Epidemiological characterization of HIV cases reported in the municipality of Ibagué – Tolima, during the years 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, based on secondary institutional sources

Abstract

El VIH continúa siendo un problema de salud pública por su alta transmisibilidad, impacto en poblaciones jóvenes y costo para el sistema de salud. Este estudio descriptivo y transversal en Ibagué analiza 355 casos confirmados de VIH entre 2024 y el primer trimestre de 2025, identificándose un predominio en hombres (77%), especialmente entre los 30 y 39 años, y en zonas urbanas. La vía principal de contagio fue el contacto sexual sin protección (81%), destacando un aumento en hombres homosexuales. Se evidenció una reducción del 37% en los casos del primer trimestre de 2025 respecto al mismo periodo de 2024. Hubo 7 muertes asociadas y comorbilidades frecuentes como ITS, tuberculosis y hepatitis B y C. Se concluye que persisten barreras en diagnóstico temprano y estigma, por lo que se recomienda fortalecer la prevención, diagnóstico oportuno y atención integral en poblaciones clave.HIV continues to be a public health problem due to its high transmissibility, impact on young populations, and cost to the healthcare system. The main route of transmission was unprotected sexual contact (81%), with a notable increase in homosexual men. A 37% reduction in cases was evident in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. There were 7 associated deaths and common comorbidities such as STIs, tuberculosis, and hepatitis B and C.
