International Marine Environment Law: A Case Study in the Wider Caribbean Region

    Get PDF
Abstract: This study examines the effectiveness of international marine environment law in controlling and abating contamination of the marine environment in the Wider Caribbean Region. The main international agreement covering the region is the Cartagena Convention which came into force in 1983. This convention, initiated by the UNEP under its Regional Seas Program, is considered one of the most successful of the programs. The study examines that claim in light of events since the adoption of the Cartagena Convention by the majority of nations bordering on the region. Mexico, because of its stature as a leading Latin American nation, is used as a case study. The author concludes that the success of the program is questionable and makes various suggestions for improving the situation

Shaping of molecular weight distribution by iterative learning probability density function control strategies

    Get PDF
A mathematical model is developed for the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of free-radical styrene polymerization in a simulated semi-batch reactor system. The generation function technique and moment method are employed to establish the MWD model in the form of Schultz-Zimmdistribution. Both static and dynamic models are described in detail. In order to achieve the closed-loop MWD shaping by output probability density function (PDF) control, the dynamic MWD model is further developed by a linear B-spline approximation. Based on the general form of the B-spline MWD model, iterative learning PDF control strategies have been investigated in order to improve the MWD control performance. Discussions on the simulation studies show the advantages and limitations of the methodology

Online Food Retailing: Is Market Segmentation The Key To Success?

    Get PDF
The online grocery business was one of many e-commerce opportunities from the late 1990s that was full of promise and resulted in disappointment. Based on a review of current literature and telephone surveys with managers from a number of the top 10 retail grocers in the United States, the importance of market segmentation emerges. Technology is less of an issue than several years ago. The reality of the online grocery business as a niche market has sunk in.  Enormous data warehouses with customer data are now ready to be analyzed. Market segmentation is now both possible and critical for the near future to identify how to define and implement a profitable online grocery presence

The Araucaria Project. Infrared TRGB distances to the Carina and Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxies

We present distance determinations for two Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies, Carina and Fornax, based on the near-infrared magnitudes of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). For Carina we derive true distance moduli of 20.09 and 20.13 mag in the J and K bands, respectively, while for Fornax the same distance modulus of 20.84 mag was derived in both filters. The statistical errors of these determinations are of order 0.03-0.04 mag, whereas the systematic uncertainties on the distances are 0.12 mag in the J band and 0.14 mag in the K band. The distances obtained from the near-infrared TRGB method in this paper agree very well with those obtained for these two galaxies from optical calibrations of the TRGB method, their horizontal branches, RR Lyrae variables, and the near-infrared magnitudes of their red clumps.Comment: Accepted to be published on A
