The influence of macbeth in Hayrullah Efendi’s Hikâye-i İbrahim Paşa be-İbrahim-i Gülşenî Play

Abstract

Hikâye-i İbrahim Paşa be-İbrahim-i Gülşenî, Abdülhak Hâmid Tarhan’ın babası Hayrullah Efendi’nin 1844’te yazdığı tahmin edilen tiyatro eseridir. Bu eser, Türk tiyatrosunun Batılı tarzdaki ilk eseri kabul edilen Şinasi’nin Şair Evlenmesi’nden önce yazılmış olmasına rağmen Hayrullah Efendi hayattayken yayımlanmadığı için Cumhuriyet dönemine kadar edebiyat camiası bu eserden haberdar olmamıştır. Uzun süre yayımlanmaması sebebiyle Türk tiyatrosunun gelişimine doğrudan etkisi de olmayan piyes, buna rağmen Türk tiyatrosunun Batılı tarzdaki ilk denemelerinden biri olması sebebiyle dikkat çekmektedir. İlk piyes denemelerinden biri olmasının yanında eserde görülen Shakespeare ve Macbeth etkisi de piyesin ilgi çekici yönlerinden biridir. Çalışmamızda bu doğrultuda Hikâye-i İbrahim Paşa be-İbrahim-i Gülşenî’yi piyesteki Macbeth etkisi doğrultusunda inceleyeceğiz. Bu şekilde Shakespeare’in Batılı tarzdaki Türk tiyatrosunun oluşumu üzerindeki etkisi hakkında yapılan çalışmalara da katkıda bulunmayı amaçlamaktayız.Hikâye-i İbrahim Paşa be-İbrahim-i Gülşenî is a theatrical work estimated to have been written in 1844 by Hayrullah Efendi, the father of Abdülhak Hâmid Tarhan. Although this work predates Şinasi’s Şair Evlenmesi, which is widely regarded as the first Western-style play in Turkish theatre, the literary community remained unaware of its existence until the Republican era, as it was not published during Hayrullah Efendi’s lifetime. Due to its prolonged unpublished status, the play did not exert a direct influence on the development of Turkish theatre. Nevertheless, it commands attention as one of the early Western-style theatrical attempts in the Turkish tradition. In addition to being one of the initial dramatic endeavours, the discernible influence of Shakespeare and Macbeth constitutes another intriguing aspect of the play. In this study, we shall accordingly analyze Hikâye-i İbrahim Paşa be-İbrahim-i Gülşenî through the lens of the Macbeth influence apparent within the piece. Our objective is thereby to contribute to existing scholarship concerning Shakespeare’s impact on the formation of Western-style Turkish theatre
