and secondly analyze whether the tools provide or not support for those characteristics. We focus on those tools that satisfy certain selection criteria (e.g., they can be downloaded and are ready to be used). The paper presents a state of practice with the availability and usability of the existing tools for SPL, and defines different roadmaps that allow carrying out a complete SPL process with the existing tool support.Universidad de Málaga.
