Circumventing Authority: Loopholes in the DMCA’s Access Controls
In a world where digital pirates freely roam the internet, seemingly plundering at will, the providers of digital content must find a way to protect their valuable assets. Digital fences afford that protection--but not very well. Fortunately (for content owners), 17 U.S.C. §1201, passed as part of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998, was designed to fill the numerous gaps in those fences by forbidding activities designed to circumvent them. In its present state, however, §1201 does not adequately serve that purpose. Substantial flaws in the language of the statute render it virtually powerless to thwart piracy. If §1201 is to fulfill its intended role (without the need for creative judicial interpretation), it must be amended to rectify the discrepancies between Congress’ supposed intent and the language it chose

Resonant Raman scattering in mercurate single crystals
We report resonant electronic Raman scattering in optimally doped single
layer HgBaCuO (Hg-1201) and trilayer
HgBaCaCuO (Hg-1223) single crystals. Analysis of the
and B channels in the superconducting state of Hg-1201
advocates for a gap having d-wave symmetry. In addition a resonant study
pair-breaking peak and the peak suggests that the
peak is not directly related to the d-wave superconducting gap amplitude.
Comparison with trilayer Hg-1223 demonstrates the universal behavior of this

Manassas: On The Road Again
A few months ago I took a quick jaunt to Carlisle to see the Pennsylvania Civil War Sesquicentennial roadshow. I was heartily impressed with the quality of interpretation and exhibit design. For a rolling exhibit which needs to fold in upon itself, it was very rich and powerful. Jared Frederick, proprietor of History Matters had a nice roundup of what that exhibit comprises
[Review of] Hoerder, Dirk. Cultures in Contact: World Migrations in the Second Millennium
Cultures in Contact is an ambitious tome of the annotated world history of human mass migrations both within and between national boundaries. This book provides a glorious descriptive wealth of when, where, and to a lesser extent why mass migrations have occurred across the largest and most populous regions of the planet earth over the span of the past millennium. In this regard it may serve as a valued reference work for anyone curious about the bigger picture of migration flows; however, those seeking a simplistic theoretical synthesis that would account for the myriad patterns of human migrations over the past millennium will not be much gratified by Hoerder\u27s tome. As the author highlights in his introductory chapter, human migration flows may be either voluntary or coerced and in either case must be viewed in a socio-historically specific systems context
