The article describes the process of creation of lingo-cultural reference book “Christianity and Paganism in proverbs, phraseological units, riddles, signs of the Russians”. Purpose. The article is devoted to the research of expression markers in the original and translation texts of popular scientific literature. The subject of analysis is lexical and grammatical constructions of a popular scientific text. The authors aim to identify and compare the original and translation texts of constructions the expressive potential of which helps to actualize the cognitive function of scientific information.Methodology. The research is based on the following methods: the comparative analysis, theoretical analysis of literary sources, generalization and systematization. The researchers establish similarities and differences in the original and translation texts of expressive constructions using Welcome to the Universe by N.D. Tyson as an example of a popular scientific book.Results. On the basis of the analysis performed, it was established that the translator adapts the text to the norms and culture of the target language while complying with the scientific style’s structure and showing creative abilities. The expressive potential of the text may be found in many grammatical constructions, language means, humor, off tops and other stylistic peculiarities which are examined in the article.Practical implications. The results may be applied in the special courses and lectures of the translation theory, as well as in the translation process itself, since the structure of the popular scientific texts may include variable elements.Цель. Статья посвящена исследованию маркеров экспрессивности текстов оригинала и перевода научно-популярной литературы. Предметом исследования выступают лексико-грамматические конструкции научно-популярного текста. Авторы ставят целью выявить и сопоставить тексты оригинала и перевода конструкций, чей экспрессивный потенциал помогает реализовывать когнитивную функцию научной информации.Метод или методология проведения работы. Основу исследования образуют следующие методы: сравнительно-сопоставительный анализ, теоретический анализ литературных источников, обобщение и систематизация. На примере научно-популярной книги «Большое космическое путешествие» Н.Д. Тайсона исследователями устанавливаются сходства и различия экспрессивных конструкций в оригинале и в переводе.Результаты. На основе проведённого анализа установлено, что переводчик адаптирует текст перевода под нормы и культуру переводящего языка, при этом соблюдая структуру научного стиля и проявляя творческие способности. Экспрессивный потенциал текста может выражаться в массе грамматических конструкций, языковых средств, в юморе, отступлениях от темы и прочих стилистических особенностях, которые исследуются в работе.Область применения результатов. Результаты могут быть применены в курсах и лекциях по теории перевода, а также в самом процессе переводческой деятельности, поскольку структура текстов научно-популярного стиля не исключает элементы вариативности

The Effects of Institutional Transformations on the Russian Doctoral Education Performance

Currently, enhancement of doctoral education performance is becoming one of the central tasks for state policy in the field of science and education. In 2013–2015 Russian doctoral education experienced radical transformations aimed to increase the performance of doctoral programs and enhance the quality of dissertations. First, doctoral education moved towards the structured (educational) model. Second, norms and rules of the work of dissertation boards changed significantly. The purpose of this study is to explore how these reforms affected the performance of doctoral education. The empirical base for the study comprises the data on dissertations defense of graduates of 2018 at 12 Russian universities (N=1022), which were collected by the authors using the web scraping technique. The main findings obtained from the analysis of these data are threefold. First, time-to-degree has increased with most of the dissertations now being defended only after the completion of the programs. Second, in social sciences, this delay of defense has intensified abnormally (80% of dissertation in this field are defended after the program completion). Third, the actual performance, i.e., one that takes into account dissertations defended after the program completion, has decreased significantly in social sciences and humanities. These results show that the traditional practice to evaluate performance based on the proportion of graduates who defend their dissertations during the normative period of time does not reflect the reality. To made adequate managerial decisions regarding doctoral education, it is necessary to arrange the monitoring of dynamics of dissertations that are defended after the program completion both on institution and state levels
