LUXOR: An FPGA Logic Cell Architecture for Efficient Compressor Tree Implementations
We propose two tiers of modifications to FPGA logic cell architecture to
deliver a variety of performance and utilization benefits with only minor area
overheads. In the irst tier, we augment existing commercial logic cell
datapaths with a 6-input XOR gate in order to improve the expressiveness of
each element, while maintaining backward compatibility. This new architecture
is vendor-agnostic, and we refer to it as LUXOR. We also consider a secondary
tier of vendor-speciic modifications to both Xilinx and Intel FPGAs, which we
refer to as X-LUXOR+ and I-LUXOR+ respectively. We demonstrate that compressor
tree synthesis using generalized parallel counters (GPCs) is further improved
with the proposed modifications. Using both the Intel adaptive logic module and
the Xilinx slice at the 65nm technology node for a comparative study, it is
shown that the silicon area overhead is less than 0.5% for LUXOR and 5-6% for
LUXOR+, while the delay increments are 1-6% and 3-9% respectively. We
demonstrate that LUXOR can deliver an average reduction of 13-19% in logic
utilization on micro-benchmarks from a variety of domains.BNN benchmarks
benefit the most with an average reduction of 37-47% in logic utilization,
which is due to the highly-efficient mapping of the XnorPopcount operation on

Recommendation for a holistic secure embedded ISA extension
Embedded systems are a cornerstone of the ongoing digitization of our society, ranging from expanding markets around IoT and smart-X devices over to sensors in autonomous driving, medical equipment or critical infrastructures. Since a vast amount of embedded systems are safety-critical (e.g., due to their operation site), security is a necessity for their operation. However, unlike mobile, desktop, and server systems, where adversaries typically only act have remote access, embedded systems typically face attackers with physical access. Thus embedded system require an additional set of defense techniques, preferably leveraging hardware acceleration to minimize the impact on their stringent operation constraints. Over the last decade numerous defenses have been explored, however, they have often been analyzed in isolation.
In this work, we first systematically analyze the state of the art in defenses for both software exploitation and fault attacks on embedded systems. We then carefully design a holistic instruction set extension to augment the RISC-V instruction set architecture with instructions to deter against the threats analyzed in this work. Moreover we implement our design using the gem5 simulator system and a binary translation approach to arm software with our instruction set extension. Finally, we evaluate performance overhead on the MiBench2 benchmark suite. Our evaluation demonstrates a ROM overhead increase of 20% to defeat the aforementioned attacks
Precision Departure Release Capability (PDRC) Technology Description
After takeoff, aircraft must merge into en route (Center) airspace traffic flows which may be subject to constraints that create localized demand-capacity imbalances. When demand exceeds capacity, Traffic Management Coordinators (TMCs) often use tactical departure scheduling to manage the flow of departures into the constrained Center traffic flow. Tactical departure scheduling usually involves use of a Call for Release (CFR) procedure wherein the Tower must call the Center TMC to coordinate a release time prior to allowing the flight to depart. In present-day operations release times are computed by the Center Traffic Management Advisor (TMA) decision support tool based upon manual estimates of aircraft ready time verbally communicated from the Tower to the Center. The TMA-computed release is verbally communicated from the Center back to the Tower where it is relayed to the Local controller as a release window that is typically three minutes wide. The Local controller will manage the departure to meet the coordinated release time window. Manual ready time prediction and verbal release time coordination are labor intensive and prone to inaccuracy. Also, use of release time windows adds uncertainty to the tactical departure process. Analysis of more than one million flights from January 2011 indicates that a significant number of tactically scheduled aircraft missed their en route slot due to ready time prediction uncertainty. Uncertainty in ready time estimates may result in missed opportunities to merge into constrained en route flows and lead to lost throughput. Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) plans call for development of Tower automation systems capable of computing surface trajectory-based ready time estimates. NASA has developed the Precision Departure Release Capability (PDRC) concept that uses this technology to improve tactical departure scheduling by automatically communicating surface trajectory-based ready time predictions to the Center scheduling tool. The PDRC concept also incorporates earlier NASA and FAA research into automation-assisted CFR coordination. The PDRC concept helps reduce uncertainty by automatically communicating coordinated release times with seconds-level precision enabling TMCs to work with target times rather than windows. NASA has developed a PDRC prototype system that integrates the Center's TMA system with a research prototype Tower decision support tool. A two-phase field evaluation was conducted at NASA's North Texas Research Station (NTX) in Dallas-Fort Worth. The field evaluation validated the PDRC concept and demonstrated reduced release time uncertainty while being used for tactical departure scheduling of more than 230 operational flights over 29 weeks of operations.
