Hadron Spectroscopy with Dynamical Chirally Improved Fermions
We simulate two dynamical, mass degenerate light quarks on 16^3x32 lattices
with a spatial extent of 2.4 fm using the Chirally Improved Dirac operator. The
simulation method, the implementation of the action and signals of
equilibration are discussed in detail. Based on the eigenvalues of the Dirac
operator we discuss some qualitative features of our approach. Results for
ground state masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons as well as for the
nucleon and delta baryons are presented.Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, 10 table
Condensation Coefficient Measurement for Water in the UMR Cloud Simulation Chamber
A systematic series of condensation coefficient measurements of water have been made using the University of Missouri-Rolla cooled-wall expansion chamber which simulates the thermodynamics of cloud. This coefficient is seen to decrease from a value near unity, at the outset of simulation, to a value in the neighborhood of 0.01 toward the end of a simulation. Final values of this coefficient are sufficiently low as to contribute significantly to the broadening of the drop-size distribution in cloud
Measurement of the Condensation Coefficient of Water in the UMR Cloud Simulation Chamber
Measurements of the condensation coefficient of water under conditions closely approximating those in natural atmospheric cloud have been made in the cooled-wall UMR cloud simulation chamber. Current measurements disclose a value of condensation coefficient near unity at the outset of the experiment, generally decreasing to lower values (~ .01) as the experiment progresses. The significance of the magnitude of condensation coefficient in atmospheric cloud is briefly discussed
Measurement of the Condensation Coefficient of Water in the UMR Simulation Chamber
The UMR Cloud Simulation Facility is described. The facility is designed to provide a controlled environment simulating the conditions of natural atmospheric processes. It consists of two cooled-wall expansion cloud chambers and peripheral instrumentation for generation and characterization of aerosols used for cloud formation studies. Results of initial studies of the growth of warm cloud droplets and inferred measurements of the condensation coefficient are described
Assessment of multispectral and hyperspectral imaging systems for digitisation of a Russian icon
In a study of multispectral and hyperspectral reflectance imaging, a Round Robin Test assessed the performance of different systems for the spectral digitisation of artworks. A Russian icon, mass-produced in Moscow in 1899, was digitised by ten institutions around Europe. The image quality was assessed by observers, and the reflectance spectra at selected points were reconstructed to characterise the icon’s colourants and to obtain a quantitative estimate of accuracy. The differing spatial resolutions of the systems affected their ability to resolve fine details in the printed pattern. There was a surprisingly wide variation in the quality of imagery, caused by unwanted reflections from both glossy painted and metallic gold areas of the icon’s surface. Specular reflection also degraded the accuracy of the reconstructed reflectance spectrum in some places, indicating the importance of control over the illumination geometry. Some devices that gave excellent results for matte colour charts proved to have poor performance for this demanding test object. There is a need for adoption of standards for digitising cultural heritage objects to achieve greater consistency of system performance and image quality. This article arose out of a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) conducted by Tatiana Vitorino when visiting University College London during a 2-week period in late October 2015. The research was carried out under the auspices of the European COST Action TD1201 Colour and Space in Cultural Heritage (COSCH). The project website is at http://www.cosch.info. Under the COST rules, TV received funding for travel and accommodation expenses, and all coauthors were able to claim travel expenses to attend the subsequent COSCH project meeting. No other funding was received from COSCH for labour or equipment and all work was done on a voluntary pro bono basis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Charged, conformal non-relativistic hydrodynamics
We embed a holographic model of an U(1) charged fluid with Galilean
invariance in string theory and calculate its specific heat capacity and
Prandtl number. Such theories are generated by a R-symmetry twist along a null
direction of a N=1 superconformal theory. We study the hydrodynamic properties
of such systems employing ideas from the fluid-gravity correspondence.Comment: 31 pages, 1 figure, JHEP3 style, refs added, typos corrected, missing

Thrombospondin-2 and LDH Are Putative Predictive Biomarkers for Treatment with Everolimus in Second-Line Metastatic Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (MARC-2 Study)
There is an unmet need for predictive biomarkers in metastatic renal cell carcinoma
(mRCC) therapy. The phase IV MARC-2 trial searched for predictive blood biomarkers in patients
with predominant clear cell mRCC who benefit from second-line treatment with everolimus. In
an exploratory approach, potential biomarkers were assessed employing proteomics, ELISA, and
polymorphism analyses. Lower levels of angiogenesis-related protein thrombospondin-2 (TSP-2) at
baseline (≤665 parts per billion, ppb) identified therapy responders with longer median progressionfree survival (PFS; ≤665 ppb at baseline: 6.9 months vs. 1.8, p = 0.005). Responders had higher
lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in serum two weeks after therapy initiation (>27.14 nmol/L),
associated with a longer median PFS (3.8 months vs. 2.2, p = 0.013) and improved overall survival
(OS; 31.0 months vs. 14.0 months, p < 0.001). Baseline TSP-2 levels had a stronger relation to PFS
(HR 0.36, p = 0.008) than baseline patient parameters, including IMDC score. Increased serum LDH
levels two weeks after therapy initiation were the best predictor for OS (HR 0.21, p < 0.001). mTOR
polymorphisms appeared to be associated with therapy response but were not significant. Hence, we
identified TSP-2 and LDH as promising predictive biomarkers for therapy response on everolimus
after failure of one VEGF-targeted therapy in patients with clear cell mRCC
Topological and geometrical restrictions, free-boundary problems and self-gravitating fluids
Let (P1) be certain elliptic free-boundary problem on a Riemannian manifold
(M,g). In this paper we study the restrictions on the topology and geometry of
the fibres (the level sets) of the solutions f to (P1). We give a technique
based on certain remarkable property of the fibres (the analytic representation
property) for going from the initial PDE to a global analytical
characterization of the fibres (the equilibrium partition condition). We study
this analytical characterization and obtain several topological and geometrical
properties that the fibres of the solutions must possess, depending on the
topology of M and the metric tensor g. We apply these results to the classical
problem in physics of classifying the equilibrium shapes of both Newtonian and
relativistic static self-gravitating fluids. We also suggest a relationship
with the isometries of a Riemannian manifold.Comment: 36 pages. In this new version the analytic representation hypothesis
is proved. Please address all correspondence to D. Peralta-Sala
Discovery of (R)-2-Amino-6-borono-2-(2-(piperidin-1-yl)ethyl)hexanoic Acid and Congeners As Highly Potent Inhibitors of Human Arginases I and II for Treatment of Myocardial Reperfusion Injury
Recent efforts to identify treatments for myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury have resulted in the discovery of a novel series of highly potent α,α-disubstituted amino acid-based arginase inhibitors. The lead candidate, (R)-2-amino-6-borono-2-(2-(piperidin-1-yl)ethyl)hexanoic acid, compound 9, inhibits human arginases I and II with IC50s of 223 and 509 nM, respectively, and is active in a recombinant cellular assay overexpressing human arginase I (CHO cells). It is 28% orally bioavailable and significantly reduces the infarct size in a rat model of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. Herein, we report the design, synthesis, and structure−activity relationships (SAR) for this novel series of inhibitors along with pharmacokinetic and in vivo efficacy data for compound 9 and X-ray crystallography data for selected lead compounds cocrystallized with arginases I and II.Fil: Van Zandt, Michael C..
