An essay on some aspects of medicine in Malta between 1934 - 1990

It has been wisely said that experience is not what happens to you but what you do with what happens to you. Especially the young tend to sneer at one who is always ready to justify whatever he says or does by saying that is what experience has taught him. This is hardly fair since he who quotes his experience is really only offering to present his listener with what he has acquired by his own exertions. In this essay I will in many ways offer to the reader what experience has taught me for which gratitude should be a fit reward. It is clear that what the "Medical Association of Malta" requires is an essay, qualifying this only by saying that "authors may choose any subject" as long as it has a medical variant, which is rather broad as a term of reference. It seems to me this could suggest the description of some clinical condition or procedure, of some technique or some special therapeutic measure. It could also mean presuming the eassayist is a medical man that the writer would be describing in biographic terms some part of his life which he had assumed to be of medical interest. Since I am one of the oldest doctors living in Malta and since I have had a varied life it is along these lines that this essay will be cast.peer-reviewe

Systems in Play: Simon Nicholson\u27s Design 12 Course, University of California, Berkeley, 1966

In 1966, British artist, designer and educator Simon Nicholson (1934–1990) offered a lower division course, Design 12, at the College of Environmental Design, UC Berkeley. Controversially, Nicholson promoted play as the principal method of design and invited children to assess students’ projects on the Berkeley campus and in local schools, parks, playgrounds and hospitals. This article presents Design 12 as an important example of environmental design pedagogy in the USA, which uniquely attempted to synthesize British post-war constructivism with ‘design science’ and adventure play. The result was a course that placed play at the centre of design pedagogy, where it could combine intuition with systems building to promote ‘involved science’ and co-construction

Between Contingency and Necessity of Human Action. Are We Free in our Choices?

    Get PDF
The point of departure of this paper is the characterization of human action as contingent or necessary (obligatory). The key question concerns the place for choice in the human action, i.e. are we free in our choices? Thus, the aim of this paper is to search for the answer to the question concerning human freedom and free will. In searching for the answer to this controversial question, consideration is focused on the cognitive structure of human beings. The research refers to Roman Ingarden’s conception of the human being as a relatively isolated system of a higher order, contained in a compound hierarchical structure. In this way, the argumentation for the place of free will is supported by the structure of the human being, and joins both the ontological and the epistemic aspects. In consequence, methodologically they are treated as a primary to inquiries into the theory of action on one side, and into the biological approach of cognitive science on the other

Electrodynamic coupling of electric dipole emitters to a fluctuating mode density within a nano-cavity

We investigate the impact of rotational diffusion on the electrodynamic coupling of fluorescent dye molecules (oscillating electric dipoles) to a tunable planar metallic nanocavity. Fast rotational diffusion of the molecules leads to a rapidly fluctuating mode density of the electromagnetic field along the molecules' dipole axis, which significantly changes their coupling to the field as compared to the opposite limit of fixed dipole orientation. We derive a theoretical treatment of the problem and present experimental results for rhodamine 6G molecules in cavities filled with low and high viscosity liquids. The derived theory and presented experimental method is a powerful tool for determining absolute quantum yield values of fluorescence.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Physical Review Letter
