Социально-политические преобразования в Российской империи после событий октября 1917 года кардинальным способом изменили систему государственно-церковных отношений. К власти пришло атеистическое правительство, объявившее беспощадную войну религии и церкви. Главным объектом антирелигиозной деятельности большевиков стала Русская православная церковь (РПЦ). Содержание антицерковных мероприятий не всегда соответствовало задачам советского строительства. Государственная конфессиональная политика носила в указанный период откровенно репрессивный характер, зачастую не согласовывалась с выдвигаемыми партией и правительством лозунгами
