A Framework for Generating Diverse Haskell-IO Exercise Tasks
We present the design of a framework to automatically generate a large range
of different exercise tasks on Haskell-I/O programming. Automatic task
generation is useful in many different ways. Manual task creating is a time
consuming process, so automating it saves valuable time for the educator.
Together with an automated assessment system automatic task generation allows
students to practice with as many exercise tasks as needed. Additionally, each
student can be given a slightly different version of a task, reducing issues
regarding plagiarism that arise naturally in an e-learning environment. Our
task generation is centered around a specification language for I/O behavior
that we developed in an earlier work. The task generation framework, an EDSL in
Haskell, provides powerful primitives for the creation of various artifacts,
including program code, from specifications. We will not go into detail on the
technical realization of these primitives. This article instead showcases how
such artifacts and the framework as a whole can be used to build exercise tasks
templates that can then be (randomly) instantiated.Comment: Part of WFLP 2020 pre-proceeding
Supporting Co-Regulation and Motivation in Learning Programming in Online Classrooms
Self-regulation of learning in programming has been extensively investigated, emphasising an individual's metacognitive and motivational regulation components. However, learning often happens in socially situated contexts, and little emphasis has been paid to studying social modes of regulation in programming. We designed Thyone, a collaborative Jupyter Notebook extension to support learners' programming regulation in an online classroom context with the overall aim to foster their intrinsic motivation toward programming. Thyone's salient features - Flowchart, Discuss and Share Cell - incorporate affordances for learners to co-regulate their learning and drive their motivation. In an exploratory quasi-experimental study, we investigated learners' engagement with Thyone's features and assessed its influence on their learning motivation in an introductory programming course. We found that Thyone facilitated the co-regulation of programming learning and that the users' engagement with Thyone appeared to positively influence components of their motivation: interest, autonomy, and relatedness. Our results inform the design of technological interventions to support co-regulation in programming learning
Impact of Posting Teaching Content Online in a French Course for Beginners
[[abstract]]Nowadays, a growing number of instructors use information and communications technology (ICT) inside and outside the classroom to teach all kinds of programs, including language courses. The instructor used a traditional way of teaching (lecturing, text-book, conversation, no technology in the classroom, no social network) during the first semester of academic year 2013-2014 (September-January) in a French course for beginners in a Taiwan public university. During the second semester (February-June 2014), the teacher added the use of multimedia and Facebook to teach the same students. They joined a Facebook learning group, which they could access anytime during the second semester; they could notably post, view posts, like, and comment in French and sometimes English (no Chinese). This study analyzes data from the first and second semester to measure students' learning progress and how the group might influence their motivation and change their behavior. Students were expected not only to improve their reading and writing skills, but to increase their knowledge of French culture.[[notice]]補正完
Role of ADRI model in teaching and assessing novice programmers
In this research, an ADRI approach was introduced in the teaching and learning process of an introductory programming course. The result shows that the ADRI approach impacted positively on the students learning outcomes. The ADRI approach not only reduced the failure rate but also improved student’s retention in the course
The moderating effects of innovative work behaviour towards performance factors among entrepreneurship lecturer in Malaysia polytechnic
This study designed to determine the student evaluations to improve teaching ability performance among entrepreneurship lecturers in polytechnic. It used explanatory research to provide evidence on relationship of effective teaching factors to entrepreneurship lecturer performance under moderating effects of innovation work behaviour. The design of this study is based on survey method using questionnaire and using IBM SPSS 22.0 and Smart SEM-PLS 3.2.4 software to analyse the premier data from respondents. The population of the study consists of engineering students who take the entrepreneurship subject which involves 375 respondents from 33 polytechnics in Malaysia. This involves constructing and testing eight research hypotheses to establish the theory's worth and its ability to predict about social phenomena.. The analysis answered eight research questions and achieve objectives based on the problem statement. Results of the study found six out of eight hypotheses are supported while two hypotheses are not supported. Innovation method in teaching, educational technology tools, and lecturers' social integration showing the direct relationship with the entrepreneurship lecturer performance except for lecturers' learning capabilities. Innovative work behaviour as a moderating variable affecting the relationships between innovation method in teaching, educational technology tools, and lecturers' social integration. This study resulted in a theoretical framework that contributes to the knowledge of the effectiveness of teaching among entrepreneurs educator in improving the ability to achieve the mission and vision of institutions whereas to achieve the goal of job creator among engineering students. The study concludes with a discussion of the theoretical implications, practical and methodological, limitations of the research and future research recommendations
