“Un tumor en la memoria”: una exploración del lugar de la memoria en la filosofía de E. Levinas

Abstract

What place can memory have in a philosophy predominantly marked by a notion such as the immemorial? This question guides the present article on the thought of Emmanuel Levinas. Starting from the recognition of the central importance of memory in philosophies that emerged in response to the barbarism of the twentieth century, I confront the necessity of memory with the Levinasian description of subjectivity as immemorial. In dialogue with other interpretations (Mate, Sucasas), I offer a reading of the problem that attends both to its philosophical stakes and to its Jewish significance, without thereby separating the two in any essential way. My interpretive proposal consists precisely in indicating that there is something more than ethics and politics as regions of meaning in Levinas: namely, the sphere of the Jewish. Against the letter, but in keeping with the spirit of the French philosopher, I propose an interpretive possibility for rehabilitating a memory after mourning, evil, and trauma.¿Qué lugar puede tener la memoria en una filosofía predominantemente marcada por una noción como lo inmemorial? Esta pregunta guía este artículo de interpretación del pensamiento de Emmanuel Levinas. A partir de la constatación del hecho de la importancia central de la memoria en las filosofías que surgieron al calor de la barbarie del siglo XX, confronto la necesidad de la memoria con la descripción subjetiva de lo inmemorial levinasiano. En diálogo con otras interpretaciones (Mate, Sucasas), ofrezco una lectura del problema que atiende tanto a su problemática filosófica como a su importancia judía, sin que ello signifique separarlas esencialmente. Mi propuesta interpretativa pasa precisamente por indicar que hay algo más que ética y política como regiones de sentido en Levinas: es la esfera de lo judío. Contra la letra, pero siguiendo el espíritu del filósofo francés, ofrezco una posibilidad interpretativa para rehabilitar una memoria tras el duelo, el mal, el trauma
