Advice from the Field: Youth Employment Programs and Unintended Pregnancy

    Get PDF
This report further explores the connection between the fields of pregnancy prevention and youth employment. It provides "advice from the field" from five youth employment providers about their efforts to combat unintended pregnancy and to provide family planning services. In addition, it includes interviews with two experts in the youth employment and teen pregnancy prevention fields, who provide advice and essential information for practitioners. This report is intended to provide "how-to's" for staff in the youth employment field who wish to more innovatively integrate reproductive health education and unintended pregnancy prevention services into their programs

A review of described Metacyrba, the status of Parkella, and notes on Platycryptus and Balmaceda : with a comparison of the genera (Araneae: Salticidae: Marpissinae)

Parkella Chickering 1946 = Metacyrba F. O. P.-Cambridge 1901, n. syn.; Parkella venusta Chickering 1946 = Metacyrba venusta (Chickering 1946), n. comb.; Parkella fusca Chickering 1946 and Dendryphantes franganilloi Caporiacco 1955 = Metacyrba venusta (Chickering 1946), n. syn. The six valid described species of Metacyrba are diagnosed and re-illustrated to show previously unrecognized genitalic differences. Metacyrba similis Banks 1904 is resurrected as a subspecies, becoming Metacyrba taeniola similis Banks 1904, n. status. The female of Metacyrba pictipes Banks 1903 is described for the first time. Metacyrba arizonensis Barnes 1958 = Platycryptus arizonensis (Barnes 1958), n. comb., and Marpissa magna (Peckham & Peckham 1894) = Platycryptus magnus (Peckham & Peckham 1894), n. comb. Platycryptus broadwayi (Peckham & Peckham 1894) = Platycryptus magnus (Peckham & Peckham 1894), n. syn. [lectotypes and paralectotypes are designated for both names]. Metacyrba nigrosecta (Mello-Leitão 1945) = Balmaceda nigrosecta Mello-Leitão 1945, comb. restored. The genera Balmaceda Peckham & Peckham 1894, Metacyrba, and Platycryptus Hill 1979 are compared morphologically among themselves and to Breda Peckham & Peckham 1894 and Fuentes Peckham & Peckham 1894. The distributions of Balmaceda picta Peckham & Peckham 1894 and Metacyrba species are updated. Marpissa melanura F.O.P.-Cambridge 1901 is resurrected; it is not a synonym of Marpissa minor F.O.P.-Cambridge 1901 nor Platycryptus californicus (Peckham & Peckham 1888)

Solid phase recrystallization of ZnS thin films on sapphire

High quality ZnS thin films are important for light emitting diodes based on ZnS, which is a very efficient phosphor. To improve as grown, molecular beam epitaxial, (111)-oriented cubic ZnS films, where defects were introduced due to the large mismatch between ZnS and a sapphire substrate (~ 20%), the ZnS was recrystallized by annealing at temperatures in the 825–1000 °C range, and sulfur pressures of 10 atm. The films have been structurally characterized by high-resolution x-ray diffraction, and electron diffraction by electron channeling patterns. Structural properties of the films annealed at temperatures above 900° have improved significantly. Tilting in the recrystallized films has been reduced more than tenfold, with the recrystallized grains being defect-free. Most films were recrystallized in the as-grown, cubic form, as shown by electron channeling patterns. The surfaces of the films have been inspected with scanning electron microscope, and on most samples they have been found to remain smooth, although on some of the films annealed at elevated temperatures we have observed hexagonal pits. The role of sulfur gas overpressure in the recrystallization has been discussed, and possible effects on film evaporation, grain boundary migration and compliancy of sapphire substrate have been analyzed

Exploring the scope of DBU-promoted amidations of 7-carboxymethyl-pterin

Pteridines are an important heterocycle often used in the development of pharmaceutically relevant compounds, and in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Their synthetic use is often hampered by the notorious insolubility of pterins, slowing the development of novel pteridine derivatives. Reactions which expedite the rapid development of new pterins are thus of great importance. Through a dual role of diazabicycloundecene (DBU), 7-carboxymethyl-pterin is converted to the soluble DBU salt, with additional DBU promoting an ester-to-amide transformation. We have explored this reaction to assess its scope and identify structural features in the amines which significantly affect success, monitored the reaction using pseudo-first order kinetics, and further adapted the reaction conditions to allow for product formation in as little as 5 min, with yields often \u3e80%

Analysis of existing effectiveness and method to enhance the lightning, shielding and earthing protection schemes applied on the Parit Raja’s Telecommunication Tower System

Lightning, one of nature’s most destructive forces, continues to wreck havoc on lives and property especially in today’s electronic environment. It has been shown by field experiences that telecommunication towers are one of the preferential points for direct lightning strike. This is mainly connected with the specific features of their construction where the presence of high telecommunication towers and their topographical location mostly at an open area or at hills. The potential of lightning strike toward communication tower is high. A telecommunication tower located at Parit Raja town was chosen as a case study. The location of the tower is good to channel the coverage toward the community. Unfortunately this tower is very vulnerable to lightning strike and can giving impact to the surrounding buildings located nearby the tower itself such as mosque, petrol pump, post office and the Bank Simpanan National (BSN) bank. This thesis presents work that look at the current protection scheme against the lightning strike and the effect on a telecommunication tower system and the surrounding. Analysis study had been made towards existing protection component or system and their effectiveness in mitigating the lightning strike impact on the Parit Raja tower system. The investigation of the lightning protection system used by the communication tower is sufficient enough to direct the overload voltages of a lightning strike. Also, the analysis on the existing grounding earthing system is able to accommodate and dissipate the surge current to the earth. The method such as rolling sphere and cone protection had been used to identify the safety area on the site due to direct strike. Some suggestions to enhance the tower system protection such as installation external ground bus bar, radial system, and new installation for connection of coaxial cable and underground cable. Overall from this project, the weaknesses of system protection were identified in the tower Parit Raja and the proposal as improvement for the protection scheme in the future

It is my honor and privilege this evening to present the Emily Russel Award to one of the finest Christian Librarians it has been our collective privilege to know. For me, it is even more; it is sheer joy to give tribute to a woman who has during our longstanding professional relationship been a source of inspiration, a model of integrity, and a continuing influence. Probably all of us in this room can list only a few people besides family members who have made a major impact on us. I would list this lady\u27s name
