Feminidad y poder en Fortunata y Jacinta de Benito Pérez Galdós

Abstract

This article examines Fortunata y Jacinta from an interdisciplinary perspective, analyzing the discursive strategies through which Galdós represents femininity. Within this framework, the novel illustrates how, in nineteenth-century Spain, female identity is shaped by patriarchal norms, embodied in female characters who enact the tensions and contradictions inherent to that identity. The study thus provides a reflection on the intersections of gender and power, underscoring the relevance of debates on the representation of women in classical Spanish literature, while highlighting the capacity of Galdós’s work to engage with contemporary critical approaches. In addition, the analysis draws on narratological and feminist theoretical tools to explore how focalization, narrative voice, and the configuration of affective and familial relationships reveal the persistence of structures of domination that organize both the diegetic universe and the broader social imaginary reproduced by the novel. Through a close examination of Fortunata and Jacinta, the article demonstrates how both characters embody distinct modes of female subjectivation that oscillate between the internalization of bourgeois mandates and the pursuit of individual affirmation, thereby allowing the novel to be reread as a space in which tensions between masculine authority, desire, motherhood, and female agency are staged. In this way, the study not only revisits Galdós’s narrative from an updated critical standpoint, but also contributes to expanding scholarly discussions on the literary construction of gender within Spanish realism.El presente artículo aborda Fortunata y Jacinta desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria, en la que se examinan las formas discursivas mediante las cuales Galdós representa la feminidad. En este marco, la novela hace patente cómo, en la España decimonónica, la identidad femenina se encuentra mediada por normas patriarcales articuladas a través de personajes femeninos que ponen en acto contradicciones identitarias. Así, el estudio propone una reflexión sobre las interrelaciones entre género y poder, subrayando la vigencia del debate en torno a las representaciones de la mujer en la narrativa española clásica, al tiempo que resalta la capacidad de la obra galdosiana para dialogar con enfoques críticos contemporáneos. Asimismo, el análisis se apoya en herramientas provenientes de la narratología y de la teoría feminista para indagar cómo la focalización, la distribución de la voz narrativa y la configuración de las relaciones afectivas y familiares revelan la persistencia de estructuras de dominación que organizan tanto el universo diegético como el imaginario social que la novela reproduce. A través del examen de las figuras de Fortunata y Jacinta, se muestra cómo ambas encarnan modalidades diferenciadas de subjetivación femenina que oscilan entre la interiorización de los mandatos burgueses y la búsqueda de afirmación individual, lo que permite releer la obra como un espacio donde se escenifican las tensiones entre autoridad masculina, deseo, maternidad y agencia femenina. De este modo, el artículo no sólo revisita la narrativa galdosiana desde una perspectiva actualizada, sino que también contribuye a ampliar la discusión crítica sobre la construcción literaria del género en el realismo español
