As cores da festividade de São Sebastião em Cachoeira do Arari: elementos africanos no arquipélago do Marajó-Pará

Abstract

The São Sebastião Festival is one of the main festivals in the Marajó archipelago.Characterized by religious syncretism and characteristics of popular Catholicism so commonin the Amazon region, this festival mobilizes the population of Marajó cities and people whohave migrated to other municipalities in the state of Pará. During the events that comprise it,one can notice the predominance of colors that refer to the cult of Oxossi, an orixá present inAfrican-based religions. From an anthropological perspective, we investigated the possibilitiesof explanations for the uses of specific colors and verified that controversies are present in thespeeches of different social groups in Cachoeira do Arari, the municipality where the main SãoSebastião festival takes place, in Marajó. Presenting the different stages of this festival, it isclear that popular Catholicism brings together elements of different traditions, including thosewith African ancestry.A Festividade de São Sebastião é uma das principais festas do arquipélago do Marajó.Caracterizada pelo sincretismo religioso e por características do catolicismo popular tãocomum na região amazônica, esta festividade mobiliza a população das cidades marajoarase das pessoas que migraram para outros municípios do estado do Pará. Durante os eventosque a compõem, nota-se o predomínio de cores que remetem ao culto a Oxossi, orixápresente nas religiosidades de matríz africana. Sob a perspectiva antropológica, investigamosas possibilidades de explicações para os usos de cores específicas e verificamos que ascontrovérsias estão presentes nas falas de diferentes grupos sociais de Cachoeira do Arari,município onde ocorre a principal festividade de São Sebastião, no Marajó. Apresentando asdiferentes etapas desta festividade, evidencia-se que o catolicismo popular agrega oselementos de diferentes tradições, incluindo aquelas com ancestralidade africana
